Whether or not this season is a successful one, I'm so excited to watch the young core of Burleson, Donovan, Winn, Gorman, Walker (hopefully), etc for many years to come.

I really do like this young core. I’ve not been overly thrilled with Oli but maybe he’s doing more behind the scenes to right the ship. We’ll see if they can keep it up.

Paul Goldschmidt will be a FA at the end of the year. He turns 37 during the season. Do you think the Cardinals will offer him a new deal? With Burleson doing so well it is hard to imagine offering Goldy more than a 1 or 2 year deal with an annual salary that's no more than $15 million. His production is down all across the board. Often career lows.
I was also curious how he stacks up against current first basemen in the Hall. He seems to be just below what will be needed to make it. Therefore I think he will want to play somewhere for a couple of more years. Probably somewhere were that is a hitter's park with a team that doesn't mind overpaying an aged veteran.

JMHO .....................I think Burleson will be our 1st baseman net year and Goldie will leave for either the Astros or the Rangers as a DH for a 2-3 year contract to increase his numbers for HOF worthiness and return to his home state........The Cardinals can use that $$$$ saved for starting pitching , if the FO uses their heads correctly..........

Burleson has hit for average and power everywhere he has played in the minor leagues and is having his breakout year this season.....he lost 20 lbs during the off season without a decrease in power #'s and is such a good contact hitter.......

1st base..............Burleson
2nd base............Gorman
SS..........................Winn
3rd base..............Arenado

I'll be happy with that..........I really really will................

Lead off walks and walks in general just are not a recipe for winning baseball.................40 + pitches by Gibson with few strikes...............

THAT'S A WINNER !!!!!!!

Cardinals split the doubleheader with a win in the nightcap 4-1............

Liberatore with a great 6 innings only giving up 2 hits and no runs , striking out a career high 8 batters.........
Helsley with his 28th consecutive save and the usual drama that goes with it.......
Goldie and Donovan with 2 out RBI's in the bottom of the 8th.........big runs for my nerves , for sure.........
Burleson with another multi-hit game and 2 rbi's...............

I really think Arenado will be the biggest benefactor of the time off for the All Star break........throw the feet up Nado and relax.....

LET'S GO CARDINALS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God I hope not. He needs to go. Now I say that on June 26 with his OPS below 700. If he catches fire in the 2nd half and ends up with good numbers then I might entertain a 1+1 deal.

Think the best short and long-term is offering Goldy a 1-2 year contract extension max. His numbers are down but he will still produce over the roulette we have going on in the outfield.

Burleson hasn't played a full season or even a number of games at 1B yet. If the Cardinals can ever get healthy and consistent production from the outfield than I would be fine with Burleson seeing more time at 1B after this season. Lower risk would be keeping Goldy for another year or two and transitioning Burleson to 1B if the organization feels he can field the position full-time.

I guess ask me again in August on Goldy. 1B is a premium offensive position. You need a hitter. And Goldy has been that for his whole career. Until now. We are halfway through the season and he has been bad from day 1. If this keeps up no way you sign him again. Big money for unproductive aging veterans is how mid market teams go down the tubes.

Whenever I see a veteran struggling late in his career I think of Lou Brock. In he penultimate season he played only 92 games. 317 plate appearances and hit .221. Many were saying that he was 39 years old. The game had passed him by. He should retire. I remember listening to jack Buck tell us that Lou hit a line drive down the line and that it was foul by inches. Or his line drive was caught by a fielder that was in perfect position. Jack would then tell us yet again that baseball is "a game of inches".
The next year Lou came back and hit .304 with 123 hits giving him 3023 for his career and retired.
I am always willing to at least consider giving a guy who has had success his whole career one more chance. Then again there are those who are like Gibby and get rocked their final year.

No doubt. My preference would be to see Goldy get a 1 year extension or let him walk. He has earned my respect on either of those choices.

A Goldy hitting .230-.250 with 20 HRs is still more production than we are seeing from our platoon of outfielders over the last few seasons. Goldy has been an Ironman and think some don't realize how raw we are at 1B once he is gone. JMO but I would love to see Goldy back next season to transition Burleson or whoever else at 1B. Goldy is still productive, just not MVP numbers.

In 2023 Jordan Walker had 16 homeruns and 51 RBIs in 116 games. Lars Nootbar has never had 50 RBIs in a single season. I am not advocating that Walker should be the right fielder. It is just a comment about the lack of punch in the current major league outfield of the St. Louis Cardinals.
