And even the 1983 action against the County would be difficult, if not impossible, if the Prosecutor's status in Kansas is like that in Illinois. And the 1983 case brought up before involving Quincy dealt with their County Coroner. The Coroner is subject to the County Handbook governing Office Holders and employees. The State's Attorney is not a County Office Holder, he is an officer of the State's executive branch. I danced this dance when I went after our County's State's Attorney seeking a special prosecutor to investigate alleged misfeasence and malfeasance.
Illinois uses a state attorney system. In Kansas she is an elected county official and county employee. Not much different than the Nifong/Durham County situation. Not saying it is a slam dunk but how hard they fought to keep the Morris evidence out tells me they knew about it, they discussed it and made a conscious decision not to reveal it. I put nothing past them

“So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent Guardian, a watchful protector, The Dark Knight."

Thank you judge Lawless for letting this fanbase witness one of the greatest seasons in Illini history. Make us proud in the nba TSJ, no one deserves it more than you.

Gotta say, it's remarkable how professionally and intelligently this whole ordeal was handled by "our side" from day one. And what a contrast to the other side.

Hats off to our AD, head coach, TSJ's teammates, the lawyers, and of course the man himself.

What a wild 6 months!

As a former Cook County Prosecutor and long time criminal defense attorney, I think that Mark Sutter is chomping at the bit to accept the challenge of bringing a case against DA Valdez and her office under whatever theory of recovery can withstand a Motion to Dismiss and after today I would pay to see his closing argument against her. Put me on that jury.

Just gotta chime in. Sorry if I posted this already:

"Take nothing on its looks; take everything on evidence. There's no better rule." - Mr. Jaggers, "Great Expectations"

Or was it Perry Mason or Matlock?

Anyway, glad and relieved for Terrence. Glad the thing is over for everyone. Is it? Hope so. Forward Ho, Terrence!

From a prosecutor perspective, assuming they stick with the case:

-Upping the charge from misdemeanor to felony was a bad gamble; misdemeanor would've given the jury more of an out

-Would not have coached the victim and friend to add the grabbing at the last minute

-Would have coached the victim to be honest about her personality
- Would have told the alleged victim there was not enough evidence to support her claim.

Unfortunately, I think most if not all the media people we hope will see the error of their ways and apologize will probably just take a very cursory look at the trial reports and conclude he was let off on a technicality or something like that so as to justify their non-response or refusal to issue an apology. Sad

As a multiple year subscriber, I just wrote a note to the editors at the Atlantic where I suggested a follow-up piece to the March 21 article. I really hope they take the time to read it ... a dive into the false allegations, and how Shannon was able to ignore the noise from reactions in the media and opposing fanbases on the court in order to lead the Illini to the Elite 8 would be an amazing story and very newsworthy with the NBA draft coming up so soon.

That seems to be exactly the type of quality long form journalism that they claim is their brand, but they seem to not actually deliver on lately.

If TSJ's attorneys weren't already fired up enough to bring the Malicious Prosecution case against DA Valdez, this "statement" should definitely be the tipping point in making that decision. What a warped person Valdez is in such a position of power that even following a jury's quick and decisive verdict in favor of TSJ after an inept prosecution she still does not understand the importance of the "presumption of innocence" in our criminal justice system. Sue her.
The DA never expected this to go to trial. She clearly brought 2 charges, with one being rape and the other a misdemeanor, because she and the accuser expected Shannon to plead guilty to the lesser charge and not risk a 12-year prison sentence in a jury trial in a far away state. The accuser could then sue Shannon in civil court for a lot of money. Neither of them wanted him in jail. They wanted him making money playing basketball somewhere but with a confession of guilt on his record. I’m sure they were both shocked when he risked his career and future to fight even the lesser charge. It took a lot of guts for TSJ to do what he did and risk jail time. He should be respected for that.

To the people saying hang the jersey- Illinois has the following rules for that:

Players selected to have their jerseys hung must have achieved any of the following criteria:
1) National Player of the Year
2) Enshrined in the National Basketball Hall of Fame
3) Big Ten Player of the Year
4) Consensus First- or Second-Team All-American
5) Illinois All-Century Team Member
6) Individual whose pioneering efforts made a significant impact on Illinois and international basketball

Unfortunately thanks to the charges, his chance of being a Consensus All-American was taken from him. Maybe he'll get selected to the next All-Century Team.
Have the All Century selection every 25 years so people remember who you're talking about. Selection next year. TJ selected. Jersey in rafters.

Can Sutter do that on his own? That is, does he need a client to bring action against DA Valdez because I just don't see TSJr doing that?

Skip ahead to 0:45. You can see the camera footage of the crowd at the Jayhawk Cafe. This is not where introverts go. (Also confirms footage is not in color, as some were wondering.)
Of course Hunter Dickinson was wearing a dumb looking, Hunter Dickinson-esque hat ...

She’s about to get counter sued so hard
I honestly kind of hope not, largely because prosecutorial and police incompetence make it clear she may legitimately have been victimized, just not by TSJ.

I mean, she could have made it up, too, but that honestly seems less likely to me (with admittedly limited information).
