I just hope if we get him, he does not turn out to be a Egor bomb.

I think most of the 04-05 team follows Self to Kansas if they didn’t have to sit out a year. Remember when Bruce wore the all black suit during one 03-04 game to represent Bill Self’s death with the team. It was a big deal to those guys and took awhile for them to buy in.

We can play hypotheticals all we want with NIL had it come to fruition 20 years ago, but I find this argument particularly infuriatingly nonsensical, because if it were true, then:

1. Why did Dee ever stay when Self left, when Self actively tried recruiting him over to Kansas with him, where he clearly had economic incentive to do so? (and according to many sources at the time he was never on the fence about it or even remotely considered it unlike Deron)

And

2. Wasn't Self basically already playing this game back then and why we had several high end recruits interested? And why we lost those high end recruits when Self left. Had Self had access to NIL at Illinois 20 years ago, would he really have had no shot getting Dee?

I mean this Dee would have never come here or stayed an Illini seems like an incredible strawman argument to me, especially since he had a significant opportunity to no longer play here for more money at Kansas. And it also assumes Self wouldn't have had NIL but other schools would have when recruiting Dee. I just don't get this take.

Dee's an Illini for life because he proved it. It's really that simple.
A few distinctions:

1: Then, he would have to had to sit out a year in exchange for transferring. Today, he would not have.

2: Because paying players was “illegal”, that kept the number of bidders low which kept the overall dollar figures low and not as life changing. If Dee could have legally secured a $1-2m bag without having to sit a year to transfer, you gotta assume he does it.

So what's the status on Demni?

His handlers tried to bluff a 2 mil NIL bid and Illinois walked away?

There still a decent chance he plays in college next year, or is he most likely staying in Madrid?

I think all this trying to guess what players 20 years ago would have done with the current environment ignores one glaring thing that has nothing to do with the current state of college basketball .... AAU.

AAU (and prep schools) have created a no loyalty, only worry about yourself player that there wasn't nearly the same level as years ago. Now, more than ever before, these players will skip around from place to place because they have no loyalty to where they are at. Look at guys like Storr and Skyy Clark. Different school every year of high school?? Now take those kids, and their families/de facto agents/and other hanger-ons and put them in the current state of college basketball. What do you get...chaos.

So I'm sure back in the day you would have seen some players doing the same thing, I don't believe it would be nearly the level that it is now. The mentality of the players has changed. The team is simply no longer important to many of them. (Hopefully some of them, but not sure honestly)

Charlie V had verbally commited to Illinois. Switched to KS when Self moved.
I got by BSEE and MSEE from Illinois. I never transferred somewhere else. I am Illini for life.
JMO --If you leave for another University and are still alive then you are no longer Illini for life.

Indy, are you hearing conflicting reports, as far as Egor goes ? I know earlier today, 0440 mentioned this. So, I was curious, if you had anything to add or say where you think we are with him?

We aren't that crazy.

All we want is for players to give a blood oath to the university and swear an allegiance to never suit up for a different program. No matter the circumstances!
Also, as a by-law: should they have a talented child then they too need to commit to our progran in a timely manner. (That part should go without saying). --Unless their son is ranked in the 200s like Gill cause well....gross.

Should they underperform, we reserve the right to cut ties quick cause they were "never one of us" anyways.

The guys on Sleepers Media mentioned an interesting player in the portal. One they said had been contacted by Illinois (and maybe 25 other schools). He's a 6'8" 197 lbs freshman guard from San Diego named Kevin Patton Jr. He averaged 9.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.4 assists last season as a freshman in 26.1 minutes per game. Patton shot 43.3% from the field, including 33.8% on 3s, and 71.8% from the line. Patton also had 77 assists vs. 71 turnovers in 2023-2024. Sounds (and looks) like he has a lot of potential, plus 3 years of eligibility remaining. I think that Patton could develop into a very good player at Illinois, but he's certainly not the immediate alpha/wing that many fans are clamoring for.

He did say in his interview with Goodman that he asked TSJ what NIL he got, because he was promised that he was going to be paid a similar amount. It sounded like that didn't actually happen. I'm not saying he felt slighted, but definitely not a good thing if true.

I just read that 6'7" forward Ansley Almonor of Fairleigh Dickinson is visiting Kentucky. Almonor averaged 16.4/5.1/1.7 last season for FDU, with shooting splits of 43.6/39.4/80.0 in 32.0 mpg. I'm not sure if Illinois has contacted Almonor?

There's another similar(?) player that many of us are hoping will transfer to Illinois. That other 6'7" forward averaged 15.6/6.0/2.8 last season, shooting 45.7/34.4/79.5 in 28.2 mpg. He is Jamir Watkins of Florida State. I'm confident that Watkins is the better player, with more potential. But I expect there's a good chance that Watkins will stay in the Draft. I wonder if Illinois has checked in on Almonor? But moneybags/blueblood Kentucky would be tough to beat out.

One of the more egregious lies that a few of the sycophants told IRT the portal is that AJ Storr's mother derailed the deal with Illinois. (attacking family members has become a go-to move).

Storr and his agent negotiated for the best deal. Period. Kansas was always a top choice. They slow-played him some and let it play out, but eventually came up with the money.
