In what way lol? Very different games from what I’ve seen. Riley shoots it a ton, Barnes is much more of a get to the rim, point forward type.Scottie Barnes

I want to preface this by saying I like Brad and I'm excited about the talent on the upcoming roster and I'm excited about the potential of adding an extremely talented wing in Riley.
However, I've seen Riley ranked nowhere near the consensus top player of 25(Dybantsa is the top ranked 25). Riley is a legitimate 5 star in 25 but for the 25 class is 21 on 247, 15 on 247 comp, 10 on ON3, 16 on Rivals, and 24 on ESPN.
Also, he if he comes to Illinois he's reclassing which means he would likely drop to the 30s range for 24.
Obviously, very talented and people here seem to like him but it's not a guarantee that a 5 star reclass makes an impact as a freshman or even outplays 2 talented 3rd year wings in Ty and Tre.
For example, Kylan Boswell was a top 15 recruit that reclassed and played 15 minutes as a freshman behind Kerr Krissa and Courtney Ramsey. Jarin Stevenson was a 5 star recruit that reclassed and played 15 minutes for Alabama last year. Also, Khristian Lander was a 5 star reclass to Indiana and was terrible.

That's a good post. I would add that I have one concern about Riley, and that is strength. He's very skinny and very young. The big ten is full of rugged defenders. Will Riley be able to excel through contact? That was TSJ's forte.I want to preface this by saying I like Brad and I'm excited about the talent on the upcoming roster and I'm excited about the potential of adding an extremely talented wing in Riley.

Oh man, I remember all these guys and most of them lived up to their rankings at Illinois.Back in the day, landing top 25 recruits was celebrated but not that infrequent.... Going into the wayback machine:
Doug Mills (Parade AA Top 10 1958), Skip Thoren (Parade AA top 20 in 1961), Rich Jones (Parade AA top 10 1964), Nick Weatherspoon (Parade AA top 20 1969), Bill Morris (Parade AA top 20 1970), Audie Matthews (Parade AA top 10 1974), Derek Holcomb (Parade AA top 20 1976), Eddie Johnson (Parade AA top 20 1977), Derek Harper (Parade AA top 10 1980), Efrem Winters (HS top 10 1982) (McD AA MVP), Bruce Douglas (HS top 20 1982) (McD AA), Lowell Hamilton (Parade AA top 10 1985) (McD AA), NIck Anderson (Hoop Scoop #8, Parade AA top 20 1986) (McD AA), Marcus Liberty (Parade AA top 10 1987) (McD AA), Deon Thomas (Parade AA top 10) (McD AA), Richard Keene (Parade AA top 20 1992, Hoop Scoop 13) (McD AA), Kiwane Garris (Parade AA top 30 1993), Bryant Notre (Parade AA top 10 1994), Ryan Blackwell (Parade AA top 10 1995), Marcus Griffin (Parade AA top 20 1997, McD AA), Frank Williams 1998 (21, McD AA), Brian Cook 1999 (McD AA).

This is a good oneMichael Porter Jr maybe
Why does he have highlights of being on the john?Watched some Riley highlights while on the John this morning (TMI) and this kid is a professional at tough shots. His offensive package kind of reminds me of Carmelo Anthony

Thanks for sharing this list. It's a great memory boosting device for us older, early onset guys. I got on this train at Nick Weatherspoooooon (and the lesser known Nick, Conner). Audie Matthews, was the player that changed the trajectory of the basketball program, IMO. Opening up the I-57 pipeline. It has been a few years since I made that RT from Champaign to the Miracle Mile. Is it still drab and desolate? I would look forward to catching a glimpse of the C-U "skyline" just after I passed Rantoul.Back in the day, landing top 25 recruits was celebrated but not that infrequent.... This comparison was mentioned on a previous page. As someone who saw MPJ in high school a couple times, this definitely is a good comparison.Michael Porter Jr maybe
I watched Marcus play in H.S. Riley is much more offensively-skilled at the same stage. Liberty was a better run-jump athlete. Liberty was a SF who could play any front line position. Riley is a SF that could play SG.This comparison was mentioned on a previous page. As someone who saw MPJ in high school a couple times, this definitely is a good comparison.
Judging from just the YouTube high lites alone, WR looks to have even more of an array of offensive skills and range from 3. There's literally not 1 thing that I can see that is not to like about this kid's game.
Now that I think some more about it, if I had to compare him to a former Illini, I think Marcus Liberty is a really good comparison. Similar height, skills, athleticism.
I don't care if it leads to a crowded front court on this team. I would take another "Marcus Liberty" in a heartbeat!!
He has to be able to punish the defense when they slack off of him. He’s playing defense on himself when he refuses to look at the basket. He has no touch around the rim when he actually attacks the rim unless it is uncontestedDoes anyone else think TY is our current version of Damonte ? He might be our MVP of the year due to his behind the scene intensity he exhibits in practice on the defensive side . Lead by example . He won’t need to score a point if he can get the rest of the team to try to match his level of intensity on defense
George Gervin ha ha ha the Iceman cometh, dude got of bed in the morning hot, hitting jumpers, floater and crazy bank shots. But damn did he a hamburger or two...I watched Marcus play in H.S. Durant, Porter, and (for the old folks) George Gervin are better comparisons for Riley's style of play.
