Illinois 50, Purdue 49 OT Postgame

Maybe you guys can get excited about this win. I just cannot. Such a defensive bust. Seemed like the effort level was non existent on the defensive side of the ball from the beginning . I’m afraid we really got exposed today. I’m not confident in any games on the schedule. It’s not doom and gloom, it’s watching Illinois football for 55 years.
No pass defense, from what was a strength to start the year. Dont get me wrong, happy for a win, nothing to gloat about

Well obviously if you score as time expires to go down 2 because you lose the game if you don't.

And extending that logic, like, if there are 30 seconds left and you score to go up 1, that single extra point is for all intents and purposes meaningless so it's worth the low-percentage shot to get that second point that does something important for you.

It was the right decision to go for 2 at the 2 yard line because that 2nd point was meaningful, but once the penalty hits and it's a <10% shot, there's just too much time and too many permutations to throw away nearly a whole point of expected value like that. Wrong decision.
And Bret better own that when he’s questioned. Shades of those punting decisions his first season.

This was a troubling victory. Have the same feeling when the Cubs blew a big lead in the WS.

Walters is a winner, his offense play calling gave our DC issues. He is welcomed back if the time ever comes IMHO.

We are 5-1 that is unexpected and awesome. Need to win the ones we are expected to and not play with our food.

Altmeyer is statistically one of the best QBs we ever had. His QB rating, completion rate and yards/catch is top 1-3.
Walter’s is a definsive coach?

The way things are going... the Illini Footballers might need Ayo and Kofi to come back to play some D for them.

Yes, one hell-of-a recovery and comeback to remember. BUT... never should have put themselves into that position.

A win is a win is a win. Even when sometimes it feels like it isn’t.

1. The rollercoaster of emotions for anyone that watched this one from start to finish was pure insanity. I'm mad, I'm happy, I'm confused, etc.

2. If anyone had told me in August we'd be 5-1, I would have taken that all day long. Wins have not come easy for Illini football this century, so every one is a gift.

3. Coaches, this was 100% on you that this was even close. You have to fire up the troops, get them motivated, and keep them motivated.

4. Luke is a star.

That is all.

Wahhh wahhhh it’s football, if you old heads can’t see what’s happening we are going to be in a lot more trouble than you realize

As I reflect, I’ve been watching Illini sports for over 45 years, this is a football game historically we have lost. In the past it would have been an unexplainable loss that broke the team and fan base.

We won. We have Michigan next week and can win 8-9 games this year when everyone expected us to be lucky to get 6 wins.

This is a turning point, we have our coach and hopefully this trajectory helps drive more NIL to football and we upgrade our lines and continue to raise our ceiling.
Well.. 68 years here and I've seen Lucy more times than I ever wanted to... I do believe we HAVE our coach... But we're NOT quite as tough, smart and dependable as we NEED to be ... So YES, hopefully this is a turning point and we can drove more NIL into this program to continue to raise our FLOOR... We NEEDED this win, and we got it, basically willed to us by Luke Altmyer... If our defense can make some strides we can still win a couple more games...

Why does it feel like we lost when we won? I feel sick after watching that. Thankful we won with the amount of recruits we had at this game. We so desperately need a defensive talent upgrade. Wow.
I’ll take a stab…because this doesn’t exactly bode well for actual tough teams still on the schedule…and we’ve seen these mid to late season tailspins and nosedives before? (I really wanted 8…maybe 9 wins at least…but I dunno…we sure have been exposed.)

But I certainly feel your pain and understand the sentiment. I feel sick too.
