For some reason I thought Riley’s visit to Kentucky was yesterday, but this makes it look like it’s actually today.
gotta like our chances. i mean, they dont even have a court in their arena?!?

Basically that he's a little too happy-go-lucky about it all; that is seen as a sign of immaturity.

Vecenie says he actually enjoys the Coleman Hawkins experience but that NBA teams just want to see a bit more maturity out of him. The specific instance he mentioned was that he said at the draft combine that he wanted to go to a football school if he transfers somewhere (as opposed to say, a place where they have a chance for a championship). I read it as they don't believe he's not taking the opportunity seriously enough.

It's an interesting question. NIL has meant that players potentially see the NBA as just an option and not the dream. Coleman has a year of eligibility left and he can just be like, cool I'll just go to this school and doesn't have to show the drive to make an NBA roster. And teams will probably only take a flyer on him rather than call his name in the first round.
We love Coleman, but Vecenie's feedback makes sense. If you're a fringe draft talent, every single thing comes into a microscope from a GM's perspective.

I think Coleman should've kept his mouth closed regarding where he would want to go to college if he wasn't going to be drafted. Especially the "football school" comments made it seem like to an outside that he's more focused on partying than going to where he can best showcase his skills for the next level.

I agree that it's super stupid to pick nits like that (see: my prof pic), but that's the game you gotta play if you want to try to be one of <600 people on this Earth privileged enough to play in the NBA next season.
I think it’s a fair assessment. Coleman has some maturing to do and has a lot to learn/ plenty of room for growth. I do however think that if a projected lottery pick had the same kinds of issues then NBA teams wouldn’t be all sanctimonious about the character of those players or their maturity levels

There's some concern among a player or two about the Illini's pursuit of Will Riley. Playing time, NIL $, etc. But that was expected.

That kind of smoke might be a good sign on how things are trending with Riley.
I have to imagine Tre White would have some concerns given he would be most impacted, but again - you have to earn your PT- we don't know how ready KJ will be even though he looks like he will be awfully ready

Sure, but anyone who watched Brad give big minutes to DGL last year when the surefire players were struggling should know their opportunity will come eventually as long as they play hard.

And if you don't want to play hard, why are you here, exactly?

If Tre White ends up leaving (very unlikely IMO)..think we should target a guy like Monsanto, who is willing to earn it and can be an integral piece to the team...

It's been said on here that his asking price isn't unnecessary at all and he's willing to earn PT and work himself into the mix...

Another byproduct of the NIL landscape? I mean, why welcome a great player to boost the team's chances for a Natty, but instead, start thinking about how bad you have it?..... And then transfer to your 3rd school in 3 years.

I bet KJs addition lit the match and Riley's potential add is throwing gas on it.

Guys like Tre White are pretty much all looking to average 20+ mpg, which is way, way, way more than DGL got. There will be 2-3 disappointed guys, most likely.
It's hard to avoid that when you have 11-12 guys on scholarship, even if they're not highly-touted guys.. Not many players are happy getting less playing time than they envision. Maybe a guy like Jakstys, who everyone knows is a development piece, but the rest expect to play. And these days, the player will transfer at the soonest opportunity.

If we get Riley and everyone stays healthy (both big "ifs"), both White and Rogers will likely have a tough time averaging 20 mpg. Not impossible, especially for Ty who can play PF and even a bit of PG, but I'd bet against it.

Are you Monsanto's agent? I swear, any iota of rumblings on player movement or recruitment, you bring up his name.

I was curious if this would be a concern by some. There are risks as a player in the NIL world and this is one of them. A coach's job is to maximize the talent and cohesiveness. It can be a challenge with the new NIL landscape.

Yeah, this sounds like pure conjecture from a talking head on a podcast vs what NBA teams are actually saying, because in reality they wouldn’t care about any of the social media antics

The maturity on the court is a legit topic which did get a lot better this year
He looked ready for the league with some of the complaining he did to the refs!

With Riley - What would you handicap the floor, expectation, and ceiling is with this group?
extremely high but don't expect it to happen quickly. Nov. games will be for player development as well as mixing and matching by the coaching staff.

Would someone be upset enough to leave?

I agree completely, but rarely spell out everything I wonder about since my pragmatic thoughts irritate some and this site ought to be a fun place for all fans.

I will say: will we soon see the implementation of 9-10 man rosters at some P5/6 schools? With 4-6 walk-ons and redshirts? I remember Duke getting by with 8 healthy scholarship players several years ago; did they win the National Championship with K's "Eight is Enough" squad?

It seems to me that managing PT (there's a term from the past) and exposure would be much easier with a more compact roster than the full 13 that is allowed and that is honestly needed for practice and to meet the challenges of foul trouble, injury, illiness and other problems. Just a fleeting thought in June ...

If you want to discourage Riley from enrolling at AZ, just acquaint him with the Phoenix weather, including the forecast. Can't get much further from O Canada.

Silly question, perhaps, but does Jakstys himself know this? We’re all assuming he’s gonna redshirt, but is that what he’s assuming?

Knowing virtually nothing about our current roster but instead looking at the behavior of guys on our roster this past year and also at guys across the NCAA: yep, likely. I'm not sure "upset" is the right descriptor though. More like: "seeking a better opportunity."

I honestly do not know, so for those who do, hold forth: can guys who have 'committed' move on to another program in the coming weeks? I have heard that this is likely for a few guys at other programs but I haven't any idea about our program.
