Let me begin by saying I realize Liberatore is only 24 years old. (We say that often when looking at Cardinal players who have not approached their "potential".) I also know he has improved each year he has played in the majors. With the disclaimer out of the way, Matt has been rather a mediocre disappointment to me. For being atop 2-3 prospect in the Cardinal's minor league system a few years ago he has been rather uninspiring whenever he gets called up.
They are two different pitchers but you look at the performances Skenes puts in game after game and then look at Liberatore and all I can do is to shake my head.
Was listening to BenFred on the way home tonight and he said that the biggest issue with Liberatore is that the team keeps moving him around into different roles. Sometimes he's a starter. Sometimes he's a reliever but they even move him around in the bullpen in different roles. He has said he prefers to be a reliever at this point because he can mentally prepare with the possibility that he may be asked to pitch each day.
