Will the NBA have any interest in changing their minimums to address this? Or are they really not concerned whether the cohawks of the world are in their eco system.

Hawkins legacy for me will be interesting

Probably one of the best players who developed steadily over his years at Illinois and next year I have no doubt will do the same

Will not miss his complaining about every call or no call

Also won’t miss him forcing things although those went down with each year

To me this round of seniors could be the last group of players under the current rules who play 3+ years at the same place. However he will not compare to the players who won’t have their names in the rafters like Trent Frazier DMFW Tyler Griffey Roger Powell or James Augustine to name a few

Werner could have committed the part about the draft projection from the tweet, and included it the linked article. Maybe he wanted to stir the pot?
I meant omitted, but auto correct knew better

Yeah, after Kylan and KJ (who absent injury are virtual locks) Ben is the most likeliest guy to start. Unless we get Riley (which IMO is very unlikely) - that would throw a monkey wrench into predicting starters.
Yeah I think those 3 are prolly pretty much locks. Kylan, Ben, Kasparas…(in that order of likelihood…but who knows?)

I feel like a lot of people are sleeping on Big Ben a little.

They instituted their minimum age rule to minimize risk of large contacts and high draft picks given to younger unproven players. Now that they can essentially use college as a viable minor league I see no reason for them to remove it.

What you’re saying is so simple I’m surprised the coaches didn’t think of it.

All you have to do is ruin the team chemistry.

“Hey, Booth, I know we told you that you’d be integral piece of this team, but you likely won’t see the floor.”

“Hey Humvee, I know we told you that you’d be an integral piece of this team, but you’ll likely only play 5 minutes a game. Coleman has the other 35.”

“Hey Boswell, I know we told you that you’d be the leader of the team, but this is Coleman’s team now.”

“Hey boosters, I know we told you that we wouldn’t need anymore money, but we now need an extra $1m-$2m to get Coleman back.”

And on top of that:

Coleman
Doesn’t
Want
To
Play
Here
Next
Year
And
We
Can’t
Force
Him
To.
Thank You ! Im kinda weirded out by these Coleman fanatics . He had a great career here. Let it go.

It’s true that anyone can leave at anytime; and goodness knows we’ve seen plenty of that. But at this point…what would you have the staff do in regards to CH? It’s over. It was apparently over before it ever started…
At some point the staff had to move on & decide which direction they were gonna go. They couldn’t wait forever to start building…

Few teams are enjoying a whole lot of continuity right now. But we have to keep trying to have a developmental component right? Maybe targeting some younger guys is a realization of that fact by the staff? Who wants to fill 10-12 roster spots EVERY year? Yikes. Maybe they think 2 years is the new 3 or 4 years. Maybe that’s partially why they took a stab at who they did

It’s great that you would rather ride with Coleman. But that undoubtedly wasn’t even an option. It sure sounds like there was more to it than just the bag 💰 .
I mean…
Coleman is cool but quirky. Brad is cool but quirky. I believe they genuinely cared about each other…but in some ways I’m surprised they made it as long as they did. Four years together is an accomplishment. Brad is a: decent, talented, intelligent, demanding, pain in the arse…and so is Coleman. That works okay when you’re on the same page. But apparently, they weren’t on the same page anymore. Sometimes things just end.

I like Coleman a lot and I’ll miss him. But 2 mil?? If that was what he wanted, I don’t blame DaddyBrad for not wanting to play that game. That’s ridiculous. (Things are going to have to course correct at some point.)The market rate for an individual can go to hell if you’re overpaying that much and sinking your chances of fielding a better overall team. Maybe that was a consideration? I dunno. This kind of rampant, runaway inflation has been bananas. And kinda hard to anticipate, no?

When Storr wanted half that from Kan$a$ they initially told him to piss up a rope. That was a what a few months ago? The whole thing is evolving by the minute…and it’s not $ustainable.
I've always couched my opinion that it's fantasyland and he has stated he's gone. I'm a graduate, my reading comprehension is very good.

I'm just pointing out the inconsistencies in the logic/arguments posted in here ( building for the future with no guarantee, money is always available)
Negotiations are, I ask for something ridiculous, you lowball, and we agree somewhere in the middle.

He could rehab, miss most of preseason, come back around bragging rights game.

Yeah I agree that's its surprising it's lasted this long with the personalities involved, but isn't that the pro game in a nutshell?

You're assuming it's all about the money. This is a 22 year old kid with the world on a string. There could be any number of reasons that Hawkins is choosing to move on. The following are all made up, but have a non-zero chance of being true:

1) All of his favorite teammates and best buds have moved on, and he doesn't want to be left behind with a bunch of new guys he's never met
2) He doesn't want to walk to classes in another Illinois winter
3) He had 2 different girlfriends in 2 different dorms. They found out about each other and will both be back in Champaign next year.
4) He's a huge football fan, and wants to experience the tailgating at a real football school.
5) He has a ton of parking tickets and knows his car will be towed if he moves back

1 how would this not also be true on a new team?

2) He doesn't want to walk to classes in another Illinois winter

2)Im sure there is plenty of online classes. It doesn't snow hard until January. He only has to stay eligible fall semester.

3) He had 2 different girlfriends in 2 different dorms. They found out about each other and will both be back in Champaign next year.

3) whole new crop of jersey chasers looking for NIL money who don't care about old flames.

4) He's a huge football fan, and wants to experience the tailgating at a real football school.

4) illini football is 'supposedly good'. Breakfast club was great tailgating when I was there.

5) He has a ton of parking tickets and knows his car will be towed if he moves back

5) some of that new nil money should be able to handle that.

Even though we all knew this was a possibility it still stinks.. You can try and put whatever positive spin on it you want but it's a small stain on a great Illini career and less than ideal optics for the program

That being said, I understand the decision and wish him the best.. just wish he would have went in the draft
I don’t see how this is poor optics for the program.

Coleman continues to explain why he does not want to come back. It’s no stain on his career either. It’s actually another feather in his cap.

Kofi was plodding lane clogger. Couldn't pass or play the high low. Couldnt hit 15ftr. Ayo was hero ball, never pass.

His lack of size has always been exposed against beefer talented guys. He had to run the offense at times and bring the ball up.

All less than ideal.

If he could play the 3,4,or 5 he could easily play with booth, humdinger, Croatian, or Morez. And still keep Ty, Lituva and Boswell on the floor in some combo.

Sharing time not being the guy who has to have a great game to win allows his body to heal and rest. Allows him to work his craft for his NBA roll player 6th man as a mismatch 3 or stretch 4. As someone else said the leap he has made year 3 to 4 with our staff and everyone getting Fletched it's a proven method of success. New team only that is guaranteed is the NIL money. Not coaching chemistry, team chemistry, fit, etc. All unknowns. No different from Maher year, or TSJ showing up. Or Busch league Harmon.

I don't see how maybe getting 2mil from Arkansas doesn't end up in the same spot next year with lots of wear on the tires playing the Swiss army knife for a team with no draft improvement.

My guess based on no inside info is Coleman told Brad I'm out regardless. Prob felt like he could get more money elsewhere if he didn't get his first choice of going to the league. The rest of just pr from both sides for us fans.

That brings the question of did we really overestimate how much money it took to be NIL rich in this new world. If Coleman wanted out to get more money, good for him. He's been great. But if we couldn't afford to keep him then that stinks but we will have to adjust as a program
Here's my guess fellow board members...our ticket price is going to go up a lot...! It's going to be more for a basketball roster than we spend for every sport other than football....(maybe over exaggeration)...but you get the point...
