I'm not celebrating until I see a post from Riley. Been nut-punched one to many times.
Not just any nut punch either but the Jean Claude Vandamme version.

NCAA Tourney is all about match-ups. By the time March rolls around UI will be one of those teams that no one wants to see on their side of the bracket.

As far as BU goes, keep making the 2nd weekend and eventually match-ups will fall your way. So much variance in knock-out style tournaments, just need to keep getting bites at the apple and eventually things will fall your way.

It’s going to be such a great thing to have a true 7 feet 1 inch rim protector and a seasoned point guard.

Our team will look as different than it has in a long time, for sure since 2005 and maybe ever.

Starters will be all great shooters and will go like this: 7’1”, 6’9”, 6’9”, 6’6” and 6’2”. That is crazy.
The question is....how will a group with that type of size deal with quicker, shifter perimeter players.

Last year, we had all kinds of trouble keeping guys out of the lane, which inevitably led to help which resulted in uncontested kick out threes OR drive, collapse, dish then dunks.

Having a shot eraser will most definitely help.

Offensively, it's phenomenal. The other side of the court is where it can get dicey.

Whooooa.....

Put a couple of Final Fours in there and then those numbers make sense.

I LOVE BU. He's brought us back from the depths of sub mediocrity. HOWEVER, a top 3 coach doesn't put you into the 2nd weekend a second time, then we celebrate the accomplishment. A top 3 coach puts the program at a level where we're shocked when we don't get into the second weekend.
You do what it takes to retain him. Rick Barnes & Bruce Pearl each have 1 final 4 with 0 ships and make $1M more than Underwood.

BU will not have to win 2 championships to make 7 million a year. That is just wild.
Never said he would have to...
The original post suggested that if we make it to the second weekend again, that Brad would be looking at a salary bump from 4.5M to 7-9M
Which is WILD

the 2 championships part is alluding to Dan Hurley... who makes 5.35M

Obviously overtime Brad will eventually be in that 7-9M range because salaries go up but that's not the point here... the question is 'will he get there next season, if we make the second weekend?'... and the only reasonable answer is NO, unless he need changes his name to Dan Hurley

Just to settle the debates …

Starters:
Boswell
KJ/Ty
Riley
Humrichous
Ivisic

Bench:
Ty/KJ
Tre
Rez
DGL
Booth
Davis?

Redshirt:
Jakstys and I could potentially see Davis redshirting as well ...
The starters and bench are oozing full of talent. Just stacked.

I remember what Oakland's Greg Kampe said during last year's postgame presser after Illinois beat Oakland. He said Illinois' defense was tough and they can guard because of size, athleticism, and strength. This upcoming team has all three. Offensively, they have a lot of firepower. Defensively, if they improve and grow in that area over the course of the year, they're gonna be fun to watch on the defensive end.

I don't want to get into an unnecessary big debate here but:

"Let's pump the brakes on that kind of salary until he wins a couple championships...

that being said he will earn a sizable raise"

You did...

If BU makes an e8 then completely resets a roster with 2 year players, makes a S16 and sets them up for a championship run in '27 you don't think he'll be able to ask for top 5 money?

If you think that most of the top 10 in coaches won't be making 7-9M in the next 2 years you're not paying attention. Oates, Hurley & Calipari are setting the market this year, it's only going to drag up everyone else.

This is all shaping up for Brad to win B1G coach of the year (finally).
Will the old voters really give it to him for portal management though? Serious question. Or does that work against him since "look what he had to work with" and they usually reward the coach who most exceeded expectations.

Over the long haul I think we are trending your way but not sure we are there yet.

One difference this year is we may have an actual rim protector in Ivisic.
I am the FURTHEST thing from an expert to be certain, but Tomislav does not appear to be a great shot blocker. He doesn’t have that quick twitch athleticism. HOWEVER, he is 7 foot 1 so if he can move his feet and put his hands straight up in the air he can alter a lot of shots and just make attempts at the rim more difficult.

That would be of great benefit. For all Coleman did for this program, and he did a lot, last year was a layup drill for opposing big men. Illinois almost single-handedly put Julian Reese in the NBA.

To be clear, the above comment is not meant as a slam to Hawkins. Love the guy and I find his Internet presence hilarious. He was just ill-equipped to guard big men and it showed. Tomislav will help with that. I just wouldn’t expect huge block totals. JMHO.

Unless there is some type of damper put on NIL, there will be players in the 7-9 M$/season range in the next decade. Almost a certainty. I don't expect it because hopefully, common sense will prevail...but there is very little of that around these days in college athletics and their decision makers. They all want to dazzle with one-upsmanship.

There are probably more outliers, but a quick scan of the list leaves me really stunned on how much Shaka Smart makes ($2.2 mill - 60th highest paid coach).

This is a really exciting time to be an Illinois basketball fan, yet there’s some wild speculation going on. You can have all the talent in the world but without chemistry and connection like we had last year, a team won’t thrive. We’ll have to wait and see how this entirely new (young and well paid) team gels on and off the court in this new B1G and beyond.

UCONN backed off …

I also am not going to give the Kentucky coach any credit for his best add being the 6th man at freaking Dayton … I mean he can really shoot, but he wasn’t good enough to start in the A10 ? 🚩

I mean at least Cal brought in monster level talent … Coaching issues for sure … But I don’t care how good of a coach you are … You have to get talent …

Top 5 money is 5.7M ...
If we make the second weekend again, then I think Brad will get a .5-1M bump getting him to 5-5.5M. That is an 11-22% raise.
If we overperform and maybe get to a Final 4, then maybe he surpasses 6M.... but I still firmly stand that 7-9M by next season is absurd
