Yeah, after taking another look, I think you're right. Looks like we're more or less locked in to that spot for the foreseeable future.

I had to take a look back to see who I was forgetting because in my lifetime at least, Illinois has never been a consistent producer of high caliber pros. I think this explains it:

Illinois players have made 17 NBA All Star appearances. Deron Williams made 3. The other 14 happened before 1968.
that sounds about right nicolas cage GIF by Saturday Night Live

This is a super cool leaderboard. I wonder how this will be tracked in the new transfer portal era? For example, will CoHawk pro stats (assuming he goes pro) count towards the beloved, or Kansas State?

.....these are the things that keep me up at night lol
I believe this particular list contains all players who played for Illinois whether they finished their career here or not... Podz and Nunn count in our favor, for example.

I think this is the source:

I wasn’t around but is this fair to Clark Kellogg? He was all conference, drafted number 8 overall, and made the all rookie team.

That must have been LeBron level hype for him to end up on all time bust list with Telfair and Lopez.

James Wiseman was consensus #1 in 2019. Might still figure it out but I’d put Kelloggs achievements ahead of his.
Clark Kellogg was that good. TONS of knee injuries ended his career (both knees).

Tomas is not very athletic at all. He is tall and a skilled shooter and passer.

Morez and Booth completely different story. Both are very athletic.

We certainly have a lot of talent. Duke has way more.
Going to make a way Illini biased take but Kasparis is going to be the best player on the floor in an Illini upset of a hyped Duke team.

He’s a walking double digit NBA scorer right now. Rez and Big T don’t guard guys like him because he’s a not a big. Unless we’re letting him get 40 and shutting everyone else down, Booth’s height/length/athleticism combo is our best bet in theory, but we don’t even know what his role will be, minutes wise, on this team.

Tre and Ty, who I assume are gonna get their cracks at him, are too small in all likelihood. But they’re better options than Rez and Big T.
I think Flagg will be very very good but he doesn't strike me as a scorer type. Wouldn't be surprised to not see him lead Duke in scoring.

As for who on the Illini can guard him Ty is likely the best bet with his strength and the ability to get lower. Flagg is listed at 6'9, giving up 2 inches isn't a death sentence defensively.

Kwame at least played in the NBA for 12 years. Being picked #1 out of high school is a tough thing to live up to. Being picked #1 out of high school by Michael Jordan is another level altogether.

Of #1 picks in recent memory, the worst, by far…….is Anthony Bennett. Dude started 4 games in his career.
I know you said #1, but who can forget Darko? It wasnt just he was a bust, it was that he went #2 in one of the greatest and deepest drafts of all time. Lebron, Melo, DWade, Bosh just to name a few. And Darko went before all of them except Lebron; the 2nd best player to ever play the game

I think 6'9 minus 6'6 = 2.

Thanks for synopsis and corrections.

DGL athleticism is probably influencing opinion on him vs Boswell. It will be an interesting watch but DGL is a SG becoming a PG as well, so let’s see how that develops.

Shooting form. Meh. Ayo, TJ…effectiveness more important.

Fletch!
I agree they are different types of players. However, KJ is essentially a PG who can score. So we will find out whether it is more effective to play Boswell or DGL alongside KJ.

Agreed wholeheartedly.

No one can convince me that Kansas and Illinois were out there for an “exhibition” game. Both teams clearly were playing to win.
Illinois was the better team that day and that is how the season played out.

Unlikely that it isn't Flagg, but have seen some things that this guy has a fine shot...
