Illinois 21, Michigan 7 Postgame

Was that his call or the special team's coordinator's call?

Lunney struggled today.
I would think that call would need to be approved by BB, but would originate with the special teams coordinator

agree that it was not Lunneys best day of play calling . I’m tired of going up the gut on 1st down all the time and getting nothing .

we have a great college qb & two great wideouts and we don’t utilize those skills nearly enough . yes , it’s all about winning , but scoring 28-32 points per game will often help . I love running the ball , but running into the 1 or 2 gap doesn’t seem to work well for us

A few thoughts:

Illinois has all the attributes of a big time historic program: Our stadium, band, tailgate scene and traditions are really superior to most schools. The glaring omission has been a winning program.

I wanted us to win first and foremost so that the story told about the rededication would be perfect. In 1990, the 100th anniversary of our football program we tied for the Big Ten title. So the history was written as it should be - with a big Illini win over our historic rival.

Finally, I felt the atmosphere was reminiscent of the last Illini win over Michigan I witnessed in person - 1983. There was a confidence in the crowd and on the team that we would get this done. But like 1983 it was a low scoring affair that could have gone sideways at any time. Some of our mistakes yesterday were not unlike 1983 (Trudeau fumbled a snap inside the red zone for one thing)

Maybe Sherrone Moore will get fired perpetuating our new tradition of being that loss that breaks the camel’s back 🤪

Serious congrats on the win guys, LOVE IT! The cheaters are going to wake up unranked and that just warms my heart.

My Huskers just looked terrible yesterday but I give some credit to Indiana....that's an unexpectedly good team
it’s hard to believe they put up 56 points on you guys and you only managed 7

I’m really so surprised .

but yea , we gave up 49 points to Purdue last week . crap happens

if they finish with 6 losses , it would not surprise me at all if they fired him if they continue to look as they did yesterday - totally out coached

Curious, why are people online all angry over the throw back uni, saying they should be illegal?

jealousy? trolling? legit regulations broken?

Didn’t see if it’s been addressed somewhere.

(Fact: they were pure 🔥. I was thinking it could be our new Uni in multiple colors. It was the first time I felt Illinois had a real brand identity since Chief retired)

With 3 min to go, a friend of mine (Iowa fan, but don't hold it against him) texted me and said "game is over". I told him I prefer to not count my chickens before they've hatched, scar tissue, and how we've oftentimes snatched defeat out of the jaws of victory.

His response: "Bert is better than that".

This board knows I'm no Lunney fan. I mean, the fourth and goal play call was abysmal.

But.

You win and you call that fake punt? All is forgiven at that point. Just win.
Rewatching the game now. Fourth and one, not fourth and goal. My bad.

Yeah, beating a team with 2 losses ranked behind us probably isn’t “storm” worthy, but I get the sense the players (and maybe recruits?) love it, so I’m ok with it, and honestly, if that is our only complaint about yesterday, then I guess “storm away”!
Again - couldn’t care less what some poster on an online forum thinks about field rushing etiquette. Who the hell cares? Hope it continues to happen all the way to a 10-2 record. Love that we have people crying about field rushes now - as I said before, not too long ago we couldn’t fill half the stadium.

FIFY. 😉

That play was practiced all week for that exact scenario. I had zero doubts we would win after seeing how well that was pulled off
And that's also why having someone like Stallions spying on your practices and with drones is so detrimental to college football and against the rules. Because magical moments and plays like that fake punt don't happen. Michigan would've already been prepared for it. It's a lot easier not to lose games when your cheating ensures you know every play your opponent practices. Such a shame they didn't get that advantage today
