Some of this "analysis" seems to be a modern version of Alice in Wonderland without the charm.

SP+’s updated numbers have us ranked the same overall as we were before the game with our defense slightly improving and our offense slightly regressing.

Looks like we’re on track to have a solid defense this year, but maybe not as good of an offense as we would have hoped:

SP+:

49 overall
84 offense
29 defense
45 special teams

They may or may not be, but going into South Bend and winning is an offley strong statement.
Yea winning @ no. 5 ND is def. more impressive than beating Kansas at home.

But if the two teams were to square off right now, considering them being the mid-major team who finshed middle of conference last year...we might win convincingly...at least have to capability to. And Marshall wasn't ranked after winning in South Bend last year. And we're coming off a pretty darn good win as well - maybe not @ no. 5 - but pretty good win.

Nevertheless, we'll have a shot next week as well and are right on the precipice of being ranked for the second time in three years...which is more than enough to be proud of.

I do hope you are correct .
I like him & think he’s a good player & team mate . I’m just so jaded watching recent Bears quarterbacks ( Trubiskey & Fields) struggle with reads that i’m nervous Luke has this issue also .

I can recall certain Illini gunslingers in the past get under center & seemingly be able to see 3-4 guys within 2 seconds

I think ALionEye made the point that before this season Luke only had 10 starts under his belt. Now 12. That's a season basically.

I think he's gonna have a monster season stats-wise in 2024.
yeah, he clearly needs to improve but im confused by the rancor.

he has +70% completion, 4td/0int, 8.3 y/a including a game against a top secondary with a lot of experience

he did what was asked of him yesterday, and his downfield throws were generally spot on. I think if there's any blame it lies at Lunney's feet for not dialing up more downfield action

I'm shocked Patterson and Crisler rated out as highly as they did. Patterson I thought was solid within 5yds of the line of scrimmage, but anything past that, he struggled with coverage. Only thing I can think of as to why he rated 3rd highest on defense was Kansas' seemingly odd fixation on screen passes which played to his strengths. Personally I thought Cox had a better game in coverage.

As for Crisler, I don't know. He did do well in pass blocking, the whole line did to be honest. But his run blocking looked fairly questionable to me. Kreutz, Gesky, and Crisler were all having issues getting any movement whatsoever on running downs.

Honestly, the pass protection Luke is getting thus far is a beautiful sight to behold, especially considering last year at this time, he was getting less than a second to throw with a defender going untouched into the backfield on almost every single down. If we can keep Luke this clean game in and game out and Lunney starts getting more aggressive with his passing plays he's going to have a heck of a season.

During camp, Xavier Scott took the reps at CB. These two weeks he's played the nickel. He was a nickel last year. He is a nickel.

So I guess this is the secondary based on how things stand currently:

CB: Cox and Patterson
Nickel: Xavier Scott
FS: Miles Scott
SS: Bailey

No Terrence Brooks...14 snaps through 2 games...didn't play a single snap this past game...

I guess you can't argue with the results to say the least so... 🤷‍♂️

Game changers that were not the players themselves:
1. Brett’s pregame discussion with refs to warn for illegal screens
2. Ref’s kahunas to admit errant p.i. call and pull up the flag
3. Crowd noise
4. Strategy to play it safe (contrary to KU circus offense and 4 turnovers)
5. Aaron Henry defense adjustment
6. Decision to insert freshman running back because he had the best ability to hit the hole quickly
7. Just plain good luck for once
