Illinois 50, Purdue 49 OT Postgame

Big picture, more times than not we are on the right side of these games anymore. It’s all a part of climbing out of the gutter to be a respectable program. Terrible game today, but massively right direction for the program to be where we are.

If we go 1-1 the next two weeks I would be over the moon.

Let us also spare a thought for how astonishingly bad the announcing was.

There was tons of stuff, but three things spring to mind

1. Ryan Walters was calling offensive plays for Purdue, and yet Jason Simmons was one of their primary narratives of the game, just a straight up factual error.
2. Announcers always lamely hype up hot seat coaches, but it's very obnoxious for both sets of fans. A bad habit.
3. Eric Collins has been around a long time and is naturally high energy, but in the last couple of years he's transitioned to a go-insane-on-every-play style that is just flatly unprofessional and someone needs to tell him to stop.

The way things are going... the Illini Footballers might need Ayo and Kofi to come back to play some D for them.

Yes, one hell-of-a recovery and comeback to remember. BUT... never should have put themselves into that position.

A win is a win is a win. Even when sometimes it feels like it isn’t.
This one is just a number on the left side of the column, nothing more

Its a tough spot to be playing against a new coordinator and a new QB, especially when the change comes late in the season. They looked like they were prepared to face a running QB but the adjustments also never happened. There was no contain and they let him get out and cause havoc too often. The second half was falling for misdirection. More long plays than they've given up all season long.

Still the feeling in the Stadium after PU took the lead was complete disbelief. The Purdue fans were celebrating like it was their right to take the lead back. For Illinois to come back and win the game is HUGE!

A win is a win …

We’ve got a lot to clean up …

We’ve got some guys who we’re gonna really have to try and get healthy quick …

Altmyer … Keep doing your thing kid …

Josh McCray … One tough dude … Love seeing that guy do well …

Oh yeah … Ryan Walters … Since I know you’ll be reading this later … We standing on business over here … So you can take all that nonsense and all the talking and all the pretending you don’t know what you did today back with you to Purdue along with that fat L … You’re a bum in my book …

Agreed. we got hit with a replacement no film quarterback and our d-line is average. end of story. Aaron is having a great year. People are fickle. Geez
The team we almost lost to has scored a total of 16 points in two games COMBINED and had scored 1 total touchdown in those games. We just gave up 43 points to objectively (look at the stats) one of the worst teams in college football. Their BACKUP QB (who is a freshman) threw 18/26 for 3 TD's and 0 INT's with a QB rating of 203. It was one of the worst halves of defensive football I've seen (and this is as an Illini fan). The defense was a complete train wreck and Henry didn't make any adjustments. There is nothing fickle about saying that is unacceptable.

I’m surprised that there have been no comments about Bretts comments towards the end of his presser. Everything about Purdue pisses him off. He thinks we do things the right way by implication it seems he thinks they don’t.

There’s a LOT more that upset him than what he stated publicly …

I won’t get into super detail other than it’s a lot more personal than just two guys talking smack at a press conference and on twitter … Walters crossed the line …

I don't really feel that. for fans, this close loss was awful. but losing to MSU and Purdue two years ago felt awful as well and we came back.
Those were major missed opportunities, but that team had already accomplished a major big-picture step forward, it was already our best season since Zook.

(And honestly, our next 11 games after going to 7-1 in 2022 were garbage, arguably our next 17. The omens of MSU and Purdue were as bad as they looked)

I think even a loss here would still be followed up by a two or three good wins and a bowl and still positive momentum
I get to make a free hot take here because there's no way to prove it: we do not make a bowl game if we lose that game.

As it is that's a really, really worrying performance. We will go 5-7 if that's our team going forward. 10-2 is possible if the Nebraska performance (where we were, like, unrecognizably better in the trenches, especially defensively) is who we are going forward.

Who's the real us? We were in retrospect really bad against Kansas. The score flattered us against CMU and PSU. Hard to know.

Exactly right. But people are doing the "fire aaron henry" bit which is fickle. We are building something here. We need continuity, Familly, and not to overreact to a terrible, awful half of defensive football like a bunch of ninnies.

Maybe after the emotion wears off I'll be less pissed off, but this is the worst I've ever felt after a win. That defense stirred up all of my PTSD as an Illinois football fan.

Coming in to the game the defense was giving up 14.2 ppg. College Football is completely wacky sometimes so it's absolutely nuts to immediately jumping to fire the coordinator based on one game.
