Guess that's what happens when you sell beer at Illini games. :ROFLMAO:šŸ»
Can't imagine, given the attendance figures to Illini football games the last few years, that the fans could drink $60 million worth of beer and anyone walked away alive. (difference between Illini and Bucks losses).

More importantly, however, kudos to Whitman and crew, and anyone who came up with ideas that enabled such a spectacular fiscal performance. Michigan, of course, should be pummeled with rotten tomatoes and the ilk as usual. One can only wonder how long Michigan's blindly loyal fans will unload their wallets and pay for the blind arrogance of their athletic dept. over the past 100 years.

One also wonders what they are teaching in the accounting dept. and business admin. dept. at both OSU and Cheatigan?

Uh, excuse me but that is The OSU. With that kind of $$ being thrown around, they deserve the The.

BTW, do they even have a School of Business?
Very late to the party here, but can't resist noting that not only does tOSU have a business school, it's located literally right across the street, caddy-corner from Ohio Stadium. šŸ˜†

I was there in October and drove around its athletic campus. It's substantial and they have built a lot of new facilities in the past decade. For example, they have a brand new facility dedicated solely to wrestling. I imagine that their annual interest expense and depreciation is substantial relative to ours currently, and those fixed costs are inflexible.

One great benefit of having Josh as AD is that he's an extremely intelligent guy and grounded in quantitative management. Undergrad degree in finance and Bronze Tablet (so, basically, a perfect grade point average at the U of I.) He strikes me as a savvy business manager based on his background working for Ron Guenther as an assistant, as an attorney in DC, and as AD at Wisc-La Crosse & Wash U.

[EDIT: I just looked him up. He also graduated summa cum laude from Illinois' College of Law. Bright boy.]

Captain Obvious comment of the evening: we're extremely lucky to have him. Best Illinois AD hire of my lifetime, I'd wager.

Johnny Davis got taken down a notch relative to Kofi (although DMW gets the credit for that). Too bad it was not on ESPN. Let's hope TJD is next, and that will be on ESPN.

I would be just fine with that prediction coming true...as long as the Illini win the last match up
I really can't see Edey getting away with playing the way he does in the tournament. Luckily for them they have plenty of other pieces to get pretty deep with Ivey and Williams.

This has always been an issue with B1G officiating, sometimes they let teams play and get away with fouls, then they hit the tourney and get into foul trouble when the games are called more tightly.

Hopefully it doesn't impact us, but we all know it will.

I've heard this stated a few times. Are we talking about the elbows when in the low post? When he defends, I didn't see many fouls, just overarching arms.

I agree. Non Big 10 refs will call fouls on him for using his elbows the way he does on offense.

This is true. He also runs into the issue that Trent did while we were shorthanded where he's having to take tough shots due to lack of other options.
Yeah I was just reading about this yesterday in that little rabbit hole I went down. The article linked below talks about a ā€œskill curveā€ and suggests that you should compare players with ā€œlikeā€ā€™usage numbers. Below is the excerpt and link.

  • In a later chapter of Basketball on Paper, Oliver emphasized that Offensive Ratings shouldn't be viewed in a vacuum. Introducing a concept he called "Skill Curves", he acknowledged that a player's ORtg needed to be judged in conjunction with his Usage Rate, a measure of how big a role the player fills in his team's offense. The bigger the role, the more difficult it is to maintain a high ORtg; the smaller the role, the easier it is to be highly efficient. Because of this, Oliver stressed that a player's ORtg should primarily be compared to those of other players in a similar role.

When it comes to advanced stats, I've always used Torvik and Kenpom. But I just found a new site that has some interesting stuff, evanmiya.com.

One thing that caught my eye is that we have the best 5 man lineup in the country...Kofi, Grandison, Monte, Plummer, Frazier. That takes into account offensive and defensive efficiency.

Shooters have been open less and less. People are picking their poison and locking down the three point line for us. Theoretically, Kofi should be able to get more takes but it hasnā€™t felt that way. Not sure if they arenā€™t getting it to him or heā€™s not finishing (or both). In those two games he was out, we really missed the inside-outside game. Hopefully we can get more of the pop-outs to Plummer/Frazier/Grandison in February.
It sounds like IU plans to swarm the paint, so hopefully he is able to kick out for some long range šŸ’£ to open the post as the game goes tomorrow.
