So was Kenny Battle. So was Nick Anderson. That he was only there for 2 years
I’d pay top dollar to watch those 2 teams play against each other. Kofi would go for a million, Ayo would meet his match & have a war with TSJ, Domask booty ball gives DMFW & Grandison fits, Harmon gets taught a lesson from Trent & Curbelo, ‘24 Coleman schools younger Coleman. I think it would boil down to Kofi struggling on D against the ‘24 pro style offense. But wait! Ayo hits a game tying 3 to send it to over time. Coin flip from there.Just in general I place more weight on a full season of data over the randomness of one-off tournament games. If our Big Ten opponents were overrated does that mean we were too?
Would this even be a discussion if we hadn't had a disastrous 40 minutes against a team that had no business being an 8 seed?
I suspect this will be a long-running argument among Illini fans (the undercard for 89 vs 05), and I'm grateful for it, because 2024 needed to break our second weekend drought to even make it a discussion. But I'm Team 2021.
It's a fair point, but then imagine the sea of orange Loyola would have been dealing with.
I tend to agree. The 2021 team had more games where they absolutely dominated, but they had more games where they really struggled as well. The 2023-24 team had only 5 games all year where they shot under 40%. The 2021-2 team had 9. (4 of those were in the last 5 games. The Grandison injury really hurt our spacing & Curbelo's magic was gone by this point.)I'm not convinced myself. I think their ceiling (i.e., the crazy run from whooping #2 Michigan on the road without Ayo to winning the BTT) was some of the best basketball I have ever seen (including 2005...), so if that is what we mean it is very difficult for me to disagree. However, I think this year's team was more versatile in some ways and had less of an Achilles Heel(s) problem. JMO. I guess what I am saying is that I think it's fair to say 2021 "was better" in this sense, but I also think our 2024 team stands a much better chance of getting past Loyola on their off day.
Certainly would be fun to watch. Contrast in styles, for sure.I’d pay top dollar to watch those 2 teams play against each other. He didn’t say it was a good reason (or maybe he did I didn’t listen to it).So was Kenny Battle. So was Nick Anderson.

We've reached the "everyone is incredibly improved, the newcomers are All-Americans, and Fletch turned them into Greek gods" stage of the summer.
Illinois will be a very good team, though. No over the top hype needed.
He was very respectful to say putting in the years at Illinois is the only reason.I know he is the hot topic, but what was the tone of not wanting TSJ's jersey up in the rafters?
It shows how people weigh a team’s performance/quality by the ncaa tournament2021 record against KenPom top 15: 7-3
2024 record against KenPom top 15: 1-5
That seems like a hint of jealousy to me and that is very unfortunate if im reading it correctly. What if he was 1 and done and did what he did this season. I love Coleman, but I think he is bothered that he didn't choose Illinois from the jump? So what, that is what this system is now. Coleman is about to take advantage of the college basketball landscape the same way TJ did. That he was only there for 2 years
I know this is old news, but Grandison's lack of availability was a major problem against Loyola, just as Trent's lack of availability of one of his eyes was a big reason we lost to Houston the following year.I agree that the 2024 team was more versatile. I also think this year’s team would have probably got past Loyola…( stretching their D & sheer scoring punch etc.)
Loyola was well coached and better than advertised. Yet, we had two all-Americans; it’s a damn shame the 2021 team couldn’t adjust on either end….
UConn is super-well coached and is a juggernaut…they would have probably found a way against either team. I do think Kofi would have neutralized them inside of course. I feel like if 2021 really pushed the tempo…and Kofi and Ayo both had games they might have done it.
At the same time…I don’t see the 2021 team completely laying an egg against Penn State on a rec. league court. Nor, do I see them peeing down their leg like ‘24 did against MSU ball pressure late.
Fun exercise. But who the hell knows?
He also said TJ was favorite player to play with last season and they roomed together on every road trip. Don’t see a whole lot of bad blood there.
He also did mention hoping to have his jersey up there sometime. I imagine if he answered with the established criteria in mind it may have been a different answer. Seemed to approach it from a more subjective point of view. No problem with that approach but the best way I could contextualize the response.I know he is the hot topic, but what was the tone of not wanting TSJ's jersey up in the rafters?
And I believe TennesseeSo Duke, Alabama, Arkansas (possibly), bragging rights on a Sunday, ans B10 schedule for next year?
We should be primed for a deep run, or whooped like a pup
This sure beats the doom and gloom / brad sucks / we're not going to get any players stageWe've reached the "everyone is incredibly improved, the newcomers are All-Americans, and Fletch turned them into Greek gods" stage of the summer.
Illinois will be a very good team, though. No over the top hype needed.
And no PG!I really prefer this stage of summer to the previous 'Brad can't recruit, we are NIL poor, gonna finish 17th in B1G' stage though.
Our non-con schedule....
