[ W ] #61!

12 consecutive saves for Adbert.
My over 75 1/2 win bet is starting to look good.

Let's see if Robert plays against the Brewers today. I'm surprised they're not holding back Cease until Tuesday.

Rough day today. Not only did the Brewers win, the Marlins scored 5 in the 9th to beat the Yankees 8-7, knocking us out of the wild card for the time being. At least the Reds lost game 1 of their double header.

Next three series are against 3 of the 4 worst teams in the AL, followed by the Pirates. Meanwhile the Brewers have to play the Dodgers and Rangers on the road. We need to take advantage.

Not that it cost them the game but I don't like the idea of resting starters before a day off. I can see it for a day game following a night game but I don't know how much it helps/hurts to get that 2nd day.

I get what you are saying, but you never know what kids of bumps and bruises these guys are playing through. Especially in a tight race. If you can sneak in an extra day for a guy who's a bit banged up, it can be a good thing.

Merryweather should never be allowed to pitch at Wrigley again.

They diagnosed Stroman with torn rib cartilage. Wonder how long he’s been dealing with that?

No time table for his return. It would be pretty miraculous if he’s back for the end of the regular season.

Unbelievably bad timing.

he's not been his normal self for awhile.
time for someone else to step up.
you can still get help now via trades, but they just cant play in the playoffs , correct ?

Since 2019, only players who have not been on the injured list or on a 40 man roster all season can be traded after the deadline. You won’t find much help. Hopefully, someone steps in and steps up.
Sounds like Smyly will have first crack at winning a starting job back.

edit: Smyly just came out to pitch, so who knows…

Unless he miraculously comes back and pitches lights out, this almost guarantees that he'll exercise his option and be back next year.

I would be extremely skeptical of that.

21M for one year is the opt-in. Even if his health has teams freaked out, he could get more than that on a super short term deal.

It doesn't help his market though, that much is true.

It’s going to be fascinating to watch. All sorts of variables are going to affect what kind of deal he can get. Can he make it back before the season is over or during the postseason? If he does will he be effective? Is he looking at surgery? Will he be ready to go to begin 2024?

Likely his 2024 player option is more than he’d get for a single season contract if he hits free agency. But it’s less guaranteed money than he’d get for a multi-year deal. How much less is the question. If he’s looking at 2 years and $28 million, he should go back to the Cubs. If he’s looking at 4 years and $76 million, he should go to free agency.

The risk Stroman runs is that he declines his option, hits the free agent market and then can’t pass a physical. Unfortunately for the Cubs, if Stroman exercises his option, it’s probably a bad sign for his health in 2024.

Ironically, the risk of this precise scenario is one of the reasons Stroman’s return in a trade was likely to be disappointing had the Cubs decided to unload at the deadline.

EDIT - yes, I am anal enough to edit when I screw up effect/affect.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. Seems like an extremely odd injury for a pitcher. They have no timeframe for his return, which likely indicates he's done for the year. (Just an assumption. I hope I'm wrong)
It definitely alters his market... He won't be getting the type of contract he was on pace for in the first half. If this rib thing lingers well into the off-season it greatly increases the chance he opts in.
If you look at the contracts of guys who are fairly comparable to Stroman last year (Robbie Ray, Kevin Gausman), The AAV they signed for is 22-23 million a year. I'm not sure Marcus gets a lot more than 21 next year anywhere else... I guess it kind of depends on who else is available, but the opt in isn't far off market value IMO.
Staying with the same trainers/doctors/coaches, in the same city might be enough incentive to make up any difference.

There’s also Stroman’s very public, and I think genuine, stated interest in remaining in Chicago. I think if his agent says that taking the option and hitting free agency in 2024 is likely even money with going directly to free agency in 2023, Stroman takes the option.

Looking back, I sure wish the Cubs and Yankees could have hooked up on a deal at the trade deadline.....as was widely speculated at the time (particularly with Stroman now on the shelf). Gerrit Cole would have really elevated our starting pitching over the last two months. /s

(Laughing now at the Yankees, who are on the verge of finishing under .500 this season; and to think they were so arrogant to believe we should have given them Bellinger!)
