I dunno. I know you're an optimist and I appreciate that. RayJ was also 9th in all of college basketball in assists so I feel this stat is a wash in some ways.

There is no theory they would have been better with him. Domask would have used differently had he been here. But it's not mutually exclusive. It's not like we got domask because ray j didn't come here. It was a pure add. The team in theory would have been better with ray j but it worked out in the end even without him
Twas just yesterday that we got a 5 * recruit to commit , was it not ????
And today snarkeyness has reared it's ugly head....again.....
For what reason does snarkeyness reappear after the great news of Mr. Riley decision.....has the euphoria already subsided and bickering has gained a foothold in our Illini sanctuary once again ??
Our great off season of rebuilding another roster worthy of a POSSIBLE return to an Elite 8 level or even BETTER will not be tarnished by rehashing past recruiting results in my mind...
Not at all.....
Nary
Nix
Nay
Case closed
Period.....
This is the time for celebration of a new level of recruiting success .....But I guess that's just too much to expect from this crowd of fanatics.....
So be it.......time to warm up another round of the ignore button usage.....
It's NOT personal to me , just a more pleasant way to spend my time here....
Keep on keeping on folks....may the Ancients be with you....
Adios amigos......
Jeez, when you're worse than Roscoe Eastmund...
It’s not arguable. The man, literally, hadn’t unpacked and Will Riley was on campus for an official visit. Now Jasper was just here. That is not happenstance.Don't forget arguably the biggest offseason acquisition.......Antigua
We're just gonna pretend there isn't also a 6.7 under the Assists column there? Almost a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio is pretty good (and almost nobody else on that graphic was even close to that). Just because we ended up good and not needing him to have a great offense last year doesn't necessarily mean he isn't still an excellent player.

I believe it came out he was number 10 in the '24 class.Question: When will we know Riley's ranking in the '24 class?
You mentioned how we have to shift away from rooting for players for 4 years, such as we did with your namesake Mr Carter. You clearly enjoyed the loyal project players (as do I), therefore the username doesn't check out meme works here! Just having fun on the board!
We got 2 PGs in Boswell and KJLast year our point gaurd recruitment turned into a disaster in the making. We were very fortunate that Domask was able to get the job done for us although not in a typical point gaurds fashion. Brad did a much better job this year of having viable backup plans when our initial targets fell through. I was already pretty happy with our recruitments this year even before we got Riley. He is the cherry on top of Brad's cake.
FYI Ray J was 9th in the country in assists. Marcus was best on the Illini with 3.9 A/G. He had an A/TO ratio of around 1.7. Ray J had a ratio over just over 1.9 .Assists are an over-valued statistic imo.
Regardless of whether the guys he passed the ball to were able to score or not, he still had way, way more turnovers than any of the other guys who headed up the assists leaderboard.
I just can't imagine anyone watching our point guard turn it over 4x a game while also shooting only 32% from three point range and being happy with that.
EDIT: I also never said he wasn't a good player. All I am trying to say is that many thought we would outright suck last year without him. Was proven to be incorrect, and I don't know how or why there is so much fervent defending of a player on here that nobody should even care about.

If our biggest problem is an embarrassment of riches in talent such that some players are disappointed with their roles because they could easily start elsewhere, I'm fine with that. I've made my peace.
Is this the official declaration of our Blue-Bloodedness? I'm in, where do I sign?Somehow... the (other) Blue Bloods have lived with this for many years and made a go of it. I think the Illini will find a way.
Having success is a great habit to develop. Enjoy success but never take it for granted.
... it is remarkable to see where we are today... Enter Ayo and that changed the trajectory of the program.
As most anyone here would agree, Ray J was an elite player. However, most likely he would not have raised the ceiling for the 2023-24 Illini season. You never know for certain though. We got 2 PGs in Boswell and KJ
We also have DGL and Fears is coming in 2025
A wealth of ball handlers
Marcus did a great job in breaking the press and handled Iowa States half court trap incredibly well. TSJ was our one man fast break. I don't see RayJ making a big difference vs UCONN. They destroyed everyone in the tournament.
I find it absolutely preposterous people think getting a guy as talented as Dennis would not have improved the team. I'm not enough of an expert to say how or how much - I suspect the vast majority of this board isn't either - but to suggest the team couldn't have fit him in and gotten even better is sour grapes, as far as I'm concerned.
Let the cottage cheese experiments begin.I mean, what is Loyalty supposed to do now? Will be boring dog days of summer waiting for our stacked basketball team to start the season.... Does the coaching staff even care about us?
Doesn't that comment feel good...? Not pragmatic...This is true except that we're one year early, there will still be super seniors all over college basketball next year.
I will take John Calipari problems every day of the week, but they are problems.
I think the question becomes whether we can deliver for these kids in terms of their professional stocks in a way that makes this boom self-sustaining. (Let's get TSJ off the board in the first round to start contributing to this!)
It's gonna be exciting to watch, I love an experiment.
