Illinois 50, Purdue 49 OT Postgame

It's time to either get a bottle in front of me to celebrate the win, or a frontal lobotomy to erase all traces from memory of our epic second half collapse.

Altmyer having a great year. For the first time in a long while qb play has been one of the biggest strengths. WRs are legit. Running backs did ok today. I think their issues stem from o line, which is looking like it’s a talent issue.

What happened to the defense? Everyone says Henry, and that might be a part (tough know WHY coaches make the calls they do), but they just don’t have the talent of the 2022 team on that side of the ball. Toughness, coaching, and discipline all have to be present to make up for that, and something in that formula was lacking in the second half.

I’ll end with glass half full….. 5-1 and Altmyer having a great season. Probably best since kittner
I noticed our weak side contain man kept biting on the fake and getting beat outside. They got several 3rd and longs because of that.

Then in the 2nd half their underneath receivers, either tight ends or running backs, were open and caught some backbreaking desperation passes.

The defense isn't as bad as they looked today. Sometimes momentum goes against you, you tighten up, the other side gets confidence and it's difficult to turn that around. Don't forget we gave up 14 points due to boneheaded plays; barring that we win 41-27, if not by more. PSU wore us down, but otherwise the D has played well this year going into today's game. They will play better next week.

I can usually play devil’s advocate on almost any topic, but going for 2 from the 18 is beyond me.
When it was happening I actually agreed with it - we were up 12 and there was no chance Purdue was going to score 3 times, so I figured the difference between 13 points up vs 12 was meaningless. What I didn’t figure is that, in 5 minutes, Purdue would have time to score two TDs while leaving us time to score again. In hindsight, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t the wrong call from a stats standpoint.

Here's my pregame assessment:
"We shall see, but I think what I'm feeling is that we've turned the corner from a team culture standpoint. Two years ago we were flying high and lost our edge and it really cost us.

This year, we're flying high and come out with a great game against Nebraska and a great start and solid game against PSU. This team seems a bit more locked in."

Of course, everyone seemed to be wrong about this. mostly a battle between those who thought we'd start slow and pull away and those who thought we'd dominate throughout.

Of course, a few who thought it would be an ugly win, but I doubt anyone thought it would be a 21 point halftime lead that would evaporate.

I didn't even watch the 2nd half (because I can't even...) and yet I'm going to say confidently no.

But as I type that out I feel like I remember one Illinois punt.
Robertson had 1 punt on the game and I don't recall when it was.

My other question was whether Purdue had 400 yards of total offense in the second half.

Something has gone screwy with the ESPN page for the game, some of the gamecast numbers aren't right and they don't have the drive-by-drive up.

Wow… a lot of really bad takes here. REEEEEALY bad takes…

5-1; will still be top 25 heading into yet another week; and we have a real chance to make a real statement next week.

Everyone would have KILLED to guarantee 5-1 heading into the Michigan game. You don’t get to take that back now that you’ve watched it play out.

GO ILLINI! BEAT MICHIGAN!

368 including OT

Assuming FOX Sports drive by drive, and my buzzed math is right.

Big ifs, if true

ETA: No punts. One down, and one fumble for Illinois otherwise all points all the time.
