2024 Summer Olympics

So what’s everyone’s favorite sport to watch that they only watch during the Olympics?

For me, it’s probably team handball. A rough combination of basketball and indoor soccer. Water Polo is probably second.
Water polo is truly an underappreciated sport, at least from an effort perspective. You hear all the time how soccer players are the world's best athletes, running almost all the time for 90 minutes. But WP players are either swimming or treading water the entire time, or trying to shoot with one hand while treading with the other. Incredible effort.

And that game is ROUGH. My son and I were watching a game, and he said it looks like everyone is trying to drown their opponents.

My favorite Olympic sport is actually a winter sport - Snowboard cross. It's the one where snowboarders all race down the hill together. It's kind of like a NASCAR sprint on snow. For summer Olympics, my favorite event is the 4X100 and 4X200 in track. A lot going on in a frantic scramble.
I actually like the swimming relays. Kind of the same thing as you mentioned, but all else equal I like watching swimming a little more than track and field (or as they call it elsewhere in the world, athletics).

Track and field, followed by swimming. I used to enjoy boxing, but the US isn't that competitive any more

Just watched the replay of the men's swimming 4 x 100 freestyle relay. AMAZING third leg by Hunter Armstrong to lead to a pretty sizable American win.

Springfield native Ryan Held, who was part of the same relay that won gold in Rio with some guy named Michael Phelps, was part of that relay in the preliminary heat earlier today but didn't swim in the final.

FIFA have deducted the Canada women's soccer team 6 points and 3 coaches, including the head coach who was already removed, have been banned from soccer for one year as a result of the drone spying scandal.
It amazes me that FIFA acted so quickly and the punishment is severe

FIFA has its flaws and I am not sure if they would have handed the same punishment for Brazil or France on the men’s side if they did something similar

Imagine if the NCAA did that to scUM last year

Part of why they did it so quickly is so that Canada could appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

I have been really impressed with youtubeTV and their multiviews. Seems like NBC is providing some of the extra Peacock feeds to YoutubeTV for free for the multiview. Watching 4 events at once is great.

too bad that court didn’t exist for our 1972 basketball team coached by Hank Iba

for anyone not old enough to know how our team got jobbed by the refs in the gold medal game vs the Russians , I suggest you watch it on youtube
quite possibly the best example or corrupt referees

Doug Collins was on that team , which was all college players then . Tom Burleson was too.
not sure who the others were .

Is it though? As others have pointed out, the Olympic team is about putting the best team out there.
You sure?

You do know what the reason was that he was included over Isaiah, right? Or are you just trying to do some revisionist history here?
Laettner was not included because he was better than Isaiah or because Isaiah was left off. Both of those choices were politically motivated. They wanted Michael, that is the reason Isaiah was left off the roster! Laettner was on the team because they wanted to leave a spot open for a college player.

While the roster mainly consisted of the NBA's top stars, they left the final spot open for a college player. Among those in consideration was Shaquille O'Neal. However, they ended up selecting Duke star Christian Laettner instead.

Part of why Team USA went with Laettner is because he was the biggest star in college basketball at the time and was a year older. In 1992 he led Duke to their second-straight national championship while averaging close to 22 points per game.

As the more proven player with the potential to be a star, Laettner seemed like the obvious choice. In the end, it really didn't matter who they picked. Neither player was getting playing time over the array of star players in front of them.

There will always be people who are snubbed or felt they were, but don’t act like the roster construction isn’t political as well!

Didn’t the women’s Olympic team get beat by a group of players who were snubbed (including Arike Ogunbowale, Caitlin Clark, and Angel Reese)!
