Until Zook's last couple years we historically ranged between 20 and 40 nationally, so this seems to be a pretty reasonable objective. This would typically put us in the top half of the Big 10, which is also pretty realistic I think.

Possibly? Bielema has run PRO Style offenses in Wisconsin and Arkansas so possibility. Petersen also runs a run-heavy offense with play action and many pro style play calls.
Hopefully we don't turn our backs to keeping a up-tempo offense that mixes different offensive concepts to keep opposing defenses on edge. We have a talented RB room and pretty above average QB room with Peters and Williams leading way. In 2-3 years, hopefully we can keep same with Spann and Leary.
I think we will learn more as the time goes on, but I think we are going to get a zone running spread scheme similar to the Zoom-era teams.

ESL has a ton of young studs. McVay is effectively a 5*. Ahmad Robinson is a heckuva DB prospect. Patterson is another great, young OL. Hopefully, the Hawthorne addition will help us to ultimately get back in good graces, but perhaps the staff knows they won't have much traction there in the immediate term

An East Saint Louis recruit can not enroll at Illinois until after March 19, 2023, two years after Hawthorne was hired. Thus, we can still recruit the Class of 2023 players as long as they are not early enrollees. This really only prevents us from recruiting Class of 2022 East Saint Louis players. We can still recruit McVay and Patterson.
I wouldn't mind seeing offers go out to those young ESL Flyers
If Hawthorne gets moved to one of the 10 assistant spots before that date, does that recruiting ban end immediately? Or is it locked in until that end date because he was originally hired in a different role?

Should have had him take a job at some random Southern Illinois HS for a week and then hire him. Have Hawthorne's new HS contract include a five-figure buyout so we can compensate for their "participation". Win-win-win.

I said it before, and it is repetitious... but the NCAA allows a coach to leave a program and take players with them... and we cannot let a walk on enroll at U of I because we hired the football coach From his high school.

The main reason for the rule is so you can't just make up a job to give someone just to get their player(s). That's why it only applies to non-coaching roles. There's a lot I don't get though. So they can hypothetically go all out with normal recruiting for a sophomore at ESL, but can't even talk to a Junior or Senior? Seems so weird.
What if the player has dreamed of going to Illinois? (I’m sure this isn’t the case)
But, let’s say player X has always dreamed of playing for the Illini, and the Illini happen to hire one of his football coaches to a non assistant position...so now that kids dream is squashed?
I can see us not being able to actively recruit...but if a recruit wants to come to the school regardless of the coach being hired, he should be allowed to.

Imagine trying to police that? The NCAA is full of absurdities but this rule seems pretty good to me.
