Illinois Hoops Recruiting Thread

If he was "very good" he wouldn't have been sat in the most important games of the season. His per-40 numbers were basically worse across the board from his sophomore season here.

He had an assist-to-turnover ratio of under 1.0. He shot 36% from 3 on 5.5 attempts per game but shot 41% from 3 the year before for us on 4 attempts per game.

Again, he was fine for a mediocre Syracuse team in a really weird Covid season. Nothing about his season says "very good" to me.
Just saying if you look at his numbers they don't look all that different then what Coleman put up last year. Obviously that's just stats and they don't always tell the story but that looks like a pretty good season until he ended up in Boeheim's doghouse.

He would've been a great piece on that 21 Illinois team that drastically lacking in size on the wing.

The peak of Alan's collegiate career was when he "accidently" stepped on Sasha Stefanovic's face vs. Purdue. From that point on he had to try and live up to his legendary status and it was too much weight to bear without Sasha's maxillary bones.

Oh bullsquirt, he didnt step on anybody's face, what's wrong with you? He stepped on his stomach. And got the T and a suspension for it. You must be a Purdont fan.

Ayo's the one that got his face broken by one of Jizzo's goons.

IMO, the difference between #17 & number 150 is typically not as great as the difference between #17 & #1. There are only a few genetic freaks a year.

Attitude, aptitude, and time on task will make the difference in 4 years.

Coleman Hawkins was a 3-star player, #167. The 44th best PF in his class. BU doesn't put a lot of stock in rankings...
This was more about starting right away than overall college career. Love Coleman but he needed a couple years to develop and we are in an era where many kids don't stick around at the same school all 4 years. Rankings aren't the most important but are somewhat a decent indicator of college readiness right away. If we are going to cherry pick some rankings I would say the difference between Ayo at #30 and the #1 was much less than the difference between Ayo at #30 and Tevian Jones at #102 in the 2018 class...

Another thing to consider is recruiting classes as a whole are very different in quality from year to year. One year a class might be absolutely loaded at the top like 2007 with Beasley, Mayo, D.Rose, Gordon, Kevin Love, DeAndre Jordan, Kyle Singler, James Harden, Blake Griffin (edit: wow, never realized how stacked that 07 class was). The next year it might be pretty ho-hum, or even fairly poor in some cases as far as elite talent. I think there's obviously much less variance the further down you go, though.

I don't think anyone has any illusions of Wagler playing a lot next year. You can't build an entire roster with guys who expect to play immediately. You need some guys who are there to develop, even if they end up playing somewhere else. You have to practice against someone, and hopefully they aren't pouting about not playing.

When it comes to having great players on your roster, and getting immediate impact from newcomers, the transfer portal is your best bet. Look at last years All-America Team. Only one of those guys was around a Top 50 or even 4-star prep recruit. (RJ Davis, #52 Rivals) Davis was barely top 200 going into his junior year.

1st Team:
Shead was a 3 -star.
Edey - unranked
Newton - unranked
Knecht - unranked

2nd team had one elite recruit (Filipowski #5 Rivals)
2 top 50ish recruits (Dickinson & Holmes)
2 unranked guys (Sears & Kolek)

IMO people get too wrapped up in NBA potential and/or eventual NBA success when discussing recruiting rankings. Yeah, player X who was ranked #4 overall starts for NBA team Y, but he didn't even go to college (G-league) or was a 1 year college player who had a mediocre season because he was all potential.

No one is disagreeing on these points. I was just saying a high 4 star could still possibly be considered a starter right away while a low 4 star like Wagler (who imo is more like a 3 star but ranking sites are inconsistent with their star system over the years) probably would not at most power 4 schools and therefore the star system isn't a great one to accurately define players.

Hey CoalCity - I think you were reading this wrong. I hated Sasha and have to admit that I replayed that episode several times. For me it was one of Alan's highlights (not a negative) and made him legendary like Lucas Johnson or Dennis Rodman. Fan of all three. But you were right about Sasha's stomach. I recalled it incorrectly as his face. Bottom line is there is no worry about Boiler or Hoosier love in this camp. I just happen to live in Indiana, hence the name.

All good and I appreciate you making the distinction between "stepping on" and "stomping on" that a lot of folks were unable to do at the time.

I see. Right now, the Fighting Illini program is debating whether or not a 5-star player will start next year. While a very high 4-star might have a chance, its' pretty unlikely the way things are going... which is awesome.
I just think the whole rankings thing is way over-blown. No one knows anything until they see these guys against high major players. Couple that with the fact that a guy like Wagler still has to play his senior year, who knows where he will end up. Obviously, BU & Co. see something more than the national scouts see if they pushed this hard to get him. Their track record speaks for itself.

Good point. If you watch the replay he hardly put any weight at all on him and it was more of a "taunt" than a flagrant or violent incident. I was appalled at the suspension. He liked to get inside people's heads which is ok by me (as long as he plays for my team!) Truth be told, there were more pounds per square inch in Juwan's infamous "slap"

They are debating if Will Riley will start? I would say he is a lock. Morez is a 4 star that has a chance to start.
