For the Cardinals and manager Oliver Marmol’s plan to get Jordan Hicks to find consistency, the situation will be key.
As the righty has struggled with command and overall effectiveness to begin the season, the Cardinals will look to get him into games in lower-stakes spots while he works through the issues that have led to struggles.
“We need to figure out a way for him to be more effective and usable. And we’ve got to have a good enough plan to do that where he’s comfortable with it and we feel good about it,” Marmol said before Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh that the Cardinals won 5-4 in 10 innings and in which Hicks did not pitch. “… (Saturday) he was forced into a high-leverage situation. There’s no way around that one. But figuring out a way to get him right.”
In Hicks’ outing Saturday, he recorded just one out and allowed three hits — one a two-run homer by Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen that gave the Pirates the lead in the 10th inning. Hicks was charged with three runs in the 6-3 loss.
He’s allowed nine runs, 11 hits, walked eight batters, and thrown three wild pitches in 5⅔ innings across seven relief appearances . Hicks has thrown strikes on 55% of 143 total pitches this year.
