Flus better make some adjustments at half...for Bagent to have a chance...

The QB hasn't been the problem and we are getting blown out. Weird how that works.

We already had our joy earlier in the day with the Illini win. Asking the Bears to follow suit was too much to ask.

It's good that you noticed that. QB was looking good enough to be competitive and was settling in but the Bear Defense (WHAT Defense)? decided to get stuck somewhere on the 405 Freeway or just left altogether and went over to Marina Del Rey.

This was a lousy thing to do the Bear QB who is still finding his way into the starting role and was playing on National TV. Once again, the Bears played looking like they were the 2023 White Sox.

I am glad I don’t have to decide what to do with the QB situation this team has. Do you trade Fields and draft a QB to compete with Bagent? Do you sign Fields to an extension at a reasonable number and still draft a QB? Do you sign Fields to a reasonable extension and pass on a QB and get another haul of picks and players perhaps? I am not sure I could argue against any of these scenarios right now.
It will probably clear up a bit as the season goes along but what a dilemma.

The Bears have to decide at the end of the season whether they’re going to pick up Field’s 5th year option. At this point, I can’t imagine they’ll do that. He’ll likely be a FA after 2024. If he has an amazing 2024, the Bears would still be able to franchise tag him and negotiate an extension from there. But unless he has a 2024 season that would justify him being paid like a top-6 or -8 QB in the league, 2024 will be his last year on the Bears.

So there’s no real need to trade him. He and Bagent can compete to be the caretaker QB next year while the next first round QB sits for a year. Then Fields will be let loose and Bagent can be the backup from there.

Fields has had enough time to show what he's got. And the fact that big questions around him remain actually settles this - the Bears have to move on. Bagent at the very least has the makings of a solid backup NFL QB... and he could be even more that that. He will settle that issue in the future. So the Bears have to select a top QB in the draft and let he and Bagent duel it out. As for Fields... he does have a place in the NFL but it's not at QB.

And maybe the Bears could also get a few guys who want to play Defense?

According to ESPN, Jaylon Johnson has requested a trade and the Bears are allowing him to seek one out with another team before the deadline today.

All that cap room and being unable/unwilling to extend their good young CB is certainly a thing. Begs the question as to what the plan is here.

He’ll probably get them a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

D’onta Foreman and Darnell Mooney might get them 6th or 7th round picks. They might not be worth trading if they’re still trying to give their young quarterbacks experience. I can’t imagine any of the other pending free agents will net any interest from other teams.

If the Bears have the first pick, they take Caleb Williams and trade Fields.
If the Bears have the second pick, they take a QB and trade Fields. Probably Drake Maye, but also scout Penix, Mccarthy, Ewers, Sanders.
If the Bears have something like picks 5 and 7 it gets interesting because there is no guarantee the QB's left will be better than Fields. Probably keep Fields and reload around him.
Whoever has the first pick isn't going to trade it unless Caleb Williams demands a trade like Eli Manning.

Montez Sweat for our second-round pick. They'd better have a handshake deal with his agent already...
I don’t understand trading something as valuable as a second round pick for a guy you could sign in the off-season if you really want him. Is it worth the pick just for an exclusive three month negotiating window with his agent? Getting him on the roster now doesn’t make you a playoff team. Maybe I’m missing something.

Here's what you're missing: What this means is the Bears are going for it ALL! They are just four games behind the Lions with eight to play. No problem there... lots of time! Vikings and Packers are fading away. 'Bears Weather' will be settling in and Bear opponents will have no chance against the New Monsters of the Midway.

(Do I even bother need to add a Sarc tag?)
