Ty Rodgers to take redshirt year

#226
The problem for Ty is that Brad can't really play him and Rez at the same time, or else the offense starts to gum up like a Mike Woodson coached team. And with this year's roster, it's more advantageous to have Rez's big man skillset eating up some of those available non-scorer minutes than Ty's game. He'll spend the year working on his skillset, enter the portal, get paid, and be a starter at some other P4 school.

Well, you can reward your "glue" guys and play rosters full of good players that we loved like Sincere, Ty, Egwu, etc, etc... like we had for 10-15 years......
*coughJohnGrocecough* and enjoy an occasional B1G tourney run.

Or, you can recruit over them with Ayo, Kofi, TSJ, CoHawk, KJ, Ivisic, and Will Riley....and win B1G Championships and play in the 2nd weekend in March.

Which "ick" do you prefer?

Big time Underwood fan but this is wrong on so many levels. You don't reward loyalty(Ty Rodgers staying) by giving him a potentially diminishing role. That's not right and Underwood will either sink or swim with this type of mentality. I hope for his sake, he swims but I can see a scenario like 2 yrs ago but even worse b/c there is absolutely no returning chemistry with this team unlike that team in 2022-2023. I feel more bad for Ty Rodgers than I do for us as fans b/c that dude has most likely worked his butt off b/c he's just that kind of guy and this is what he gets in return? Newcomers jumping him in the pecking order? It's complete BS. It's not really similar to Sencire b/c Sencire was behind senior laden squad of players. This is actually completely different. This sends a bad message to players who stay in the program for 2+ yrs and that message is that they're expendable regardless of the contributions they've made to the program and Ty has made major contributions. He is not a bit player like Sencire. He was on a trajectory to be a 10 ppg, 6 rbg, 3-4 apg, 1 steal per game type of contributor. Draymond Green light if you will. Now, we may never see that truly come to fruition
I read your comments as saying that Rodgers should get playing time over guys who clearly are more talented than him (KJ, Riley, White), mainly because he’s put time in here for two years. I don’t think that’s how competitive basketball works at this level.

Some really wild takes in here. This was Ty's decision, and his alone. I don't doubt for 1 second that BU was nothing but completely honest with him on where he stood on the team and in the rotation. Ty is making the best move FOR HIM. Is this best for the team right now? NO! But now that the staff knows they can solidify a rotation that helps mitigate Ty's loss. In the end, the team MAY be better, maybe not. It's done, it's over. Let's move on. I-L-L

I love Ty, but this is flat-out wrong. Underwood's job is to win as much as possible. New season, new team, players have to earn their time. This is how high-level team sports work. Being recruited over is pretty much standard practice. Sink or swim, you're in the deep end.
This is a bad look for recruits. You fail to see that side of it. There will be backlash in terms of recruits questioning BU's committment that he makes to prospects to then just go back and over-recruit. Some schools are not playing that game and something tells me that it will backfire unless BU maintains a high level program

Now that college basketball is no longer about scholarships and all about NIL, I don't think the concept of creaning applies anymore. In this situation, a player isn't getting his scholarship yanked, he's yanking an NIL bag away from donors. The power dynamic is totally different here.
You make this sound like this is all about money. What you fail to remember is that these players have pride and they go to these programs to play competitive D-1 basketball b/c they see basketball as an avenue towards a career path(whether the NBA or internationally). I guarantee that Ty wants to make the most out of his collegiate career and being Creaned into a 10 or 15 minute role is a slap in the face.

I see a lot of people here basically just accepting this as standard practice these days. It doesn't make it right or proper. We're talking about Ty Rodgers...the program guy and one of the couple of keepers of the program. How can he be one of our top leaders and be a redshirt? Something is terribly wrong with that statement

Seems to me like this was Ty's decision. Brad isn't making him redshirt. This is purely Ty's call. Not sure of your issue. Are you saying that Brad shouldn't bring in elite players because it might hurt other guy's feelings? That's just a loser's(not you) mentality. It's competition at its highest form.

If Ty doesn't think that he can play at a level that these other guys can....again, that's really on him.

The second part to all of this is the these coaches are screwed either way. If Brad sits tight and Ty unexpectedly hops into the portal, then what? The coaches at this level can NEVER just assume that his roster is returning.

Brad had to replace TJ, Domask, Hawkins, Dain, Guerrier, Goode, Harris, Hansberry, Harmon, etc.....five of those to the portal.

This is where the college game is. Either hop aboard or eventually get fired.

Irregardless of outcomes this season, it’s here to stay. We are fully embracing modern 2024 basketball with Brad & Tyler at the helm. We shot 42 threes tonight!
Look at the opponent and stop overhyping the lopsided win against EIU. I want to see this statement again in March if we're dealing with an up and down team and see if you feel this same way.

Seems some of our fans don’t want us to operate like a top-tier program…🤷🏻‍♂️

You mean operate like KU, Arizona, UNC, Kentucky, and the other cheats? There's a way to operate with honor and integrity...go look at UCONN

Sure we can talk. There will be games this season where we will say we could have used his rebounding and defense. But on the whole it sure looks like Ty has been over recruited by players that provide shooting. And it sounds like Ty didn’t want to be a role player.
He was a role player last year. That statement is false. It sounds like you don't actually know what's going on. Ty has always been willing to play a role. Don't character assassinate the young man. He was one of the more unselfish players on last year's team playing out of position and doing the dirty work. On a team that is young and not "tough," we sure could use someone of Ty's caliber to rebound, do the little things, and be the unselfish player that we know who he is. But, because newcomers like Tre White and Ben Hummer are automatically put above Ty in the pecking order without earning their stripes and their way, who can blame Ty for being frustrated? Will Riley and Kasparas may end up being special players, but Ty earned his way into a better draw than getting passed by the likes of Hummer and Tre White

So many fans fall in love with try hard guys. Sencire was all effort, but I could kick the ball in the hoop at a higher rate than he could shoot it. Ty Rodgers was a worse shooter than Sencire. In 2 years as a wing player, he took ONE 3, and he missed it. I would guess he took less than 10 shots from further than 6 feet.

He wasn't an average shooter, he wasn't a bad shooter, he was a non shooter. He wouldn't even take the shot. He was a warrior on the boards and scored most of his points that way. I had hoped when he came in he would provide a lot more in terms of assists and be able to play some point forward, but that didn't happen. And quite frankly, his defense wasn't stellar enough to make up for the 4 on 5 we were playing on offense.

I love a try hard guy too, but I like really good players better. As soon as Tre White transferred in, the writing was on the wall. White is basically Rodgers with a better shot. Then when we brought in Riley too, I actually expected Rodgers to transfer. Not sure why he didn't if he was going to end up redshirting.

After my initial shock and outrage, I'm starting to come back full circle on this a bit.

If this was ten years ago, Ty would be stuck on the bench, not getting paid and would have to sit a year to go somewhere else and be stuck there if it wasn't a good fit.

Now he gets paid NIL money and doesn't burn a year of eligibility so he can continue his career elsewhere. I was so excited about Ty when he committed, and my son went to some of his camps. Great person, awesome with the kids.

However, it really seems like this was 100% his choice and strictly a business decision. Obviously he can contribute at Illinois, but not at the level he'd like. It's up to Brad to find the best players, and it's up to the players to make Brad not play over them. I'm sure we will miss him at some point this season like we did with Sencire last year.

I wish Ty the best of luck for the rest of his career.

Do you know what is a good look for recruits? Getting KJ and Riley drafted in the first round next year and winning a lot of games in the process.

College basketball is now more than ever a business for players and these 4 or 5 years can go a long way to securing the future they want. Because we fans choose to get emotionally wrapped up with a team and its players doesn’t change that. So let’s stop with all the disloyalty talk about Ty to the team and BU to Ty. They both have jobs to do and both are doing what they feel is best his future (Ty) and the school/program (BU).

I am really amazed by the number of posts blasting Ty for springing this on the team the day the season starts. It’s as if people think Ty just walked into BU’s office yesterday morning out of the blue and said, “Coach, I’ve decided to redshirt.” I’m sure there had been at least conversations about role/playing time for at least several weeks. For all we know Ty made and communicated his decision to BU weeks ago. There was no reason to publicly announce the decision ahead of time. All that would have done is cause a distraction for the players to deal with while preparing for upcoming season. Makes perfect sense to wait until day of game. Eliminate all the questions to players about it prior to game, and greatly reduce the number after the game because there is actual basketball to talk about.

if there is a bight side to this, it's that it opens up more minutes for Booth. He looked pretty good last night. Definitely has League potential, IMO.

Ty was in no way creaned into 10-15 minutes per game. He was asked to improve certain skills and get better, which did not happen. Because we brought in more talented players he realized his role on this team done and he choose to sit it out. Why? because he will get paid whether he plays or sits. This is the new West, standard whether you like it or not. This is the exact reason why Bennett retired..

Until the NCAA and schools work all of this out, this will be the new standard. Win at all costs! Loyalty and Everyday guys is a thing of the past except it and move on.

What top schools/coaches are giving 20- 25 minutes to a player who the coach doesn’t feel has earned them just because he was on the team the year before? Brad isn’t running Ty off. There was a role on the team for him. It just wasn’t the role Ty wanted. I don’t blame Ty nor Brad.

You know what is really a bad look to recruits. A coach who won’t play the best players and forces freshmen to sit whether they’re better than another player or not. The majority of recruits just want a chance to compete on a level playing field for minutes. And that percentage goes way up when you’re talking about the skill level of the players Illinois now recruits. Tilting the playing field in the direction of a player who was there first for that reason alone is bad for wins, bad for team morale and bad for recruiting.

If I remember right we could have used Harris defense a few times! Hope this isn't happening again. Like Ty, he made great strides from year one to year 2. Wish best for him.
