Ty Rodgers to take redshirt year

Practice is mularkey to me. I'm pretty sure guys like Kipper Nichols also flashed in practice but in the games, it was a different story. I'm focusing on a larger sample size of in game action over a period of 2 yrs, not practice.

That Ole Miss game was a better indicator of where Hummer and Tre White stood than practicing against each other. Only time will tell if Hummer and Tre are better options. I'm not convinced at this time on November 5th.

I believe the inclusion of Will Riley was likely a turning point for Rodgers' role but you have to get a Will Riley. I believe coach just got too many guys who can play the same position that Ty can play and he appears to be the odd man out but not convinced that Tre White is a better option than Ty Rodgers. When you got too many people who want to shoot and too many chefs in the kitchen, that's when you run into trouble. We don't need 5 shooters on the floor. We need guys who know their role and play it effectively. See last year's team
I appreciate Ty but let's dont act as if he has lived up to expectations. Ty is not a lock down defender or an uber skilled player like a Rodman type in all areas besides shooting. I trust our coaches to evaluate the talent. I am not so easily convinced Ty is better than Tre White at any aspect until I see more on the court at Illinois. I know LaTulip says they are very similar in many areas except shooting the ball where Tre is better. I tend to agree with Latulip. Ty struggled on defense at times too. Ty was a very good offensive rebounder but I have not seen enough yet to say Tre or others can't be to and also provide a threat to score and spread the floor which Ty unfortunately just can't do.

I don't mean to pick on you, others have said the same sorta thing... but it doesn't make sense to me. This past offseason was the wettest example of "recruiting is fluid" in CBB history.

I doubt BU even ever thought, "My next recruit needs to be 'over' Ty Rodgers." He was probably thinking, "I'd better get a damn move on or I'm not gonna have a full roster!" (And of course he's gonna try to get the best dudes he can.)

We happen to have the good fortune of having an extremely competent coach, so it turned out he got a lot of good dudes!

Also, isn't it a bit early to say White won't be more valuable than Ty when it comes to winning ball games?
I don't disagree that this is the reality of college basketball/sports now and that in real life. Now that there is $ involved, it's fair to be treated like a pro player where you either perform or you're "out". I just also am thinking about this as a fan of college sports where investment into players was more than just year to year. In the NBA we now no longer expect players to stay loyal to a team but rather the almighty dollar/championship. I am just nostalgic for those players that have given their loyalty to Illinois and may not feel the same loyalty back. Again, NIL has changed this entire calculus, but I'm still not yet fully comfortable with it where we have a player like Ty having to make a decision like this. BU is a genius and I believe we will have a crazy successful team (so much so I have a bet with Vegas on the Illini to win the entire thing!) this year.

I could see Ty wanting to maximize his NIL, but is he really going to make a lot more money with the redshirt?

2 years of Illinois NIL
Vs.
1 year of Illinois NIL and two years at another program where he might not make as much?

I like Ty but his offensive game is so limited. He can’t shoot. He doesn’t pass particularly well. He doesn’t handle particularly well. Will other programs be beating down his door trying to get him signed?
My guess is he wants to make the NBA as most college players do. He also probably knows his shooting needs to be >>> much, much better to get there.
We can debate & will & have what the chances are of that happening (maybe very small vs 2 x very small, but probably higher in his eyes) - but with an extra year the chance of developing an NBA level shot get better, in the meantime, he collects an extra year of NIL, an extra year of education, an extra year of free room & board.

Will he leave after a year, probably...but I expect him to hang around for awhile/probably all year and see where things stand before he makes that decision, if he ends up finishing up for us it is likely that he has improved & fills a bigger need. If he doesn't, it opens up NIL for a replacement.

I'm all for Ty getting 5 years of NIL instead of 4. Hoping it is all with the Illini but not holding my breath.

I think this is the best outcome of an unfortunate situation TBH...

-If Ty is planning to stick around and work on his game, that's awesome, DGL sat his entire first year effectively and he's now looking like he's going to be a force.
-If Ty is planning to leave, I'm glad that he is able to get his NIL $$ and work on his game while helping the team/preparing for his next destination. I would feel bad if he found out he wasn't going to be playing as much going forward and he couldn't get his $$ if he redshirted. The University has money and I look at this as a moral cleanse where everyone can come out with something in a rough spot.

Is it possible he's getting paid (NIL) as a redshirt (or maybe even given more to stick around on the bench), and the "sell" is that he will make himself and the team better in practice, stay as a glue guy who knows the system better than anyone else on the team, improves his bargaining power for more NIL money or NBA bites with another year of eligibility, and maintains the possibility of coming back and gaining all the IL fan respect to stick with the team and/or cash out somewhere else the following year a la Coleman.

Where Harris I gave a zero percent chance of coming back to Illinois I think Ty has a five percent chance if TA isn’t coaching elsewhere. If TA is elsewhere he will go there I’m sure.

Driving to East Lansing in a Chevy Blazer bought with Illinois NIL money. All his replacements portal-ing out or being drafted. Tomi is retroactively disqualified due to accepting a hamburger during our recruitment of him.

We have a leader in the clubhouse.....

Edit: had you said "cottage cheese"......automatic trophy.

And then he gets drafted after next year and we decide to go back to building with home grown illinois high schoolers.

Transfers to Loyola Chicago, beats us in the first round in the tournament and is a first round draft pick after averaging 16, 9 and 5 hitting 40% from three

In interviews after the season he will say he finally had the opportunity to showcase his offensive game after being held back at Illinois and told not to shoot

Loyalty board goes ballistic losing to Ty in the first round and calls to fire Brad reign down

I unexpectedly (car trouble on the way to the football game) was in Champaign still on Monday. Bought a ticket, I assume from a season pass holder, second row directly across form the Illini bench. Was excited to see all these new players up close. Before the lineups were announced, I notice Ty in sweats. Since, I had been pre-occupied for a couple days, my first thought was he had a minor injury that I missed. My second thought was, too bad I was looking forward to seeing if he was willing to take shots and especially to see him at the FT line. Nothing during the game looked unusual to me. He was engaged with the team and coaches, and in particular I saw Tomi with his arm around him as they were discussing something during a timeout. When I got home yesterday I read this thread title and scanned it quickly. I am sure every point of view has been shared and I am probably repeating things that have been said and couple questions.

1. It makes sense for somebody like Ty to plan on a 5 year collegiate career, for the obvious financial reasons and adding more time to improve his skills.
2. Clearly there was a great connection and admiration between Ty-BU-UofI-Illini fans. When the team was introduced at the Illini-Purdue football game, Ty clearly received the best ovation. I said to my wife, "The fans know him, many don't know who all these other guys are".
3. After watching these guys the other night (I know it was EIU), with this mix of players, I don't know how he could get even 15 minutes. Even at that, I think Brad would have had to look for those minutes to give.
4. My gut tells me, Ty knew this and BU confirmed it for him.
5. If he made a good personal decision to be patient and get that extra year, then this is the year to do it. And I have to give him credit for his maturity. I don't know how many people that age could do that and sit out a year of playing with this team/teammates.
6.. With the current environment, nobody knows what the team makeup will look like next year. There may be more opportunity. I am not trying to be an eternal optimist, but what if WR and KJ decide to go pro, Tre decides he still hasn't found a home, and BH is gone? So here are my questions

Why wouldn't he wait as long as he can, like after the season, to make his decision? Most activity happens then anyhow. Unless of course he gets an incredibke NIL offer, but I just don't see that from teams that he would want to play for. But, is all this a moot point and he has already made the decision to leave?

Ty needs to stay. He's a glue guy who when (and I hope not), the Illini fall short of bringing in the revolving door of high paid NIL players. that being said, he wants to not just play, but start, and I wouldn't want him on the Illini if he didn't. All I can say is that I hope he sticks around.

My aunt took me to Wiebolts Dept. Store in Chicago on a Monday offday to see some of the Cubs including Lou Brock who I most wanted to meet. Only he wasn't there. That was the day he was traded to the Cardinals.
