I'm not a CBB general manager,to me this has the ingredients of a championship contending team. One of BU talents is roster construction ,with my rose colored glasses on I see this teams ceiling being very high.
IMO The year for natty aspirations is the one after next if we can retain the majority of this team for 2 seasons.

Top 3 B1G finish and Top 5 NCAA seed I think should be realistic goals for this year, especially with so many new pieces!

I really don't give a rats a** what Torvik or others think or think they know. I am content in believing this season's Illini version has ability to contend for a Big Ten (18) crown and make another deep run in NCAA tourney. There is nothing that would make me believe any differently. Looking forward to start of the season.

I remember a team that started out 39-0 that had 2 legit PGs
OK you remember that team, too LOL

From 1-9 I would agree with you. But last year's team was better at the top. There's no one close to TSJ or maybe even Domask and Hawkins.
This is 100% completely how i feel. I think we will have a deeper, more well rounded team but I don't see anyone that screams alpha dog.

Illini fans like myself are extra grateful for KJ’s commitment today to put a bandaid on the pain from the golf team

I certainly won't argue with TSJ. But I think an argument can at least be made that Tre White's production last year was "close" to Hawkins', and Humrichous' production was "close" to Domask's. (And I know the roles are somewhat different, especially with White and Hawkins, but I'm looking only at production here)

First: Hawkins on top, Tre White on bottom (sorry they don't line up with the headers perfectly):
GPGSMINFGFG%3PT3P%FTFT%ORDRREBASTBLKSTLPFTOPTS
353531.64.1-9.145.11.7-4.636.92.2-2.779.21.44.76.12.71.11.52.61.612.1
292631.24.4-9.845.60.8-2.729.92.6-3.575.21.44.55.91.30.40.82.31.812.3

-note that Tre White actually had a slightly better fg% than Coleman, despite the reputation for inefficiency (He was of course notably worse from 3, though). He got to the line more, too.
This is why FG% is a pretty meaningless statistic.

White had 0.7 more recorded attempts, plus about 0.4 more that led to free throws without a recorded attempt. Altogether, he scored about 1.08pts/shot, while Hawkins scored 1.16. That's a pretty big difference. For those who don't have an aversion to TS%, you could just look at that directly (it's calculated as pts/shot divided by 2, so in this case 0.539 vs 0.580).

The discrepancy increases if you account for possessions ended with a turnover (which are worse than a missed shot, but I don't know the value of that off the top of my head). And even more if you account for assists, steals, and blocks.

Nothing against him, though. He might improve (in ability and/or better usage) or be a valuable role player even if not, but he hasn't yet produced at the level of our top players from last year.

With TSJ out, the one thing that showed more was TY being more of a key hub in offense and posts. Domask obviously stepped up as did Coleman. Guerrier also stepped up, but he was really inconsistent. This group should have more spacing if they can live up to hype. Our defense I have concerns with in our starting lineup, but the floor spacing and ball movement with more scoring options will be there, but it really depends on Hum, Boswell, Kasparas, Ivisic all living up to offensive hypes. If it does, we are going to be hard to stop. We have not TSJ out there to push transition.
Not worrying about offense with this team but replacing TJ’s and Hawks defense is very difficult. There is the advantage of having a true 5 but don’t believe it will replace Hawks flexibility. Tre hasn’t shown defensive ability but believe he has athleticism to be the star stopper if right attitude. See KJ as more of a Tyler Kolek but would dream of a Havlicik.

This video looks like it was thrown together in 3 minutes and it probably was. It is clear they have done no research on KJ but wanted to put something up for the Illini clicks. KJ has more than held his own in head to heads vs Egor.
Exactly. 👍

-Carter acting like he’s merely a wing??
-Greg saying he’s a good not great passer?
(When anyone who has eyes or can count knows that’s clearly false. Yes. It’s subjective but…geez.)

That’s all I needed to know.

I continue to be impressed with how Brad solves problems. Every off-season it feels like there are a lot of question marks that would doom a lesser coach and more often than not, we come out looking better on the other end.

In 2021, we lose not one, but two assistants and have Kofi in the portal. Brad brings in TA and Chester and gets Kofi to come back. In 2022, we need to fill a Kofi-sized production hole and find a point guard. Brad brings in TSJ and MM and out of nowhere gets Skyy Clark. Yeah, admittedly, the season didn't quite work out, but it was a heck of a swing and, importantly, got us TSJ. In 2023, Brad got both TSJ, who nobody thought would play another game in college, and Hawk to come back and loaded up the squad with a ton of experience utilizing the extra covid year. This off-season, he rebuilds the squad with a ton of young and intriguing talent, replaces an assistant with one of the best in the game, and manages to fill two massive holes in the roster with European guys not on most teams' radar.

I was a huge worrier in the 2021 off-season. I didn't know if we'd be able to handle the adversity. This off-season, I knew Brad and the staff would figure it out. They always seem to.

That's exactly what they said.

Is the more balanced attack by design? It is nice to have that 1 guy you know is going to show out, but there were games that shut down TSJ and Domask at the same time and we struggled. Brad can give this coming year a Chef's kiss if he can get all these new pieces to play cohesively. While I cant say I am a fan of having to learn new players every year with the xfer portal, Brad and CO are making this exciting. I'm ready for the sleepers to eat crow with being down on ILL and so high on Braeden Smith.
