Ty Rodgers to take redshirt year

It's still 5 to play 4 I think. I don't think this really maximizes pay the way some believe. Right now he has to sell someone that his shot is improved without game stats to back it up. That team has to bring him in knowing that if he backs up an improved shot with actual performance, he may dash off again. So his next NIL contract may not be so hot.
Right but the current rules encourages you to decide to redshirt the day before the season starts your senior year so you can get paid twice for your senior season. It’s not an ideal design.

Not surprised in the slightest. I had repeatedly said I don't see where he gets minutes and he certainly couldn't start. For some reason people thought being a returner from last year meant something?

Of course I don't think Ty will be with the team after this season. There are still ways for him to be involved with the team this year (heck Sencire even picked up a technical foul while redshirting). However, I am tired of people calling a player selfish when they are making a move in their best interest. It seems like his game did not fit in this year, and that is fine. It is simply premature to lash out at a player who has represented the program well as "selfish" and a "quitter".
Agree to disagree. It’s selfish to do it the day the season starts. If he did it a month ago after realizing in practice then more power to him

And then this song floats through my mindless mind -
West Virginia, mountain mama,
Take Ty home,
country road,
Chester take Ty home,
country road,

etc...

Ty is good enough to play on this team.

We are a top 30 team not a top 10 team. We got our doors blown off by a team picked in the middle of the SEC. And this team desperately needs his defense and toughness.

Did Sencire for sure get NIL last year? A friend is asking and I thought he did but not certain.

He’s gonna sit out … Collect his NIL … And leave …
Ty knows where he is in the hierarchy of talent on the team. If he thought he could play his way into the starting lineup or starter's minutes, if he was not already there, I think he would stay. If he had improved his offense, I think he would stay and play to improve his value, but he is standing pat on where he ended last year and is likely going to be evaluated as such by other teams. So, I take this as a positive for the prospects for this team (and especially for Morez who brings a lot of the same intensity as Ty), and as a negative for his offseason development.
It is what it is, but I will hate to see him leave. Until your post, I thought there might be a chance of him staying, but I realize that unless BU strikes out in the portal next year, he would likely find himself in the same place.

By the end of the year this could easily be a top 10 team with the talent. And that is because of other guys reaching their ceilings, not Ty being unplayable against most good teams because he’s too slow on D against smaller guards and catch shoot

I understand what you’re saying. If the measure is: dribble, pass, and shoot he ain’t in the top 7. However, his: DEFENSE, versatility, REBOUNDING and program familiarity could have & should have counted for something…

I sorta thought a 6th man would have been about right. But no one seems to wanna make…even a small sacrifice like that these days…I guess?

As for the reason people thought being a returning starter on an elite team might of meant something…I submit this:

I’ll wager we aren’t a top 10 team at the end of the year if you want. You are drastically over estimating this team. Is it possible? Yes. Is it likely? No.

The two are not mutually exclusive. It is a selfish act to do to your team, both in the timing of it and the non-fulfillment of the implied contract. People can reply all they want that that is not how NIL is structured but everyone knows the expectations. Even with blinders on no one would agree to a marketing contract with a redshirt player.

Is it in his best interest? And technically legal? Yes. Neither of those facts render this a non-selfish act.

This is the kind of 💩 that is going to start to tick off big donors …

Why should they pay for a kid to sit out and not play and have both feet out the door ???
Can he still collect NIL if he is academically ineligible come January? If so, maybe it's time for his academic support to get a lot less supportive and for his classes get a LOT tougher.

It's time to retire the "every day guys" moniker for a number of reasons, but this is the nail in the coffin.
Respectfully disagree...I understand...let's see how our season goes...I would have a better feel by then...
