2024 Summer Olympics

Few different schedules to post here...

Remainder of U.S. Men's soccer team group stage schedule:
-Saturday, Noon CT, USA Network: vs. New Zealand
-Tuesday, Noon CT, USA Network: vs. Guinea

Remainder of U.S. Women's soccer team group stage schedule:
-Sunday, 2:00 PM CT, USA Network: vs. Germany
-Wednesday, Noon CT, E! Network: vs. Australia

U.S. Men's basketball team group stage schedule:
-Sunday, 10:15 AM CT, NBC: vs. Serbia
-Wednesday, 2:00 PM CT, USA Network: vs. South Sudan
-August 3, 10:15 AM CT, NBC: vs. Puerto Rico

On a side note, South Sudan may be one of the better underdog stories in this year's Olympics given what's gone on in that country in the last decade. Luol Deng is president of their basketball federation and is an assistant coach on this team's staff.

Overly dramatic much? It's the Olympics. Those who want to watch it will watch it whether she's there or not. The only difference between these and other recent Olympic games is that the group stage games will air at a reasonable hour here in the states compared to what they have in the past couple cycles.
It's true though.

I disagree.

The Olympic Committee places high value on team integration and familiarity, due to the short turnaround time to the Olympics. CC is not only inexperienced at this level (not insurmountable) but wasn't able to participate in recent lead up games due to being in the FF (not a 'fault' but is a fact preventing her from playing and familiarizing herself with others).

The Committee has publicly stated there was a great deal of concern re dealing with fan reaction to both leaving CC off the team  and having her on the bench with limited playing time if on the team (because that's the reality of what her role would have been).
Despite all that she still deserved to be on the team. She has raised the awareness of women's basketball in America to a level it has never seen before. The cop out that it would be a distraction for her to be on the team because her fans would be upset that she wasn't playing as much as they would like is a load of bs. She should have been given the honor of being selected for the team USA. With her having more fans than any other women's basketball player in the world I would think they would want to capitilize on it. The WNBA sure as hell has prospered more because of her. I have never watched a WNBA game before this year and I also found myself following Iowa women's team in the tournament. Believe me not an Iowa fan but she is truly a generational talent. I would have watched the women's Olympic team too if she was on it but not now. Just like every other Olympics in my lifetime.

Wrong in both conclusion and reasoning. The Olympics is not a popularity contest, it is a sporting competition. CC will be in the league a long time, and earn her way onto the team next time around.

The MBA's running the marketing teams should have no voice in selecting the athletes...and I can't believe the names asking for that to be the process. Not to mention the fact that it's because of the growing popularity of women's basketball and soccer the drove CC's performance to be seen so widely. CC didn't invent women's sports, she's just an exemplary athlete coming into a growing system at the right time.

But selecting athletes for the Olympics already has a process. It is guided by the coaches and qualies, which is the right way to do it. The goal is to win the gold medal, not sell the most Pepsi.

So this was the first opening ceremony with rain since Helsinki in 1952.

I guess we do have to remember the Helsinki Episode and how that turned out for this opening ceremony . . .

It's true though.

Is it though? As others have pointed out, the Olympic team is about putting the best team out there. Not the one who will get the most views on social media. And let me ask you this. Considering she hasn't had any sort of extended time off since probably last October, is it really the worst thing in the world for her to get the next couple of weeks off to reboot and refresh?

So what’s everyone’s favorite sport to watch that they only watch during the Olympics?

For me, it’s probably team handball. A rough combination of basketball and indoor soccer. Water Polo is probably second.

My favorite Olympic sport is actually a winter sport - Snowboard cross. It's the one where snowboarders all race down the hill together. It's kind of like a NASCAR sprint on snow. For summer Olympics, my favorite event is the 4X100 and 4X200 in track. A lot going on in a frantic scramble.

Love mens and women's water polo, but swimming, wrestling, and hoops too.

USA off to a hot start as Walker Zimmerman scores in the 12th minute. USA leads 2:0.
This was going to be the least competitive/challenging of the three group matches for the US. I'm glad they are doing exactly what was expected. The next game against Guinea will tell a lot. It will be competitive, but a game the US should win if they play well. Win that game and play well in the first knockout game (regardless of score), and I'll be happy with the Olympics experience for this group.

Even with the loss to France, I still would have thought they would make the knockout and be in contention for a bronze medal.

FIFA have deducted the Canada women's soccer team 6 points and 3 coaches, including the head coach who was already removed, have been banned from soccer for one year as a result of the drone spying scandal.

Peacock has a subchannel during this year's Olympics called Gold Zone. Basically an Olympic version of the NFL Redzone channel where they jump around to different events and go live to medal matches in some of the individual events like fencing and judo. And for those of you like me that like Redzone, both Scott Hanson and Andrew Siciliano are among the studio hosts for Gold Zone.

Couple other stories from today:

-IOC has apologized to South Korea as they were announced as being the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" (also known as the official name for North Korea) during yesterday's opening ceremony.
-One of the Italian flagbearers apologized to their wife in an Instagram post after his wedding ring slipped off and fell into the Seine during the parade of nations.
