Ty Rodgers to take redshirt year

#201
I could see Ty wanting to maximize his NIL, but is he really going to make a lot more money with the redshirt?

2 years of Illinois NIL
Vs.
1 year of Illinois NIL and two years at another program where he might not make as much?

I like Ty but his offensive game is so limited. He can’t shoot. He doesn’t pass particularly well. He doesn’t handle particularly well. Will other programs be beating down his door trying to get him signed?
He's still getting paid for this yea and gets an extra year so yeah he will make way more money.

Honestly NIL inflation has been kind of crazy and we're seeing average power conference starters probably making as much or more than Shannon did last year(definitely more than he did two years ago). Coleman supposedly got 2 mil and the new top recruits supposedly have way higher asking prices.

Maybe that 2 million that Coleman got will be the average haul for a power conference guy in 2 years.

Underwood’s job is to win ballgames. It’s become abundantly clear his formula is putting offensively talented firepower on the floor. It’s working.
It worked for one year in this new NIL portal era. Let's maintain cautious optimism here. This season could easily turn into a worse version of 2022-2023 as well.

Ty can find better than 10-12 mins per game. Low key annoyed at Underwood for doing this to him. No loyalty at all and over recruiting a program guy. Not a bench player...a program player
Brad did this to him? No loyalty at all?

What do you expect these coaches to do? They're job is to win and it's hard to do that when you don't know if your players are going to be back the next year or not. You have to recruit like nobody will be returning the next year.

It would be nice to start the year with Hawkins, right? Where's he at? Was he loyal? This is the era that we're in. You either adapt or you get fired.

Ty should be required to measure up to those competing for playing time. It doesn't seem as though he measured up well.

Pretty easy to keep a good attitude when you’re getting paid handsomely to sit on the bench. Shoot, it probably takes me 4 or more years of a 9-5 to make what he is being a hype guy and a practice player.
A competitor at the D-1 level doesn't go to a big time program like this one to redshirt and sit a year. This wasn't part of the plan. I'm sure he's not happy with the situation he is in

Recruiting the next Matthew Mayer or Jayden Epps or Skyy Clark won't guarantee success. We have a lot of young guys and unless they are all the most unselfish players of all time, there's going to inevitably and naturally be guys who get frustrated with their eventual roles. Veteran teams are more likely to withstand those frustrations than younger teams are

Michigan State probably will. He would fit well in that program with the pedigree of developing non scorers into all around versatile players

Players are getting paid. This is a job and they should do what is in their best interest to maximize their future. Brad has that same responsibility to the university. It all feels very scummy as it feels like creaning but fans need to rework how they evaluate these decisions now. Will continue to remember Ty fondly for his unwavering commitment while suiting up for the O&B and wish him the best in the future.

Absolutely 100%. Rodgers got Creaned. He got the Crean treatment. Or should I say the BU treatment now. This definitely feels grimey and icky

Honestly, I've always liked Ty, but this is insanity. He knew full well what he signed up for coming back this year. If playing time wasn't what he wanted, that's solely on Ty Rodgers shoulders. If you can't shoot a jump shot in high level college basketball, you're not going to have a significant role on a high level team. We have to get contracts for these NIL deals and we have to do it yesterday.

Irregardless of outcomes this season, it’s here to stay. We are fully embracing modern 2024 basketball with Brad & Tyler at the helm. We shot 42 threes tonight!

Transfer portal closed in late April. Will Riley reclassified and committed in June. Business is business.

Actually, he didn't exactly. The portal closed in April. KJ and Riley came on board after that.

And yes, he knew that the possibility of bringing more talent in was there. BU knew that bringing in new talent might cause this very situation.

He played a significant role on a high level team last year.

I love Ty, but this is flat-out wrong. Underwood's job is to win as much as possible. New season, new team, players have to earn their time. This is how high-level team sports work. Being recruited over is pretty much standard practice. Sink or swim, you're in the deep end.

When recruiting Ty Brad said that he was the best thing since sliced bread. How can a guy be on a college basketball team for 2 1/2 years and still not be able to shoot a little? Purdue exposed him last season, actually saying that they weren't going to guard him. Everyone else thought it was a great idea because it worked.

Brad recruited over him, we hope. He decided that he wants to play, so he is not going to waste this season. He will try to develop a shot, he will work on his body, he will practice hard and be a great teammate. Remember what Hawkins said about Sencire last season regarding practice? Quote-ish "We are trying to get warm, get ready for the next game, Buck is making us look stupid." He was still working his tail off. I would wager that Ty will be no different.

Should Ty hang around to ride the bench as a Junior, or save the year and play here or somewhere else next season?

Also to the guys who want to boot him out. Do you kick a guy off the team for red shirting? Seriously?

Now that college basketball is no longer about scholarships and all about NIL, I don't think the concept of creaning applies anymore. In this situation, a player isn't getting his scholarship yanked, he's yanking an NIL bag away from donors. The power dynamic is totally different here.

Look who the opponent was. Reference my post when they play Alabama and then we can talk
Sure we can talk. There will be games this season where we will say we could have used his rebounding and defense. But on the whole it sure looks like Ty has been over recruited by players that provide shooting. And it sounds like Ty didn’t want to be a role player.

I'm not even necessarily saying it would be a good thing for the team, but I guarantee you Ty Rodgers would have been a core rotation piece.

Brad Underwood himself might disagree if asked at this moment, but I would end up right and he would end up wrong. In the heat of combat Brad is going to end up playing the guys he trusts to guard and run the defense correctly.

That's classic basketball coach stuff. You sit in your office and write down a rotation that you believe can score, then under the lights you actually play a rotation that you know can guard.
I seem to recall a LOT of games last season where Ty was on the bench late.
