Is Illinois in the lead for martin, mc-cantos and johnson (visiting this weekend)? Or just wait for juco’s and transfers to use the rest of the scholarships?

The Rolder recruitment is why you build and nourish relationships in your home state. This would be a missed opportunity:

(1) Rolder camped with Illinois in June and the staff passed on making an offer
(2) Father played at Illinois (Scott Kehoe)
(3) Committed to Illinois for baseball and has an advantage if they can offer him a chance to play both
(4) At a HS that has been Illinois football friendly in the past. Good location for a late bloomer

That's a lot of advantages. Gotta hit on those chances. We've talked on here about how there were going to be situations like this because of COVID that uncovered solid in-state players that would have truncated recruiting cycles because programs didn't know of them or passed on them when they were younger.

After Bret's comments, I reviewed our last few recruiting classes. It shows how hard it is to predict college football success from high school evaluations. These are our top 5 recruits over the last few recruiting classes. I did not do 2021 because we know nothing about them yet.

I am using 247 ratings for our top 5 recruits:

2020
James Frenchie - no longer on team
Reggie Love - backup, but could more PT down the road
Tre’von Riggins - no longer on team
Cooper Davis - no longer on team
Deuce Spann - switched positions

2019
Marquez Beason - Will he ever recover?
Isaiah Williams - Switched positions - Starter
Shammond Cooper - Will he ever plan?
Moses Okpala - Switched positions - may start down the road
Keith Randolph - Starter

2018
Calvin Avery - part of rotation
Verdis Brown - switched positions. Will he ever start
Reuben Inije - left team
Coran Taylor - Switched positions. Probably won't see the field
Khalan Tolson - Starter

I think number 3 is the biggest sell. They will push that hard.

Kind of fascinating that we passed on offering him when he camped with us in June. I wonder what the staff didn’t see.

Didn't realize he was Scott Kehoe's son - he was a year behind me in school - heck of an O-Lineman

Considering no one saw it, it's tough to blame him. He could have been in baseball shape so didn't look impressive, I think Werner said he mainly played baseball all summer on one of his podcasts. He didn't exactly talk like we were going to land him but at minimum were going to be involved

Noticing a lot of Wisconsin players entering the transfer portal. Wondering if Bielema or Henry will raid their old school to get some of these guys. The Kayden Lyles guy looks like a hog molly in the trenches who could be a one year gap piece in the O Line as Miller and Bielema recruit and develop their own Olinemen

I looked into it and seems like a pass to me. Lyles played 4 games as a freshman on the D-line and hasn't seen the field since moving to the O-line. The receiver who's in the portal looks like he's only played special teams. The three others are freshmen who were dismissed from the team, or suspended and decided to transfer, for disciplinary reasons. Maybe those guys could be worth a shot, but they're all running backs and we're kind of good at that position.

I'm sure Bielema is hoping for better than players who couldn't see the field for one of our conference opponents. We're not going to beat Wisconsin with their rejects.

I just saw an article by Rivals Transfer Portal about Lyles and it said should be plenty of interest in him. Article said he was the starting center in 2020 before going down with season ending knee injury (didn’t mention during what game). This year he was mainly backup with one start against Michigan. He has also played guard. Rivals gave him a 7.2 out of 10 on impact meter, which equates to high impact player that while not a program changer will be a very good contributor and starter (6.1 to 9.0). Article lists a bunch of teams that will likely show interest (Illinois among them). His dad played at Wisconsin in mid-1990s. Obviously, BB wasn’t there yet, but did see an article that mentions the kid visiting Wisconsin when he was in 4th grade and talking to BB and meeting some players.
