Fantasy:

I know it will never happen, but once I really want to see a team sell out with a full court 2 full line system where the other team must earn every point from the foul line or on contested jumpers. No open shots. Use 45 fouls if necessary. Wear the opponent and the refs into submission. This could be that team. Everyone would hate them as they lift the trophies at the end of the season. Glorious!!

Let me get this straight. You want half of our defensive strategy to be: Give the other team the most efficient shot in basketball?

I hate to say this, but maybe we should pump the brakes a little on all the trophies we are going to haul in. It's hard to win it all once (we should know because the Flying Illini were the best team in 1989 and didn't win) let alone more than once. I think we have a potentially very talented team but there are many other teams with just as much talent or more. "With that being said," I am excited about this coming year.

We already been hauling trophies and got 10 toes in on that NATTY!

40 minutes of hell.

Honestly it would be interesting to see how a defense like that could hold up in the modern era. Would you be killed by too many fouls? And could you cover the 3 well enough?

Personally, while I think this team is very deep. I don't know if you could count on it and I also don't know if it would be athletic enough to pull it off.

I think the big key would be the team would need to have multiple very mobile rim protectors to play like that. I don't really think Ivisic would be a good fit. I do think Booth, DGL, and Ty could all play in that system.

While Illinois is talented, IMO they don't have the athletes to play 40 minutes of hell. Pass

I think somebody needs to work on their fantasies a bit...

I like how UCONN and Iowa State play defense. 10X better than most teams.
Dr Tom at Iowa used to press full court. Beat up bad teams but got shreaded by good teams.
Arkansas was successful with 40 minutes of hell.
Kentucky Pitino phase 1 pressed full court and were one first teams that loved the 3 point shot. Pittino did it because early on he did not have talent.

Blue bloods - Duke, Kentucky, UNC, Kansas don't need gimmick defense. Why should Brad do it?

I just don't get why so many posters are coming in with this idea. Don't wanna come across as impolite but isn't it common sense? I don't think it's complicated.

In addition to the fact that one is quite by a long shot the more mature player if you watch them...

Player A is a top 10 player in his current class...Player B is a fringe top 40 player in his current class and maybe not even that...

Player A if he reclasses will most likely still remain a five star...player B if he reclasses will most likely not even remain a top 50 player.

Cmon now...
Lol

My memory is terrible, so I could be way off here. But Etienne committed to UCLA unexpectedly in the midseason and we didnt have a scholarship open and I think the next season was when we started hearing all the “Brad wants to leave one open” talk because you never know when someone might be available. Etienne was never mentioned as why, its just the timeline added up I thought. Again, I could be way off here.

Iowa State and Marquette are probably the two closest to running something like that but its really difficult at the high major level. Eventually you run into teams that are too skilled, too good at shooting, and too disciplined for that style to be effective.

I do tend to agree but I would argue that the Louisville team that won a *title and had another run under Pitino was basically built on being so physical defensively that the refs couldn't call everything(was also how Duke beat Wisconsin in the championship).

I don't think this illinois team is built to do that and I don't think there as athletic as you would want to be to do so, but I would definitely love to watch a team try to recreate the 40 minutes of hell style.

I do see a couple of issues though like you mentioned. First, 3pt shooting is so much better nowadays and high pressure full court d tends to allow more layups and open 3s if it gets beat(high risk, high reward). Second, the Big10 calls so many ticket tack fouls that I don't think you could even necessarily run it during the conference season.

If kids can get into the University, why not reclassify and start getting paid, working with Fletch, playing against future pros… boohoo for their high school but so many transfer away anyway… and Brad doesn’t have to give them one minute of playing time for them to still come out way ahead.
