Match play makes things more fun but it’s not the best way to determine the best team most coaches would say that. Just like March madness isn’t too.

Don't follow it closely but this seems excellent. Forces a team to have some depth to win it.

Also, I thought that the higher seeded team gets to set his match up last. Other coach sets up his guys. Small will decide who goes against whom. Is that correct?

It does. But too bad Illinois doesn't get a plaque or certificate suitable for framing for its domination over 72 holes of stroke play on a tough course. Twenty two teams that are no longer in Carlsbad might agree.
