2024 Summer Olympics

NBC just showed the 100 meter breaststroke men's final from earlier today. Absolutely insane finish. The top 3 finished within .02 seconds of another, including a tie for 2nd. The top 4 finished within .08 seconds of each other and the top 6 were within .29 seconds of each other.
And an American, Nic Fink, was one of those who tied for 2nd! 🇺🇸

I think the women’s soccer flop LESS than men’s soccer
Do you mean show them up like they're a relative bunch of punters? Well, they've been doing that for awhile now.

Re: the CC conversation - the Laettner case is an example of doing it wrong, not helping the team, and providing a fine example of how not to do it.

I dare anyone to watch the reactions of the US men's gymnastics team after they won the bronze medal (the first US team medal in men's gymnastics since 2008) and come away from that wanting to complain and feel negative. Can we bottle the energy those guys had? That was awesome to see.

Enjoying rugby. Admire Kristi Kirshe. Think Bears should sign her. Matt Suhey type. Plus she would be a bargain, McCaskeys: she doesn't need a helmet or pads.

US women lost to New Zealand, but can win bronze.Go USA and Kristi!

Thoughts: do we really need or want three-on-three basketball at the Olympics? I prefer six-on-six table tennis. Or 1,500 meter hammer throw relay. (Just like track, hand-offs are critical).

Your idea of a funny Olympic sport? I always thought angel-making in the snow should be an event. I was very good at it when I was a kid. Almost went pro.

One more summer sport: five meter inner tube sprint. Team would spin me around like crazy and send me on my way. Deduction in points if I said "ouch" when I was nearly impaled on valve stem.. We were a tough breed. Almost went pro again. And bluegills nibbling skin flakes off my legs. Cool northern Illinois man-made lake memories.

Sorry, and good day to all of you.

This one's easy - three-legged races. I'd love to see how these elite athletes would handle something like that!

USA defeated Guinea earlier today 3:0 and make the knockout round.

Here's the bracket for the men's soccer tournament:

France-Argentina
Egypt-Paraguay
Morocco-USA
Japan-Spain

The USA-Morocco match is at 8:00 AM CT on Friday. NBC's Olympic page shows it only on Peacock but the U.S. Soccer website shows it's also on USA Network.

So far, I'm really happy with the US men's performance. They didn't play that badly against France, took care of business against New Zealand, and today really surprised me in a good way. I just want them to play well Friday. A good performance regardless of score would make me feel awfully good about this tournament all things considered. If they were to win on Friday, they'd get six games no matter what and I'd be extremely happy with the overall results.

Egyptian sabre fencer Nada Hafez announced on her Instagram account that she was seven months pregnant while competing in this year's Olympics. She won her first match before losing in the Round of 16 in her section of the draw.

Illinois and Texas A&M Give a Tennis Lesson to Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz
The most glamorous doubles pairing on Earth gets an Olympic thumping from U.S. duo Rajeev Ram and Austin Krajicek, longtime doubles savants with college tennis roots
.....Krajicek won a doubles national championship while playing for Texas A&M. Before turning professional, Ram was part of an undefeated University of Illinois team which won the 2003 national championship.....

US men's soccer trails Morocco 1-0 early in the second half. Morocco's goal came via a correctly-called penalty in the first half.

Let's hear it for Algerian women's boxing! I feel real bad for the Italian boxer who withdrew. Sad but wise move. (If what I've gathered is true and accurate).

P.S. I used to love Andy Kaufman inter-gender wrestling.

After the US soccer game, I went back to watching the Peacock sport-specific replays. Men's decathlon is one of the things I have on in the background.

It amazes me how these decathletes (and heptathletes on the women's side) can 1) be so well-rounded in such a wide variety of events and 2) still look so "different" compared to those who specialize in these events.

The first decathlon event is the 100 meters. These guys running it are still REALLY fast and unbelievable athletes, but it's still so different watching these bigger guys appear to be "lumbering" compared to a sprinting specialist like Noah Lyles. The decathlete times are in the 10.75 to 10.25 range - still crazy fast, but a good 0.5 to 0.9 seconds "slower" than what the 100m sprinters will run.

Not trying to make this a dig at decathletes or anyone for that matter. It's just interesting to watch given I really only watch track and field at the Olympics.

And I will say that an event like the Olympics shows the good things about a streaming platform like Peacock. I'm finding it really easy to switch back and forth between live events and replays, and between various sports. For a Friday working from home without a lot going on work-wise, having the variety of feeds and sports is really a good thing.
