So what would be a comfortable enough lead for Hicks to get the ball again? I would say probably 4 runs at minimum. Hopefully we can have a few more lopsided games, but if not, he's going to need to take an assignment to get game reps.

I'm glad to see Noot back. We missed his energy. Getting Waino back sometime during this road trip will also be a nice lift.
As I read this I was thinking 5. Problem is, 3,4 or 5 run leads don't happen very often. But in addition to the big lead, they need to have the SP pitch count high enough to be pulled. If they have a 10 run lead and the pitcher has only thrown 60 pitches, Hicks ain't getting into the game anytime soon.

I'm watching the game tonight on Bally Sports AZ...............Goldie getting the day off.........Flaherty SP

top of 2nd Az leads 1-0..........

Jack had been fine so far. First pitch to Marte that scored the run was lazy, but he has settled down.

Looks like Contreras has found a groove at the plate .............2 doubles tonite and he drove in Donovan in bottom of the 6th to tie the game at 1-1.......

#531
Flaherty's biggest weaknesses are BB and solo home runs......ugh......2-1 AZ

I hate this game sometimes.........................I really really do...............maybe Hicks gets some action tonitght...........

Why DC in to hit for Gorman over Goldy? Goldy could get 1 swing, dude hits like .450 against lefties.

Marmol is really rotating the lineups around early to see what is or more likely not working so far with the guys. There are other guys rotated but he has really rotated TON and Walker around 1-2 spots to test things out. Good/bad pitching and bunch of other factors go into it but here is the record I have tallied with TON and Walker in certain spots hitting in the lineups. Definitely expected Walker to struggle a bit at times and TON is risk/reward type of guy.

Cardinals 7-10

TON K 19 BB 2

Walker K 17 BB 1

TON batting 5th and Walker 7th record 0-1

TON batting 6th and Walker 7th record 2-1

TON batting 6th and Walker 8th record 1-3

TON batting 7th and Walker 8th record 1-2

Games where one started and other didn't record 3-2

my frustration isn't with Flaherty or our pitching. it's with our run production. this lineup
should get us 5 runs a night and we can't support our pitching. I think that was the source
of Flaherty's shout out as he exited.

Anybody heard that the clubhouse and the front office is irritated with Marmol?
Baseball is a team first place, don't air your dirty laundry to the press. you have a
problem with Oneill 3/4 speed and getting thrown out at home, pull him in the
office and tell him. i guess it's not the only time. Yadi and Albert aren't around to
steer the ship.

I wonder if the front office has Yadi is on speed dial?

Kind of goes both ways....front office has done this for years and years. Nothing different from past years to this year at all. Cardinals are something like 8 games over .500 total before the All-Star break since 2016.

Front office rides out the beginning of the season and makes moves accordingly later in season. Rinse and repeat

Is ok to be upset with Marmol...same time he is tinkering with the pieces he was given

I have no idea what the front office thinks about Marmol. But let us remember this. When Schildt was fired by the fromt office, the same front office hired Marmol very quickly. Matheny, Schildt, Marmol. The manager situation is on Mo and the DeWitts. If Marmol goes, heads need to roll in the front office. I know the latter part of the previous statement will not occur.

Decided to have some fun with stats, so here are the ERA and FIP of our starting pitchers. FIP is like ERA but only measures outcomes in the complete control of the pitcher: home runs, strikeouts, walks, HBP. FIP is considered a better predictor of future results.

Mikolas - ERA: 8.10; FIP: 4.91

Montgomery - ERA: 4.84; FIP: 2.86

Flaherty - ERA: 2.95; FIP: 5.47

Matz - ERA: 6.48; FIP: 5.05

Woodford - ERA: 5.65; FIP: 6.87

First off, yikes. Second, there's reason to be optimistic about Mikolas and Monty based on their lower FIP, though Mikolas' is still not great. FIP indicates we could see some regression from Flaherty. Matz and Woodford have just not been good no matter how you slice it.

Bonus fun: logjammed OF ranked by OPS+

1. Lars Nootbaar: 190
2. Alec Burleson: 110
3. Tyler O’Neill: 107
4. Jordan Walker: 84
5. Dylan Carlson: 54

Good stuff with the stats above

Mozeliak is playing Texas Holdem right now and is staying in with his hand until the end. I am interested to see what happens to the pitching lineup once Wainwright returns. Wainwright, Mikolas, Montgomery, Flaherty and Matz/Woodford don't seem like a bad 1-5 option. Injuries/bad performance happen and one guy to keep an eye on as well would be bringing Liberatore up and would give you a second lefty in the lineup later in the season.

Interested to see if Dylan Carlson can get some offense going this season or not. Down the chopping order now but hoping he can turn it on....

Interesting stuff.
As far as the pitching goes, 3 or 4 starts isn't a large enough sample size to draw much of a conclusion. (I am sure you know that already. Just making a Captain Obvious comment.) When they have 10 starts we will get a little better picture. But as of now yikes is right.
Another stat that shows the SP are failing is WHIP. (Walks and Hits per inning.) The "best" SP is Montgomery and he is a very mediocre 1.34. As a reference 15 of the teams have a WHIP of 1.33 or less. That includes all pitchers on their teams. StL is 1.48 which is 25th.

Finally having a good day with runners in scoring position.

I find this Cardinals team almost as hard to watch as Illini Basketball this past season. Every time I watch, a reliever comes in and blows a close game to smithereens (limited sample size I know, but...).

I think we need to trade some of our positional depth for some pitching at some point, even if it involves giving up Wynn + Carlson, TON or Burleson. I think Edman, Gorman & Donovan are a great core middle infield going forward, so I'm not too worried about losing Wynn. We need a solid starter and a couple of relievers who won't poop the bed every time they go in. Liberatore is 3-0, 2.38. Why not bring him up again?

Winn is not getting traded

Just turned 21 last month and needs time at AAA. Fans are excited after seeing him at spring training but he needs some work on hitting, defense and needs to play daily. Name is mentioned a lot but he was projected to be up in 2024 possibly before spring training and that won't change unless he tears the cover off the ball or a major injury occurs. Even start of next season he is just turning 22

The quicker moves will happen with demotions/call ups right now. We haven't played a full week of games with all guys available on offense and still don't have Wainwright back yet. No need to make major moves at this time.

I mentioned Liberatore this morning.....surprised if he is not up sometime but not yet

Not often you will see Goldschmidt and Arenado combine 0-7 (each got a walk) and score 14 runs :ROFLMAO:

Only 5 games but kind of like Nootbaar's stat line of batting .230 but on base percentage is .565 with 10 walks

heads should roll. it feels like every decision they make is a "were smarter than everyone else" decision. we can do
more with less pitching, payroll, blah, blah blah. chance to pay this guy and get a #1 starter, nope we don't need him.
chance to get a real shortstop, nope lets not pay him. were so smart we drafted a college catcher/third baseman and
will turn him into a SS, then luck into a shortstop who they said wasn't nearly as good as the kid who washed out.
It must be the smug look on Moz's face that pisses me off.,.

what would it take to trade for a #1 young arm? a couple bats/outfielders not named Walker and a young minor league
arm or two? with Winn coming next year would we give up a middle infielder? im afraid every deal would have to include
walker and/or winn to get value, but were long on position players and short on pitching.
