The other key to that formula is Ivisic. If we had ended up with someone like Onyenso at the 5, that would have really hurt Ty. But the fact that you have to guard Ivisic out at the 3 pt line (and you must put a 5 man on him, too, because if you don’t he will feast in the post) will really help Ty.

Last year teams got away with guarding Ty with their 5 because Coleman could be effectively guarded by a 4. That shouldn’t be the case this year.
That may be true but whoever is gaurding Ty can still camp out in the lane. That was a big hindrance to our offense last year as it cut down our ability to get to the rim limiting how much we could play him.

True, they can. But it makes a big difference if the guy camping out in the lane is 6’10”-7’ or so vs maybe 6’6”.

So this year, if Ty is in, teams have to choose whether they put their 5 in the lane and just let Humrichous and Ivisic shoot over smaller guys out on the perimeter, or they could put their bigs on those guys out there and try to guard Ty inside with someone that’s much closer to his size.

I’ve been down on Ty’s offense, and he struggled against opposing 5s at times, but even I will admit that I like his outlook much more if he’s driving or posting against someone more his size.

Ty is not a traditional 3, but I think he fits pretty well alongside KJ and Humrichous. Humrichous seems pretty perimeter oriented so Ty wouldn't need to function as a true wing on offense. Ty should live off of back cuts, pick and rolls (as screener) and booty ball.
you've heard of the point forward, well how about the power three?

Ok, but why not start White, who can do all of that, and shoot better?

Ivisic and Humrichous are great shooters and Boswell, Kasparas are too. Illini offense is best when they move the ball around and everyone can shoot it well.

This team will be similar to last year's in that there is an opportunity to play whoever is hot and give folks A LOT of different looks.

I can't wait to see a White-Hum-Booth-MJ-Ivisic all big or DGL-Bos-KJ-Hum-Ivisic all shooter lineups

Where is this Will Riley info coming from?
OA was recruiting him at Kentucky, so that's the in. There's been a fair number of rumors he might reclassify and he's already booked visits to Alabama and Kentucky. Piper said on the most recent pod that we're trying to get him on campus.
Riley comes up at the 41:00 mark. Needless to say, if it's a possibility, he's absolutely a take and figure out how he fits later.

Crazy that we don’t even seem to be worried about the fact that CoHawk may come back to college and play for someone else. Kudos to the staff for that. Most other seasons it would eat up our brain space like Kofi’s situation did

One thing I’d like to see is more back cuts and overall player movement in the coming year. I’ve always felt that is something that hasn’t been a team strength overall the last few years — and something UConn does well. This roster seems to be set up well for that especially with basically two PGs likely starting in backcourt.

It really wasn't a hindrance. We had the number 3 offense in the nation. Ty was top 20 in the B10 in offensive efficiency last season and Illinois averaged 1.14ppp on possessions he contributed on 16.8% of possessions. That roughly would translate to a 77.7ppg average for Illinois per 40min worth of Ty contributing possessions, or put another way, Ty would personally have contributed to about 13.1 Illini ppg in 40 minutes of play. Those actually are pretty decent offensive numbers for a sophomore complementary piece. And that’s without talking about his rebounding or defense where he earns the team an extra 4 possessions per 40min from crashing the offensive boards alone.

As far as the nobody has to guard Ty ideology, it's overblown. Yes, having the 5 guard the paint against him worked in 2 of the 3 matchups against Edey and Clingan. A lot of players did very poorly in those matchups. But when MSU tried it with Sissoko, Ty went off. There just isn't much data outside of that to suggest you don't need to guard Ty despite him not having a jumper. And if he gets some better body control and finishing this offseason, look out.

Saying White can do everything Ty can is a bit absurd.

Tre may be very good but Ty does so many things extremely well. Like he legitimately might be the best rebounder and defender on the team this year.
And of course the real answer is the best one: let multiple good players compete for minutes!

So too Booth, Morez and Humdinger.

So too Boswell, KJ and DGL.

It's a nice mix we've got with complementary skillsets that fit the way we want to play.
