Chicago Cubs 2024

You never knew it then but if this were made before the season started it would be the Cubs getting 2 prospects, not giving 2 prospects........AND they would be in Wild Card contention today, buying instead of probably selling.

That said, I wish him luck but if Morel turns into Schwarber.....

I'll miss Morel, he was a fun guy.

I'll miss Bigge because his name is Bigge.

I'll miss Johnson because he was almost a Cub

I don't know if the cubs manager is dumb, stubborn or is just trying to sabotage the cubs. In the fifth inning he leaves Hendricks in to retire NO ONE and proceed to give up SIX runs, the entirety of the scoring, before replacing him. six batters, six runs.

And the cubs offense? 3 singles and a double...

Could it be any more pathetic?
average exit velocity on those hits was roughly 67 mph

I like both the trades the Cubs have made so far. Didn’t give up much in either trade. Pearson is a lottery ticket type pick up. If Cubs can help him add an effective pitch(es) to his arsenal, they’ll really have something. Not holding my breath that it will happen, but worth the gamble.

I’ve never been a big Morel fan. He strikes out too much for me and often looked like he was up there with no plan. Paredes isn’t immune to the swing and miss, but nothing like Morel. I believe they’re both about same age and Paredes Is actually a 3B. Not going to remind anyone of Brooks Robinson, but also won’t remind them of Morel in field either.

But wait............

* Getting healthy
* Trading for a 3B
* Finally showing a little pop on Offense

I get the trade, but I hate seeing Morel go. I firmly believe he'll be a 30-40 HR guy one day.

Does anyone remember over the winter when Bruce Levine was saying that the Cubs could get Juan Soto straight up for Morel if they wanted? :ROFLMAO:
It probably sounds silly to say, but I sorta feel like people aren't fully appreciating how great Juan Soto truly is. I tend to judge players based on walks. Anyone who walks a ton is a great player.

It's why Eddie Yost should be in the HOF, IMO. He played in an era when walks weren't as valued as they are today. He had a higher career OBP than George Brett, Tony Gwynn, and Rod Carew. Over a 13 year stretch from 1948-1960, he had an exact .400 OBP. There aren't a lot of guys who can claim that accomplishment. There are good arguments against him as a HOFer, but in my book he belongs.

He's on pace for :

27 HR
77 RBI
.199 BA
.302 OBP

He's also a liability defensively.

He might blow up into a superstar, but they couldn't put their eggs in his basket again in 2025.

This move does signify that either Shaw or Hoerner will be the odd man out going forward.
Certainly could mean Hoerner or Shaw get traded, but I’d expect Cubs to take a page out of the TB playbook and mix and match in the infield based upon matchups — at least for next year. I see Shaw as possible utility guy next year. He’s played 3 positions this year. Hoerner can play SS. Parades can play 3 positions, Busch has been OK against lefties but hasn’t shown any real power against them.

Cubs can feel free to trade Hoerner as far as I'm concerned. Trade him before Jed throws him 100 million.

I was responding to Chuck Nuggets who's thinking he'll turn into a 30-40 HR guy. He may do it this year. I agree with your post but hard to say what happens with Shaw or Hoerner. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hoerner traded.

Neely (Yanks #22 prospect) looks interesting. Has 255 Ks in 160 innings in minor league ball. No idea what is in his repertoire, but seems like he could be at worst a middle reliever and has closed some. Cowles appears to be organizational depth despite being Yanks #29 prospect.

This trade is a little like a the Effross-Wesneski trade in that the Cubs are giving up a little certainty for a little more upside and a few more years.

There’s a non-zero chance this trade goes like that one with Neely being the better pitcher by the end of this season.

Neely 20 saves in 24 opportunities in the minors. Infielder's stats look pretty average.

Edit: Neely 6'8" IIRC. I don't know if that was with or without shoes. Growth plates are likely closed.

Neely any relation to Lunchbucket Ed Neely who used to grab rebounds for K-State back in the day ?

pretty sure Ed earned an NBA paycheck for quite awhile incl a stint with the Bulls
