Illinois 23, Kansas 17 Postgame

I think the fact we only had 2 penalties is one of the biggest overlooked facts of the game .

let’s hope that’s indicative of the season
No kidding. How many good plays and drives were negated in previous seasons b/c of bonehead penalties?

And in defense of Luke, one of the listed strengths of KU's team is their experienced DBs. He threw into some really tight windows all night.

I want to see this as a positive, but I’m really questioning the overall capabilities of this particular crew. Normally, two penalties on each team might indicate a clean game, but there were multiple holds, on both sides, that simply weren’t called. The most obvious of which was this one:

Add on top that there were several questionable spots of the ball… one of which, fortunately, was overturned on replay. There were two to three more that could’ve been challenged.

Connelly’s post game win expectancy came in at 42.3% for us.

For those unfamiliar, post game win expectancy tells you if that game were to be played again with the same stats 100x, how many times would you win?

The calculation includes things like yards per play for both teams, number of turnovers generated vs number of turnovers expected, etc.

The basis of the stat is to tell you how you played in the game and if what you did that in game is repeatable moving forward.

So last night, we were slightly outplayed. I imagine Kansas picked up more yards per play than we did and we might have had some turnover “luck” (which basically just means we forced more turnovers than we should have given the number of times we got our hands on the ball).

I’m still happy with that though.

For context, Arkansas’ post game win expectancy vs Oklahoma St. was 13.8%. They got thoroughly outplayed, yet still won.

Here’s Connelly’s full list of games from week 1:

This one frustrated me, as we were sitting right there. Is there some minimum amount of jersey stretch that must be exceeded? Defender clenched Franklin’s jersey with his left hand while pulling his right forearm back with the other, all while making no effort whatsoever to play for the ball or even glance toward it.

I agree, with everything said here. I think officiating crews make a difference on penalty calls. 1 particular BIg Ten Crew I know will ring us up. I was not that impressed with that crew last night. Lots of holds by Kansas not called also

Meanwhile down at the Phog, they're still in full meltdown mode.

This post in particular feels really familiar ... both programs have been through remarkably similar pathways over the past couple decades. Makes me kinda sad for them (until I read the next post in the thread going ballistic about how KU lost to a terrible Illinois team).
Yeah, I don’t feel bad for them at all. One idiot said they’ve been waiting 15 years and it’s all gone now, as if it’s their birthright. They must think it’s basketball. Their petulance and entitlement has clearly dripped over to football.

I did try to warn them on a previous post… lol.

It's a blatant hold obvious in this shot, but maybe the ref had a bad angle and thought Franklin was pushing off at the same time? Only thing I can think of besides just a really bad blown call. Should have thrown a flag and reviewed it at least, IMO.

OTOH without the holding, maybe the pass ends up short and goes incomplete or intercepted?

even more frustrating to hear the TV commentators (who overall i thought did a good job) act like it was offensive PI from Zahkari
