Full disclosure, I was one of those that gave it hard side eye in the beginning.
Also full disclosure, the (what's left of the) football fan inside me absolutely loved watching Wisconsin football during his time there.

I've pined for it every year of the BB era so far, and I see glimpses of it with KF. I know the game has changed pretty dramatically since then, but I still love that style of game. Helmet on helmet, we are going to punish you for four quarters. 🧡
I was also skeptical. Mainly because I just didn't understand some of his career decisions. But, I certainly appreciate him now. I'm no insider, but I have a feeling we have to give some credit to Whitman, as well, for setting the direction.

I think Central Michigan is likely better than what they showed against FIU. 6 turnovers is brutal. Think they come out loose and we are due for a bit of a let down after an emotional win and gearing up for our first big road test of the year.

That said, from what I could see FIU receivers were able to get separation from the CMU DBs, so I think we will be able to throw the ball.

It’s a game in the second half but ultimately we pull away and win 34-24.

I saw someone post earlier that if we beat CMU this week and sneak into the top 25 (as a reminder, we are currently #26, first team receiving votes), it would be the first time we faced a ranked Nebraska team as a ranked Illini team in nearly 40 years. That got me wondering when (A) the last time we faced a Big Ten foe while we were ranked and (B) the last time we faced each Big Ten foe while we were both ranked. Excluding West Coast additions. Enjoy!

Last Time Illini Were Ranked
2022: Purdue 31, #21 Illinois 24 (Champaign, IL)
2022: Michigan State 23, #16 Illinois 15
2022: #17 Illinois 26, Nebraska (Lincoln, NE)
2022: #24 Illinois 26, Minnesota 14 (Champaign, IL)
2011: Ohio State 17, #16 Illinois 7 (Champaign, IL)
2011: #19 Illinois 41, Indiana 20 (Champaign, IL)
2011: #22 Illinois 38, Northwestern 35 (Champaign, IL)
2007: Iowa 10, #18 Illinois 6 (Iowa City, IA)
2001: #15 Illinois 33, Penn State 28 (Champaign, IL)
2001: #17 Michigan 45, #22 Illinois 20 (Ann Arbor, MI)
1990: #5 Illinois 21, Wisconsin 3 (Madison, WI)

Never: Maryland
Never: Rutgers

Last Time BOTH Teams Were Ranked
2001: #12 Illinois 34, #25 Ohio State 22 (Columbus, OH)
2001: #21 Illinois 38, #20 Purdue (West Lafayette, IN)
2001: #17 Michigan 45, #22 Illinois 20 (Ann Arbor, MI)
1991: #15 Iowa 24, #13 Illinois 21 (Iowa City, IA)
1990: #8 Illinois 15, #24 Michigan State 13 (Champaign, IL)
1985: #18 Nebraska 52, #20 Illinois 25 (Lincoln, NE)
1959: #8 Penn State 20, #13 Illinois 9 (Cleveland, OH)

1947: #6 Illinois 40, #13 Minnesota 13 (Champaign, IL)

Never: Northwestern
Never: Maryland
Never: Rutgers

That Wisconsin one for 1952 seems really hard to believe, lol. However, I guess they stopped being really bad right when we started...
your missing some 1983 games. schedule below shows opponents ranking, not sure when we became ranked that year, probably not for MSU, but surely after we beat IA, leaving OSU & Michigan that year...we were ranked #4 at end of season, prior to Rose Bowl disaster.

ugh - no reason we should give up more than 10-12 points to CMU

I’ll predict 37-10

so 1983 2 games with both teams ranked - OSU & Michigan - also seeing the opener in 1985 against USC (ok so not B1G at the time) as well as some noise in the numbers as MSU doesn't show ranked on this reference when they played us, but were 19 on the U of I reference.

The turnovers had a massive impact on the game, no denying that.

But—CMU averaged just 4 yards per play, while FIU averaged 6 yards per play.

For the game, CMU ended up with more total yardage, but because of the turnovers, FIU had short fields, and so they ran 33 less plays.

If you flip the number of plays per team, FIU would have had 504 yards to 224 for CMU.

If you split the plays down the middle, so equal amount of plays for team, we’ll say 65 each, CMU would have had 260 yards to 390 for FIU.

So if you remove the turnovers, FIU probably doesn’t win by 36, but they probably win by 2-3 TDs. And this is an FIU team that we would probably beat by 2-3 TDs.

The great equalizer in this game is the weather. But it looks like by kick off on Saturday, the rain will have dissipated.

I’m going:

IL: 34
CMU: 13

Cover the ~18 point spread.

Current forecast says slight chance of rain. I've been keeping a close eye and it's been getting better throughout the week.
According to weatherbug it’s 0 percent chance of “showers” until 11:00 when it become 25 percent, then 30 percent for for the rest of the game. And it will be warm, 80 to 82 degrees.

It’s good September weather. Could be a lot worse.

Updated Sellout Watch: we've eclipsed 49k. Next up 50k.

There was social media post earlier today from the recruiting coordinator's account that said the "recruiting section" was officially sold out. I was not aware of there being a "recruiting section" other than knowing recruits and their families generally get to sit in section 131. But I assumed it was 1) just a portion of the section and 2) the primary reason why that section often doesn't show tickets available for sale until the week of a game. Certainly that can't mean the entire section 131 is filled with recruits and their guests...that would be 1,220 people. I don't know what to take away from that tweet, so I'm not changing any assumptions other than knowing it will be another big recruiting weekend.

When did the recruits get bumped out of 106/107?

We have to avoid turnovers. Play conservative with minimal mistakes. If we do that, we get an easy win.
