Your Big Ten Basketball Dislike Rankings

Sorry, I mixed that up with Ohio St. My bad.
I think PSU broke our home win streak though. Might have been 2006 though. So you still get partial credit from me.

Also think PSU forced me to watch a game with final scores in the 30’s that we lost.

we also lost to the 3 times in 22-23, which shouldn’t happen and some how we’ve lost 4 in a row and we lost 6 in a row in the dark days of 2016-2019.

On the other hand, they may have inspired our foray into booty ball last season.

But you talked me into it, I hate them again.

I think you forgot Indiana!!! My signature line used to be “All the trees in Illinois lean east ‘cause Indiana sucks.”

I genuinely think that if I had one sporting event in my lifetime where I could use the old "Men in Black" thing where they flashed the light and you forget that event ever happened, it would be 38-33.

Someone should have been looking for peach baskets in the bowels of AH/SFC during the course of that game.

one of the worst, if not the worst , games I’ve seen us play since my frosh year in 1979

I agree with @OnlyOrange that when you started following the Illini, will have a lot to do with where you put them. For example, I really started following College Basketball in 1979, and my first memory of the Illini was Eddie Johnson beating Michigan St and Ervin Johnson. So here is my list.

Despise
Indiana - Bobby Knight, need I say more
Iowa - Bruce Pearl aka Satan
Michigan - 1989 Final Four

Dislike (mostly due to being a pretty good team in my memory)
Purdue
Michigan State
Wisconsin
Ohio State

Little Brother that is annoying
Northwestern

Mostly don't care but seem like they always play us tough
Penn St.
Maryland

Meh
Minnesota
Nebraska
UCLA
Oregon
USC
Washington
Rutgers
I've read through and am in line iwth segmentation. Only comment I can add is my general shock at the lack of mentions regarding the Sampson and the IDKWTI era. I still think that recruiting flip put us back a significant amount.

I'm pretty sure that the hatred of Bobby Knight is much more than the dislike of Sampson and IDKWTI. Knight was at Indiana for many years, whereas Sampson and that kid were only at Indiana for a couple of years.

This exercise made me realize how some of my feelings have really evolved from my time as a student to many years later:

GENUINELY DISLIKE/RIVALS
Iowa
Indiana
Northwestern (hate this here but if we hadn’t dominated them for so long fans would list them pretty high up. I think this is where they belong)

"HISTORIC" ANIMOSITY
Michigan
Purdue

"SPECIFIC" ANIMOSITY
Maryland
Penn State

GENERALLY RELEVANT
Michigan State
Ohio State
Wisconsin

VERY LITTLE FEELING
Minnesota
UCLA
Oregon
USC
Washington

BEGRUDGINGLY LIKE
Rutgers
Nebraska

GENUINELY HATE
Iowa
Indiana

ALWAYS ANNOYING
Maryland
Northwestern
Penn State
Wisconsin
Minnesota

USUALLY DONT THINK ABOUT THEM BUT WHEN I DO THEY ARE ANNOYING
Nebraska

ANNOYING BC THEY'RE HISTORICALLY "DIRECT COMPETITORS" NOT BC THEY'RE ACTUALLY ANNOYING
Michigan State
Ohio State

APATHETIC
UCLA
Oregon
USC
Washington
Rutgers

BEGRUDGINGLY DONT HATE
Michigan
Purdue

Funnily enough a lot of my feelings on opposing teams come from dealing with visiting fans while I was bartending on campus during school.

Nebraska - Incredibly friendly and wholesome fanbase that tipped very well. No bad feelings. Traveled super well.

Iowa - definitely felt like a rivalry during the Garza years but their fans were also super friendly.

Michigan - Not overly friendly, came across as a bit pompous which kind of matches my feelings towards the school.

Purdue - don't feel like they had a huge contingent but almost got hit by that "train" bus thing while crossing a street so hate them.

Wisconsin - one guy just kept talking about how much better New Glarus and how we should carry it. A bit annoying and I get it, spotted cow is honestly pretty overrated. I do like Moon Man though. Also, I played a bit with Frank Kaminsky growing up and had known his dad from basketball camps for years so actually kind of liked that basketball team since U of I was so bad.

Ohio State - no real memorable experiences with their fanbase. Was pretty large but honestly mostly seemed like just football fans.

MSU - no real bad experiences, not a huge contingent but did bond a bit with a couple over a shared hate of Michigan.

Indiana - Actually kind of respected the ones that managed to travel for a football game but still a small group.

Didn't really notice a ton of traveling fans for Rutgers, Maryland, Northwestern, or Minnesota.

West coast teams obviously weren't part of the Big10 yet so real feelings yet but I did love Bill Walton so I'll have a soft spot for UCLA.
