You can likely bet your beach house that Booth does not see himself in that position.

Not that I am hyping him...or anyone...but I don't think any of the top 10 guys on the roster see themselves outside the starting lineup. That said, I look for about 7 or 8 of them to end up being the kind of players BU sees as dependable in the clutch. Who those guys are is pretty much a guess at this time.

One thing of which I have confidence,...I look for the team FT% to be higher this year, especially if Ty can go north of 70%...but who knows?
Our free throw shooting was horrible outside of the two guys who shot the most of them.

With all this Painter debating, I'd be curious to hear how Loyalty would rank B1G coaches (Pre-2024) from best to worst, based solely on bad attitude/behavior. For me, Painter seems to be a pretty decent guy compared several others.

Dip your nuggets in my staff source sauce.
1989 had 9 legitimate players. Kaufman played in 12 games. Similarly, Small wasn't quite ready to be a major contributor yet, though he did help. I won't argue which other team may have been deeper. It's not the point.

I found that same podcast. They were upset that about 10 illinois have told them to stop talking about will riley..lol. said we were an angry fan base. Lmao
What fan base wouldn't be angry after all the crap we've been through? The TSJ situation is just the most recent. Don't get me wrong, this past season was an all time great one but...what if TSJ was never accused? Maryland would've been a win. We wouldn't have ended up in UCONNs bracket as a higher 2 seed or potential 1 😓

I think he’s advertising the program. He essentially saying that, if you have set expectations coming in to school, think again. But if you’re the type of kid that wants to be on an egoless team of players that get rewarded for hard work (and not rewarded for politic-ing), then come to Purdue.

It seemed pretty measured, but I can see why people think it's too much, with the way egos and people's "camps" work. Someone gets in his ear that he should have guaranteed PT, he demands that, and it becomes a problem for the team. My sense is that top programs don't cater like that. Programs with big holes can, because they don't have the talent to worry about what might happen.

I would think that as the game moves towards a professional model, guys will learn to get their guarantees monetarily rather than asking for PT.

I don’t see a world where Booth and DGL don’t get any minutes either. Gonna be fun to see who steps up.
Well, in your world you envision, which 2 guys do you see likely falling out of the main rotation?

I personally can see Morez/Booth sharing that rotation “spot” most of the year.

Don’t know what to think of DGL…maybe just a role like this year, which is basically spot minutes based on matchups.

Don't know about "main" rotation...gonna have to see how things play out...it's early - the whole team isn't even assembled yet...but pretty confident that none of the top 10 guys will get DNPs. JMO

The players will always know where they stand. They may not always like or believe it.
How a player practices, will determine the minutes he plays.
Every player will practice against Elite Talent everyday in practice. Most of the time better than their competitors.
He who wins the most battles in practice earns the PT.
It's not complicated. Every practice is filmed.
Coaches will evaluate and see everything. Good, Bad & Ugly.
It doesn't come down to Brad having to keep any person happy because they're a great player or threatening to leave.
It's evaluating body language, attitude and finding the men who are fighting the hardest everyday in practice. Ty & DLG will set the bar at the beginning. Not every great player is cut out for what's expected of themselves every practice.
Trust the Process

Plenty of good players on the Illini team, don't want to through out a line-up. But saw enough of Kasparas to think that he will see a lot of time on the court. His fundamental skills of dribbling, passing, shooting, free throws will keep him on the court. Mentioned before, I feel his closest game comparison to a player last season in college was Tyler Kolek and he comes in a Brandon Poziemski frame. May even close out games with 3 technically sound guards (Boswell, KJ, and DGL) who can shoot free throws and defend.

I think Morez and Ivisic basically split minutes at the 5 (assuming Ivisic makes it). DGL is going to have to play some because we only have two other true guards on the roster. Although it might not be as many minutes as he'd like.

While it's fun to think about these things - We don't know yet if we'll get Riley. We don't know if someone will decide to leave. We don't know if all the guys people are mentioning will be healthy.

Before the 21-22 season, we had posters on here contemplating that we could go 12 deep. By the end of the year we couldn't find enough healthy bodies at some positions. These things work themselves out.

If we get everyone Riley and everyone else is here and healthy, I think our rotation will be what the insiders have hinted at above. Kylan, KJ, Riley, Ben, and Ivisic starting with Morez, Ty, and White the main reserves. DGL and Booth would still play, but likely no more than about 10 mpg on average. But again that's in the fantasy world where everything breaks right with recruiting, retention, and health.

By the tournament, the rotation will be cut down to 8. My starters + 3 off the bench are:

1: Boswell
2: KJ
3: Riley
4: Humrichous
5: Ivisic

Off the bench: Rodgers, White, and Morez

I feel like this starting 5 seems to be the most common and the 3 guys off the bench provide the best help to that 5.
** Replace Morez with Booth and I then agree. 8 is the number.

** DGL should be #9 as another guard off the bench, when needed (due to injury, foul trouble, etc.)
** Morez will play the same role as an extra Big, when needed (due to injury, etc.).
** Davis and Jakstys probably won't see much tick. However, if Davis can hit 43% from deep, he might just turn some heads and earn occasional minutes.

In the spirit of trying to be realistic (because each year at this stage I convince myself we’ve got a roster of 11 all Americans) I think history says there will be a core 8 man rotation that gets the vast majority of minutes. Can a team go 9-10 deep? Sure. But most often the 9-10 guys are not consistent contributors.

The younger the player, most often, the less likely they are to have high major impact. I think these freshman have a ton of talent, but playing at a high level consistently against high major competition is a lot to ask.

There could be two projections on lineups, one to start the season and one to end it. The top 8 will likely be different by the end. But based on how Brad likes age and experience I think it starts like this:

1. Boswell
2. White
3. Rodgers
4. Hum
5. Ivisic

6. Riley
7. DGL
8. Johnson
9. KJ

Ends something like this:

1. Boswell
2. Riley
3. White
4. Hum
5. Ivisic

6. DGL
7. Johnson
8. KJ/Rodgers

I know a lot of people are high on KJ, but he’s young and the competition will be a major leap up. Not saying he can’t, but more likely he won’t be as big an impact as people might expect. Hope he proves me wrong!

This roster has more talent from top to bottom than any I can remember. Maybe not as top heavy, but very balanced when Booth is your 10th best player.

Can’t wait to see how it all shakes out.
I feel like folks are under valuing Morez because hes been committed for so long.

He sure seems like he'll give Ivisic a run for a starting spot...

Certainly not meant to be any slight. I would love for him to come in a blow everyone out of the water. But being an 18 yr old freshman whose played mainly against other high schoolers compared to a 21 yr old whose played against full grown adult pro’s is the main reason for the difference.

Morez has all the tools to be a pro in the future and I sure hope he develops quicker than expected!

Def not an insult. Just that MJJ went from top 100 to top 30 over the yrs and I dont know if expectations here have shifted to match.

I think folks are pencilling in Riley to a position with more competition than Morez will have for the 5. I could see Morez as a darkhorse B10FotY.

Agreed. I can't imagine Morez not in the top 8. I think he and Ivisic will basically split minutes at the 5.
