I don’t understand trading something as valuable as a second round pick for a guy you could sign in the off-season if you really want him. Is it worth the pick just for an exclusive three month negotiating window with his agent? Getting him on the roster now doesn’t make you a playoff team. Maybe I’m missing something.
Maybe they think it’s their best chance at recruiting him? If he’s a FA, he might not give them serious consideration?
I really don’t know… I keep trying to figure out the plan… maybe that’s my problem… I’m attempting to apply logic where it doesn’t apply.

Montez will cost more in open free agency than they can sign him to now if for no other reason than the Bears have the leverage of the franchise tag to use. Plus Poles almost assuredly has some kind of contract framework with the agent already...whether they are just waiting for a physical or it takes until January like with Roquan and the Ravens. A bad case would be he doesn't sign and you get a third round compensatory pick in 2025 for him, but that is probably a final nail in the GM coffin.
The Bears pass rush is awful and there are no other stud free agent or stud Top 5 picks at DE to pick up for next year, so you needed to do something. Otherwise who else will be the Bears DE's next year, since everyone they have now on the roster at that position for 2024 is no good? Who else would you rather have as a 2024 starting DE?

I see it as trading a valuable pick for a guy who will mess up their draft pick and then play elsewhere next season. I envy you guys with faith that it will turn out for the best.

I'm trusting they had an agreeable framework for a deal...I heard his presser today and it didn't sound like he was planning on leaving or being a rental...but who knows because we are a work in progress...we can always tag him, but we may need that for Jaylon...jmo

He wouldn't have been available in the off-season. Whoever traded for him was going to either sign him or use the franchise tag on him, just as the Bears will do. There were other teams involved in trading for him and they weren't going to pay that price for a rental.

He probably wouldn't have even considered Chicago otherwise... Now that Ryan has a captive audience, he needs to close.

4 years 98 million for Sweat! So glad we have him signed...

Position below Myles Garrett, on average yearly...#5

Bears offense looked pretty good for most of the 1st half. Bears D about how I figured they would be against the New Orleans offense. Game could be one that ends up being about who has the ball last.

Probably true...but we have a decent backup for sure...we also have another shot...

I doubt it...wait till Fields struggles next...it's just human nature...

Some sports analysts and Bear fans are mesmerized by Fields athletic ability. And there is no doubt that he has some. But Fields has just not shown himself to be a good field leader who inspires confidence and steadiness in his team.

Bagent does not have the physical tools of Fields. But already in his short stint at QB starter... he has in fact brought a steadier leadership ability than Fields has shown in a longer sample size. Yes, the turnovers by Bagent are too many. But remember that this guy just became an NFL starter and defenses are throwing all kind of pressure on him. It’s too soon to write Bagent off as too turnover prone.

Bagent may yet have more real upside in his overall game than Fields. We just don't know yet.

i have to disagree. Bagent’s arm is very limiting on his potential & the type of offense he can run.
He is composed and a decent athlete, but he can’t push the ball downfield w/o it hanging in the air a long time. Give him a running game and a positive game script, and you’ve got a chance, but you can say the same about Fields.
Fields is insanely talented. His upside is clearly better. Whether or not he will ever harness it all is another story.

Bagent is going to stick in the league for a long time as a backup, but he’s not a “plan A” talent.

If I’m Ryan Poles, I‘m not staking my career on either of these guys.
