Anyone that still tries to sell the Pope hire is delusional …

It was a MAJOR downgrade from Cal …

They’ve lost quite a few NIL pledges already according to someone on their staff … Lost over $2 million in NIL they thought they were gonna have going forward …

Hard to imagine how playing at KSU is an equal or better opportunity than coming back for us would've been
It seems doubtful the staff saw him as the guy if he came back, likely the super glue guy we've seen & by most accounts both sides were ok with the split.

Tang is a good head coach, Hawk has an opportunity to be THE guy, they have a slotted in C (so no risk of being played out of position), passionate fan base, etc.

More likely Utah Lake, given that's the one Provo is next door to. But yeah, BYU is probably gonna be good.
ByU is in a tough league too. I am not quite sold on Catchings being a high impact player this year. Don't get me wrong, he will be good.

Hope Co-Hawk tears the BIG 12 up! He's sure not hurting for $

Was assistant at Baylor for 18 years. Awesome first year. Brought in 10 transfers. Was a NCAA 3 seed. Beat a 14, 6, and 7 seed before losing to #9 seed FAU.
Mediocre year 2. Should be interesting to see how he does year 3-5. B12 is tough basketball conference Kansas, Baylor, Houston.

Insiders said we had money both for him and Domask. I'd assume that if Coleman made it clear that he was coming back to us before we went on our Euro shopping spree we would've had more than enough to take care of him.
Hawkins is one of my favorite Illinois players of the past decade, and I would have loved to have him back, but he wasn’t worth 2 mil to us. And that’s not a slight towards him at all.

No argument that Pope is step down from Cal and donors/businesses can put their money wherever they believe makes the most sense for them, but the ego that some of these people have. Don’t get the coach they want, so rather than support their team to the extent they planned they clamp their purses shut. Won’t that hurt the team they love? Of course, but hey, the sooner Pope is gone we can get in a guy we want.

What your talking about is likely something completely different from what I saw...but on a podcast where two zona fans on the podcast continuously claimed...

ILL fans have no place in CBB, their program is way better than ours outside of what happened in '05, and that they think they have a real good shot at land Riley...

a poster literally said the SAME EXACT thing with the same exact wording.

Those 2 so called "podcasters" were a bigger laugh for me tbh 😂 😂

Looking at how Tangs teams have played. Dug McDaniel is going to be the guy and will be incredibly ball dominant.

Coleman will have to take whatever is leftover along with Achor and the other recruits.

I came across this article by Evan Miyakawa today which discussed how to build the optimal roster in the portal age. While it has only been a few years of the transfer portal in its glory, it's definitely interesting the trends that have shown up between the teams that are highly successful. His main takeaways seem to be:

1. Fill roster with talented players (There's a clear correlation between talented players based on rankings and team success)
2. Returning players should account for at least 50% of the playing time
3. Prioritizing players who can play at least 2 seasons for you

Of the 10 teams that flipped their whole roster (<15.5% returners minutes) in the last 10 years, only one had a successful season. Conversely, teams with low roster turnover have performed extremely well with only 1 missing the tournament.

He also found that teams that have a high min % with talented freshman tend to perform better when they have a high returner min rate as well (<40%). Teams that rely on freshman classes that are outside the top 20 tend to severely underperform.

Obviously there are exceptions to this rule, but I thought the article was very interesting to read. I'm happy with how Coach Underwood seems to subscribe to this line of thinking with the 2+ year potential of this year's transfers, but I hope we can retain some more talent than we have in past years if the value is correct! As highlighted in the article, all 3 of the last national champions have been built this way. There are always outliers, but continuity is a very underrated thing in the portal era
