Ty Rodgers to take redshirt year

Did Sincere have attitude issues last year? Naw we will be fine.
No, but this seems very abrupt. I guess for some that may not make the NBA, it might make sense to hang around college longer for big NIL if you can get it. Coleman sure took advantage of it.

Is this a joke? Attitude issues? This is Ty Rodgers...not Jayden Epps. Have you not been watching this program for the last 2 yrs? Ty is the epitome of a consumate teammate and everyday guy
Except when he's not guaranteed significant playing time apparently.

There is one guy on this roster that was here ~180 days ago. That was a choice by the staff and specific players. The season could be a total failure or booming success, but it isn't related to the slogan having zero connection to reality.
So why did you connect 1 players decision to tearing it down...

Ty can find better than 10-12 mins per game. Low key annoyed at Underwood for doing this to him. No loyalty at all and over recruiting a program guy. Not a bench player...a program player
Underwood’s job is to win ballgames. It’s become abundantly clear his formula is putting offensively talented firepower on the floor. It’s working.

I think the two questions in terms of anything besides us never seeing Ty take the floor again are

1. Injuries. If Ty becomes a NEED player all the sudden can this be revisited? We shouldn't be too precious about it, there would be a financial component to that conversation.

2. Ty will go to the highest bidder next year. Is there a world where BU is motivated to be the highest bidder? I doubt it, but things may change in unexpected ways.

Again this isn’t anything against Ty…Ty is great, plays hard, has a great attitude. Hell he even had to help Tomi with which way to go after the handshake line in the intros, he had a big smile on his face when that happened
Any chance with a year to improve offensive game he comes back. A full year instead of a summer can go a long way to developing game. I’m sure it’s unlikely but is there any shot?

Yes. Year 2. Really minimizing defense.

I wonder if he feels it's easier to pull off great offense with newcomers than it is to mold them into plus defenders.

Pretty easy to keep a good attitude when you’re getting paid handsomely to sit on the bench. Shoot, it probably takes me 4 or more years of a 9-5 to make what he is being a hype guy and a practice player.

"doing this to him" - BU is going to play the guys that maximize his chances of winning. He's not "doing anything" to Ty.

Furthermore every coach that wants to keep his job is trying to recruit over their current guys.

Getting a 5th year of NIL makes sense, and after watching this game, I understand his decision. There are gonna be games where we need a stop and we won't have his defense, but if he's the 8/9 guy on this team, why waste a year.

IANAL but I imagine if Shohei quit baseball New Balance wouldn't have to pay him as much after that. Not because of retaliation but because the value of his name image and likeness would drop significantly and that would make him a less effective use of resources.

As a wise man once said, "players play players"

We were a top 10 team last season doing exactly that, but sure.
Just curious…but do you not see how last year’s team vs this year’s team are way different and why we needed him last year to play that role, and why this year’s role might be drastically different?

Your argument that we were a top 10 team doing that last year looks good at surface level, but surely you see a difference in the different situations, yes?

I could see Ty wanting to maximize his NIL, but is he really going to make a lot more money with the redshirt?

2 years of Illinois NIL
Vs.
1 year of Illinois NIL and two years at another program where he might not make as much?

I like Ty but his offensive game is so limited. He can’t shoot. He doesn’t pass particularly well. He doesn’t handle particularly well. Will other programs be beating down his door trying to get him signed?

Better stats than Coleman as a sophomore. Coleman developed (and cashed in) over time.

Completely understandable from Ty's perspective but man this feels like a guy punch.

I have no clue what Ty has made in NIL his first two years and will this year but that 5th year could be a very good payout for a guy that doesn't really project as a pro player(lack of jump shot even limits him overseas).

Maybe the 5th year helps him develop more offensively but either way he is maximizing his career earnings and I wouldn't be surprised to see him end up working as asst coach someday.

Pretty sure it's just that Will Riley and others were going to take all his minutes. He didn't want to burn a year of eligibility playing 10 minutes per game. He'll find some place next year where he'll get starter's minutes. Can't blame him.
