Matt Norlander said before the Brazile news that Arkansas leads for Coleman Hawkins followed by Louisville and Kansas State. Kansas State just took Ugonna Onyenso

As for Riley ...

Y'all know where I stand on this ...

Bama is nothing but a headline grabber for a visit ... UK isn't serious about him in 2024 ... AZ doesn't have the role or NIL that he wants ...

All that being said ... Big O & Brad ...

Yeah, this sounds like pure conjecture from a talking head on a podcast vs what NBA teams are actually saying, because in reality they wouldn’t care about any of the social media antics

The maturity on the court is a legit topic which did get a lot better this year
That particular talking head is one of the more respected NBA draft analysts with a lot of connections

The questions about what he does are crazy, if you think he only does S&C, you're missing a lot. To name a few other items that haven't been mentioned, he creates full nutrition plans and even cooks and makes specialized smoothies for the guys when they are in Ubben. I'm pretty sure the reason Ubben has some of the best recovery equipment in the NCAA due to his work in the area. Also keep in mind, Fletch has a basketball background and is allowed full access to the team year round. I've heard this helps a lot when head coach practice time is limited. It's kind of like when @illini0440 was on the team and spent extra time coaching as a player. But hey, maybe he should just have them lift heavier weights 🤷‍♂️

I can’t help but wonder if he’s waited too late. There’s now only a handful of teams that have positional need and the remaining NIL bucks. What for the last two months has been a seller’s market now favors the buyer. Louisville might not need to toss out $2 million (or even one million) because the suitors with both the need and the means are finite.
It's possible, but with the 2 million number thrown out, if it is real or even close he hasn't waited too long. And in theory, L'Ville doesn't know what the next best offer is. I think the bigger question would be positional fit/opportunity; but would have expected his agent to be working through a list of potential suiters & following where they stand with filling out the 4 position & their need for Coleman to be the missing piece where he could maximize both money & opportunity

Things Im pretty sure of

1. Fletch has the guys lifting at the right intensity. Many upper level s+c coaches use bar speed tracking technology as opposed to the old percentages that many of us used when we were younger. They’re looking for Xm/s speed and some days that weight is heavier than others because of a myriad of factors.

2. Fletch does a ton work to help the guys improve their kinesthetic awareness. You see the tumbling etc. All that stuff creates new or strengthens pathways in the central nervous system to make guys more comfortable moving in their bodies.

3. Asymmetrically loaded exercises are incredible for building stability from the ground up in your body. Athletes need stability from the floor through their core. Basketball players need that and more because it’s an overhead sport. Stability helps unlock ability because if your body is weak and unstable in certain positions it will naturally avoid it, however if your body is strong and stable through extended ranges of motion you will be able to push it more with lower risk of injury.

4. Altgeld has posted here before on topics such as this and from my recollection kinesiology is also his speciality.

5. Fletch is a top 3 s+c coach in the business with Alan Bishop at Houston and our boy Sanderson.
OK! I'm glad that's settled. Almost everyone in this thread think Fletch is ELITE! Great, let's put it to bed.

as if anyone is asking, my take is that this is mostly noise (FWIW, I hold Vecenie in high regard). but the thing is, GMs are pretty circumspect WRT character issues for deep bench guys. do I think Hawkins would be a problem? heck no. but the maturity questions didn't help his draft status.

Yeah I think his emotions are not fitting of an end of the bench guy in the NBA. Doesn’t mean he can’t change but I understand the skepticism of investment.

Read the Kentucky forum and get a good laugh at their Will Riley topic.

The UK fans do not even want Will Riley for the most part. He will cause their faves to lose minutes, don’t play a freshman, etc. SPOILED.

The Illini fans will embrace Riley eternally.

One poster laments on Orlando Antigua being the reason that he is even looking at Illinois. It’s a good laugh.

In fairness it's not unlike this board - most want him to come and say he will start - some are concerned about minutes for everyone given how many guys they have now that all expect to play

Brea and Oweh wouldn't even start in their lineup next year if Riley went there - think about that for a moment.

can't listen at work, what is said?
Basically that he's a little too happy-go-lucky about it all; that is seen as a sign of immaturity.

Vecenie says he actually enjoys the Coleman Hawkins experience but that NBA teams just want to see a bit more maturity out of him. The specific instance he mentioned was that he said at the draft combine that he wanted to go to a football school if he transfers somewhere (as opposed to say, a place where they have a chance for a championship). I read it as they don't believe he's not taking the opportunity seriously enough.

It's an interesting question. NIL has meant that players potentially see the NBA as just an option and not the dream. Coleman has a year of eligibility left and he can just be like, cool I'll just go to this school and doesn't have to show the drive to make an NBA roster. And teams will probably only take a flyer on him rather than call his name in the first round.

We love Coleman, but Vecenie's feedback makes sense. If you're a fringe draft talent, every single thing comes into a microscope from a GM's perspective.

I think Coleman should've kept his mouth closed regarding where he would want to go to college if he wasn't going to be drafted. Especially the "football school" comments made it seem like to an outside that he's more focused on partying than going to where he can best showcase his skills for the next level.

I agree that it's super stupid to pick nits like that (see: my prof pic), but that's the game you gotta play if you want to try to be one of <600 people on this Earth privileged enough to play in the NBA next season.
