Agreed wholeheartedly.

No one can convince me that Kansas and Illinois were out there for an “exhibition” game. Both teams clearly were playing to win.
all exhibition means is it’s not an official game for your record .
pretty much that’s the only difference

I think 6'9 minus 6'6 = 2.
Forgot to mention the part about kids heights getting exaggerated.

Ty seems like he is legitimately 6'6 or very close to it since he looked the same height if not a bit bigger than TJ(measured 6'5.5 at the combine). Maybe Flagg is legitimately 6'9 but id bet on him being 6'8 or even 6'7.5

Ty is plenty big to guard him. His athleticism and tenacious defensive mindset will make up for any inch or two.

That’s what is so intriguing about this group. They have the to potential to throw out a lock down defensive line up and a high scoring line up and anything in between.

It doesn’t usually happen but the team has enough talent to have line ups based solely on the most beneficial match up. Exploit the mismatch.

I always remember Illini great Eddie Johnson joking about his height. He said that he was 6-9 in high school, 6-8 at Illinois, and 6-7 during his 17-year NBA career.

Who exactly is our all defensive lineup?

I’m failing to see one lineup that is obviously great defensively. Maybe hard to tell since we’ve barely seen any of these guys play.

Not complaining, but still wish Harris had come back. He was fun to watch on D.

I’ll accept it because you are the one saying it and trust your insider knowledge. Just seems way too early to declare this a sure thing top notch defensive lineup.

Probably why OP said they have the "potential" to have a lockdown lineup.

not saying it 100% is. but there is great defensive potential from that group
I agree with that evaluation.

But we won't really see a lineup like that almost ever or more likely, literally, never at least in competitive games and in an effort to actually SHUT down another team. Our scoring will be too important to run a defense-forward lineup that will struggle to score.

Yes, all of those guys can score, but as a lineup, I don't think it would be a group that would do well enough at the offensive end of the floor to be out there when it matters. Maybe I'm wrong, and maybe we'll see how things work out in this regard in early games.

All the tangibles are there. Length, quickness, high motors and tenacity. ball pressure nightmares to the opposing team.

Whether or not that line up specifically is used is not the point. The point is the team has the flexibility to match up with almost any opposing line up to either shut down their best players or to find offensive mismatches.

I'd bet the opposite. We tend to exaggerate our players' heights a lot. In recent years, Ayo and Coleman come to mind.

That said, I think Ty could do a reasonable job on him defensively. 3 inches is not that big of a deal.

You also to consider Flagg is supposedly a superb defender in his own right.

I actually think the Illini seem to exaggerate the same as everyone else(less in some cases).

Ayo measured 6'3.5 barefoot and 6'5 in shoes at the combine and was listed at 6'5 on the Illini. Coleman measured 6'8.5 barefoot at the combine and was listed at 6'10. So both those guys got an inch and a half which is pretty typical of an exaggeration.

TJ measured 6'5.5 and was listed at 6'6 so that's pretty fair. Domask and Rodgers are both listed at 6'6 and look about the same as TJ so i doubt there is much exaggeration for Ty.

Wing span is as important as height, particularly defensively. Don’t ever remember seeing nos for current players but would be interested in them.

Absolutely. Long wingspan is pretty much equivalent to people (over) using "length." On our team, not sure who stands out in the regard. Booth maybe? On last year's team, Danja had super long arms.

Ty may very well be able to defend Flagg respectably. Ty did struggle with quicker gaurds but Flagg may not be able to get by him as easily.

Illinois players have made 17 NBA All Star appearances. Deron Williams made 3. The other 14 happened before 1968.
iirc Eddie Johnson and Nick Anderson get mentioned as among the best to be overlooked as All Stars.

I would include Derek Harper, Kendall Gill, and Ken Norman.
