Mike LaTulip transfers to Wright State

Per the plan announced last summer, LaTulip redshirted in 2015-2016 and will graduate next weekend. Now he can be a 5th-year transfer eligible immediately & hopefully get meaningful playing time at the new school.

How good is Wright State? What are the chances LaTulip plays in the NCAA tournament next year? Best of luck to him.

Despite the quite serious movement on this board two seasons ago to get MLT some more tick (of which I was a member), he was never going to get meaningful minutes at the University of Illinois. I'm sure the move is to get some more playtime, which I totally understand.

I wish him all the best, and will be following him with interest!

They finished third in the Horizon but are losing 4 of their top 6 scorers I believe. Anyway, best of luck to Mike. :alma-mater:

His new coach will be Scott Nagy. Pretty strong Illini connection.

Best of luck MLT. I hope to see him go for 30 against somebody in the tourney next year. Whether its Horizon League Tourney, the NCAA, or the NIT.

Mike did it the right way. Played and supported his home state school. Had a plan to get a degree (and did it) and now can pursue more playing time and additional schooling at another university. Good Luck to him.

That guy (MLT) could be the future head coach of the Illini! He just didn't have quite enough size to get enough playing time here. I hope he has enough size to be effective at Wright State. He certainly has a number of other tools and a fantastic attitude. He might be one of my favorite Illini.

Surely he will be. Kid's no slouch.

If wanted to pay to play basketball another year, he'd probably find some place closer to home. His parents travel to every game and while the Horizon isn't bad, there are closer options.

I question how much he will actually play but I'll be rooting for him. Looks like he spent the last year getting stronger which he needed to do in order to have more of an impact.

I, too, thought this was a curious option. Thought he could have started or been 6th man anywhere in the MVC. Would have been a great fit, is a great league.

Nailed it! He was very proud to be an Illini. He was the main guy for showing recruits around when they recruits came for visits. Teammates loved him, coaches loved him, recruits loved him, crowd loved him. Glad we had Mike in the program, wish him the best!

Best of luck to him. He was a great ambassador for our program and school. I look forward to him returning in some capacity some day. In the mean time I will be a wright st fan and root him on in his last season

That's good - that he finished his degree. I always thought it to be strange, at least from a student perspective, to finish up the senior year, and therefore the degree, at another university. (I lost track of what academic year LaTulip was in.) I suppose he'll be earning the one-year master degree at Wright State? Basically going the route of Ekey and McLaurin, using up that last year eligibility.
