I've been advocating for some zone with this team. We'll see...

IMO, Booth might be the best matchup for us with Baily. I'd say Ty for Harper.

Tbh, I would just like to see us zone in on those two as much as possible. They quite honestly just don't have the pieces around those two. I like the guy they added from EMU but...I mean...

Derek Simpson is probably their 4th or 5th best player. He'd probably be the 11th guy here at best. Whoever their next best guy is...they probably wouldn't even get a scholarship here.

Not trying to sound too dramatic but...yeah...
Booth is not quick enough laterally to guard Bailey.

One of the things that can make Illinois special this year is the variety of quality starting lineups based on matchups of a given opponent.
For example, I would like to see Tre White and Ty Rodgers both start when we play Rutgers.
Both at 6'7", they provide the best defensive matchup against Baily 6'8" and Harper 6'6".
That is our best option to neutralize their two Freshmen stars as much as possible.
At that point, we beat them at the other three positions as well as the bench.
Next game, new opponent, perhaps a new lineup.
One can say BU has never had a roster like this, but how often has he altered the starting lineup strictly because of opponent? For that matter, how often do other coaches do it? Kind of reminds me of the whole “we could see some hockey-like substitutions because of all the depth we have” comments. I don’t think adjusting starting lineup for different opponents will be something we see much of if at all.

If Illini end up as good as we hope, why change starting lineup? Figure out how to push advantages we have and make opponent adjust to us. Not saying players’ minutes won’t or shouldn’t vary some based on opponent and matchups, but starting lineup? Nah.

Just for context, Ivisic hasn't averaged more than 17mpg in the past 3 seasons in the ABA. While I'm not saying he's incapable of playing more, I really do think him and Morez are going to be almost as pure a platoon for playing time as you'll see with both getting around 18-22mpg depending on foul trouble. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Brad rotate Tomislav and Morez 4-6 minutes on, 4-6 minutes off all game. I also wouldn't be surprised to see Booth get some early season action as both Tomislav and Morez adjust to how the NCAA calls fouls. Also Morez can hit the three decently, though not even close to as well as Tomislav.
I really am intrigued by the short minute rotation idea. Not sure about the chemistry and rhythm on the court. It's a fine line between your guys being fresh and getting in a groove.

This team is so much different than the one Booth signed with. I'm concerned he won't make it past Christmas if Morez is getting more minutes.

In comparison to the X posts of other players, hitting a hook shot with DGL as the nearest defender and hitting a couple of practice 3s seems underwhelming to me.

It could be a lot worse-it could be a video of that Jack Krapalja guy Weber recruited at K-State doing a simple hesitation crossover dribble that a decent fourth grade point guard can make pretty easily!! ;)

I think Booth's minutes will be shared with Ben, with Ben getting more than Booth.

If this goes into affect this year, will it alter our plans?

Feel like this really just opens up the opportunity to gift some good culture walk-on types a scholarship.

It's already currently difficult to use the full 13 scholarships and keep guys happy.

Though maybe you could use an extra spot or two for guys reclassing and redshirting while collecting some NIL. Like basically just bring in your freshman class a year early and let them work out and develop and then enter their typical freshman year more ready to contribute.

I was about to post this same thing, but something else to think about is, what level of talent is going to basically sit a year, even if they are getting paid?

Also, what is a team going to pay a player to just sit there and get no return when he can be gone next year? That's a full season of game reps that are gone for the player and money wasted for the program that could be used next year.

The 12/13 spot for basketball in this age is already about useless, adding two more slots is just silly.

Even for football, 20 more guys? It gives you more lottery ticket type players, but what football team is like man, 85 guys is just not enough, I need 20 more guys to manage and worry about that probably weren't good enough to play on my team anyways. Some PWO types can be offered, but still.

I would guess guys in that top 50-150 range or so might be willing to reclass, redshirt, and develop.

It would be a bet by schools that guy is going to get drawn into your culture and stick around for a few years and it could be away for less traditionally dominant schools to start getting higher rated recruits than they typically do. Think like Minnesota, Butler, Nebraska, or Northwestern for those tier of schools.

For the player, yes they are giving up a year of game reps but personally I think they would develop better playing every day against older D-1 players in practice and working with a college weight coach than they are going to benefit from playing in high school.

Yes, game reps are important for development especially in younger kids(middle school/early high school), but development takes place in practices because you're getting way more reps and able to work on improving parts of your game you might not be able to in a game(big reason why the European model tends to develop more skilled players with resources than the AAU model which is really just a glorified showcase).

My guess is you’ll see those additional spots kept open for mid season transfers.

I don't disagree with what you've said here. You'd just have to assume it's dead money if you spent it to stash a player, because it's likely they leave.

There would be plenty of practice reps, but it's not the same. It's why an Alex Legion can make 90% in practice but 30% in a game.

I am 100% with you on practice over games at a young age. As a dad with a kid in travel sports, you can tell pretty easily when you haven't practiced in a couple weeks due to the game load. Fundamentals are #1, but game reps are needed to translate the fundamentals at game speed. Geno Auriemma speaks about Americans practicing once and playing six games as opposed to Europeans practicing six times and playing one game a week. That's why they are fundamentally sound.

Love your insight!

It seems like two things are probably pretty clear: 1: KJ is probably the top guy. 2: All of the top 8 guys have a legit shot to start: KJ, Kylan, Will, Ty, Ivisic, Morez, Tre, Ben.

And that list doesn't even include Booth and DGL - guys that would probably start on a fair amount of teams at the B10 or P5 level.

The depth is unquestionably superb. The talent at the top of the roster might not be quite like it was last year - I mean...I wouldn't necessarily be willing to bet anyone doing what Terrence did (probably won't need anyone to be either) - but hope KJ, if he does indeed end up being that top guy, can prove to be a fine, solid alpha at this level.

Fill those new spots with a couple of guys who actually WANT a degree from the UI and are decent enough to be good culture guys and practice players.
