NBA Draft

One consensus I have seen on various draft board discussions is that TSJ is more ball dominant than Knecht. TSJ needs the ball in his hands to be effective whereas Knecht does not. TSJ has much higher usage rate than Knecht. All of this is apparently a significant ding against TSJ and in favor of Knecht in modern NBA. In a weak draft like this year, most teams are looking for effective role players who can support their existing star/franchise pieces.
Per KenPom, Knecht had a higher usage rate than TSJ.

huh? last season Knecht had 32.7% vs Shannon's 29.2% usage rate. I can understand if NBA teams like Knecht vs Shannon, but using usage as an excuse just makes me wonder if they even watch the games.

Knecht is fantastic coming off screens, so that's true in the sense that he's a real off-ball weapon in the half court.

But TSJ is no slouch in that area either, albeit with a different skillset, and is so much better in so many other areas of the game.

I'll just leave this here in response to the notion of TSJ being a black hole:

TSJ 2.3 APG, 2.0 TO
Knecht 1.8 APG, 1.7 TO

The ESPN mock draft that was posted had TSJ going to the Knicks at 25.
Looks like it won't be the Knicks. Rumor has it that they traded that pick (and several others) for Mikal Bridges.

They are REALLY leaning into the whole Villanova thing.

Edit:

Never mind... It's their 2025,2027, 2029, & 2031 picks. Although this acquisition makes it much less likely they take TJ.

Wait...is the draft tonight and not tomorrow night??? Hasn't it always been on the Thursday, the last week in June? Or so it's been that way in the past. Maybe I'm reading this completely wrong?

First round tonight, second round tomorrow.

What's happening here is that journalists weren't getting any buzz on TSJ while his charges were pending because teams didn't know if he was draftable. They were scouting him but not firmly slotting him on their boards.

With the legal situation cleared up that has suddenly changed, and while the mock draft positioning for everyone else is a product of months of discussions with teams and how scouts and executives are looking at the board, these outlets have very little time to understand where TSJ's stock stands. But it seems obvious that he's got genuine interest all over the bottom half of the first round.

Yahoo's latest has him at 20 to Cleveland:

The final Athletic mock has the Bulls trading down to 17 to take him:

To toot my own horn, I think what I was saying months ago was true: TSJ was never a second round draft pick, that was just writers splitting the difference between his obvious first round grade and his total undraftability in the event of an unfavorable outcome in Kansas.

NBA announced in January that it would be two days to give Execs more time to consider their picks. First round tonight, second round tomorrow.

Would absolutely LOVE to see TSJ alongside Ayo. Although the Bulls organization right now is so putrid that I'd almost rather he go to a more experienced team like CLE, BOS, LAL, MN or even the hated Knicks.

But as a lifer fan, he would make the garbage Bulls team MUCH MORE pleasurable to watch next year. If anything, TSJ is experienced and ready to contribute NOW!! So hopefully CHI recognizes this, and doesn't try to settle on an unproven 19 YO.

My cynicism about the Bulls front office makes me less excited about this possibility than I probably should be.

A lot of his other apparent suitors are great teams with championship potential.
Yeah, this would kind of suck for him, if playing in the NBA for your hometown team is a thing that can suck.

I'm sure he actually did impress in a workout. I'm even more sure the Bulls are viewing this as another weird trick to keep ticket sales and interest up without doing anything to meaningfully compete.

100%, and to this point

It's taking a 24 year old rookie that's "settling". The Bulls need the most upside they can possibly get, and that's not TSJ who has some baked-in limitations at this point of his development curve, and also doesn't obviously fit a Bulls need.

He seems increasingly locked into the Jazz at 10, but under no circumstances should the Bulls let Nikola Topic fall past them. Dillingham doesn't fit the already lead guard heavy roster at all but he's got upside value as well.

It doesn't seem like the right locker room for Kel'el Ware, but I'd be impressed with that pick as well, that's someone who has difference-making potential.

It does seem like the Bulls are the floor for both Clingan and Cody Williams, but it doesn't look like either will fall that far.

good point. the bears keep signing local kids and ones who seem to have grown up as bears fans (kmet, tonyan last year, our own doug kramer among others) but there seems to be a method in their madness. not taking away from tsj, but i do see the cynicism there from the bulls.

i hope he goes to a winning org, too.

interesting. no worries about topić's injury?

Sure I'm worried, but the prognosis for ACL injuries in basketball is generally pretty good, and he'd be top 5 easy if he were healthy. That's a big opportunity in this crummy draft.

I'm very high on TSJ, but no way I'm taking him over Topic. There's no college senior in this draft I'm taking over Topic, nor Dillingham, nor Ware.

It's Knecht and Edey and Tristan Da Silva and so help me god Baylor Scheierman that you'd have to be nuts to take over TSJ.
