Minnesota 25, Illinois 17 Postgame

#176
1. Need the bye week
2. Hopefully it was the season's lemon game
3. Am a wee bit paranoid of a collapse now
The "lemon game" was Purdue. Only by sheer luck did the Illini win that game. Should have won it by 30 points, not 1 point in OT. In PU's 7 losses they didn't score more than 20 in any of them, but they put 49 on us. Had we lost the Purdue game we'd be 1-4 in our last 5. That's a trend. That was a lemon.

We already used up our lemon game. I'm not sure what today was. Injuries, I guess.

We are not up to where we need to be talent wise on both lines....goofers oline were all 6'6" and over 300 lbs on offense.....

We have the talent at QB1 ,WR's and RB ( yes we do miss KF)....

TE's were not used today except very early in the game....

If LA has the time in the pocket he can have a 70 % completion rate....but we lead the B$G in sacks allowed.....

Punting was not as good as usual...

Just a crappy type of game with no momentum generated....

Oh well , rest up and try to heal up and get ready to finish the season strong....

This school and students should be ashamed of themselves. This stadium was full except for the north stands (maybe 3/4 at best…maybe.) our school has sold out for the almighty dollar and home state kids have to get whats left. And the bathroom deboggle we had today, not letting people use certain port a pottys when the south bathrooms are flooded. Ludacris. Clown show.

This one really hurts because it was very winnable against a mid-tier B1G program. Simply can't win these games with 17 points.

P.S. Fleck is still a piece of turd and deserved to lose.
50% true (first part), 50% false (2nd part). We deserved to lose more than they deserved to win though. That 3rd down run call in the 4th quarter was as bad as it gets!

No but we are basically losing a majority of our dline rotation. If we are just bringing in developmental guys we will get destroyed

Would’ve loved to have this one. We are still on pace to finish better than any expert predicted and what some here thought.
We lack dudes. I like our guys, but we lack top line dudes. A little frustrating with the lack of use of McCray. I don’t think I’ve seen it in the Bielema/Lunney era, but have we run any split back? I’d love to have Valentine’s what looks like home run ability, but we have to find a way to disguise what we are doing when he is on the field. Can he catch a ball? Can we get him involved in the passing game.

This is the first Illini loss this year to a team we could and should have beaten. Penn St and Oregon are top 5 teams for a reason, they have too much talent for us to overcome, especially on the road. I trust BB and staff to work on fundamentals and address our glaring line issues on both sides of the ball during the bye week. We will finish the season with our easiest stretch, and need to avoid a November crash. Win 2 of the next 3, and we end with a solid 8-4 record going into a bowl game. I call that a win for the program this year.

Fleck himself deserved to lose by fake punting when his team had all the momentum. It was baffling stupid, and his team bailed him out. Never suggested Illinois deserved to win. Illini made too many mistakes when they have little margin of error to work with.

We are wearing down just like in '22. A reflection of our lack of depth. Hopefully, we can recover during the next 2 weeks are string 2-3 wins together. Gonna be a challenge.
The bye week is going to help though. If we win 2 more we will have the same record we did in 2022.

Two questions:

1. When will we have that game where our offense explodes on a Big Ten opponent?

2. I know football is constantly evolving but I really enjoyed the Juice/Nate read option offense. I believe we led the Big in rushing. Why doesn’t anyone do that anymore?

Because it’s hard to get a qb that will go all season without getting hurt. Not to mention most kids won’t want to play in that offense

That’s a call where you look like a dumb !!! if it doesn’t work but people think you’re a genius if it works. I’m sure we would be saying the same about BB if the fake punt didn’t work against Michigan.

I think we've seen the ceiling on Lunney. There are just too many wasted plays that are equivalent of "here, run it up the middle" for no gain. If we don't stay on schedule, it just kills our offense.

It seems like there is always 1-2 plays a drive that kill us and we are now 2nd and 9 or 3rd and 7. We have the best QB and WR talent we've had in a long time and we don't use it enough in my opinion.

We get so conservative in the red zone and settle for field goals. Open up the playbook and let them play.

That’s probably the reason why Altmeyer has lost so much confidence. Open up the playbook and let the kid throw it down the field. I think once they let him pass more and get in a rhythm he will start gaining his confidence back. Kid looks rattled in the post game interviews.

Look at his body language after the Michigan game vs the Minnesota game. You can just tell that he’s a bit rattled right now.
