Pitching in general is a big problem this year. The Cubs are good but would be elite with a somewhat reliable rotation. Losing Stroman hurts even though he was struggling. Steele is the only starter that I feel good about. Taillon and Hendricks can be good but are inconsistent, and Smyly has been pretty consistently bad the last few months.

Feels like the chances of winning the division are slipping away, the Brewers are red hot and we’re not keeping up. Unless that changes very soon, it will likely come down to the wild card race.

Feels like the series with them next week is do or die for the division.

Do I remember correctly there were folks around here who at one point in time thought the Cubs might hit 100 losses this year?

I was not one of them, although I did predict 74 wins. That prediction is not aging well. I didn't think Bellinger would have the year he's having, I didn't think the starting pitching would be all that good (like it was in the first half). I didn't think they would find a closer. I own all of those horrible predictions.

I just hope they make the playoffs, even if for one game...

I've got my over 75 1/2 win wager ticket burning a hole in my pocket.

I thought we would be competitive and possible a 500 club. Hopefully i’m way off.

Heading into the season, I thought they were about a 83-win team. Most professional projectors had the Cubs in the 77-78 win range.

As of June 8, they’d just gone on a 14-29 stretch, were 10 games below .500, and on pace for a 94-loss season. I don’t think it was particularly unreasonable at that point to be pretty pessimistic despite the fact that the underlying numbers suggested the Cubs were a better team than their record showed.

They’ve gone 40-24 since then.

I had a post in this thread that they'd win between 75-80. Their rough stretch mid-season had me hoping they'd sell, but then they got hot.

Y’all, what are we gonna do? Do we have enough starting pitching to finish this thing? I feel good with Steele starting. Thaillon, I feel ok, not too comfortable. the professor has zero room for error throwing his 82 mph fastball. Assad is actually throwing pretty well. Smylie, almost unplayable.
Convince me we have enough starting pitching.

A March 30 post I said that I was actually a little excited about this season. I told our family text group that is titled "Go Cubs" that I was cautiously optimistic that we might sneak into a wildcard spot.
They spent a little money and there are 3 wildcards, not a huge stretch.

Enough starting pitching for what?

Do they have enough to eke into a wild card spot? Yes.

Do they have enough to win a 3-game wild card series? Yes.

Do they have enough to do anything else? No. Probably not.

they might make the playoffs , but won’t go far in the postseason on talent alone .

they will need a lot of luck

it’s possible , just not probable

Really no difference between being the worst division winner and the first wild card is there?

No not much.

I think the Braves might be significantly better than the Dodgers this year. So being able to duck the Braves one more round and give someone else a chance to upset them in the divisional round has its benefits. But if you do have to face the Braves, you’d have a better chance in 5 games than in 7.

Looks like 2021 1st round pick Jordan Wicks will make his MLB debut on Saturday, pushing Assad to Sunday.

Not sure who goes down. If the Cubs really think Thompson is fixed, he’ll probably stay up and Cuas will go back down.

My first reaction was Wisdom but I then remembered you can't have more than 13 pitchers.
